The answer is private equity

Yep. Grow the practice, sell to big vet, start new practice 10 miles away, rinse and repeat.

I have a buddy who works for a PE firm that has been rolling up small vet practices for 2 or 3 years. Looking for the big payday in the next year or so.

Meanwhile, those of us looking for a locally owned practice with vets that actually care about their community and the pets in it are just about shit out of luck, but congrats on sucking out all of the money

Yeah, we were completely disgusted with how difficult it seems to be to find a vet that can see our dog within a day or two. Thought we found a good one until the first issue came up and they couldn't fit her in for two fucking weeks, and they acted like I was some kind of entitled asshole when I expressed my frustration with their timeline.

Went to the emergency vet, figured out she had leptospirosis and was in kidney failure, hospitalized for a few days, and now she's good as new. She would have died if we listened to the original vet.

Switched vets, obviously, but I harbor a serious grudge against Companion Animal Hospital and other similar outfits. Fuck your buddy in the goatass, @orange dream

Got a question - not pet related. About the business.

I've dealt with vets associated with Vetcor, Thrive, and VCA (actually owned by Mars) and have been generally pleased. The first two were local vet practices that mostly retain their local character. VCA is the big vet hospital company in Dallas, and more or less where you go to see a specialist.

You can sense a sort of "corporate ness," but the vets themselves are good.

It's not the same shitty PE experience that comes with "service" companies, HVAC, plumbing, electrical.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of the model, just commenting in case OP had questions.

Regarding VCA, I agree they have somehow maintained a high standard of care from the vets that still feels like visiting your old small town vet. We have used a VCA practice in North Dallas for about 15 years and couldn't be happier with them. We even have a good friend's daughter who finished vet school at OK State last year and is now one of their vets.
