He's a Lou Groza Semifinalist! Hook em!

(Please don't look at his actual stats)

No texas high school kickers can make FGs anymore? We have to go to the portal every year?

Honestly why wouldn’t you go to the portal for specialist every year?

The hit rate on kickers is about 7%. I'd rather pay a guy who has proven he is competent.

A 75% FG kicker doesn’t seem great, but what do I know.

This is true regarding that stat, which is absolutely wild to think about as someone who started watching football in the '80s.

We signed a kicker in the last class.

Good from long, good from short, the middle distance is an adventure

All of this kid's misses are wide left hooks from the left hash or center.

Just have to put him on the right hash as much as possible, and let that draw do all the work.

One good year, one mediocre year, one bad year. Truly horrific from 40 to 49, which is exactly why we got rid of Bert. I just don't fucking understand this take at all. If Bert made one more kick from 50, Bert would be better than this guy from almost every distance measure. I suspect we'll be shopping grad transfers and full qualifier JUCO's after one training camp. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but why we prioritized this guy is beyond me.

It's been explained, but I guess I'll try one more time.

Every single one of his misses in that 40-49 range is to the same side. So IF (yes a big if) our coaches think they see a technique flaw in his film they can fix then it's a great get.

Not sure the relevance Auburn has since we're not comparing him to Auburn for next year's roster.

Ship scared the fuck out of me with his right hooks but we usually set him up appropriately. Should be an adventure

He's been in college for at least 3 FUCKING YEARS. 3 years to fix his shit and he hasn't done it. Why take a project when you're gunning for a national championship? You're banking everything on the assumption that he's fixable despite never haven worked with him. There are kickers who aren't currently broken. Recruit the best one to the portal.

The comparison to Bert is because he is the reason we had to go get Shipley this past season. We were all happy when Bert left. Now we're bringing in a guy who is statistically worse than Bert. It's relevant because it's confusing, enraging and reeks of laziness.

Not sure what sports universe you reside in but here in this one things happen like sudden improvement by players in professional leagues once a coach or staff notices something. This isn't unusual at all.

Might not happen here of course, but speaking of laziness, who are your suggested kicker takes instead of Spetic?

The Ole Miss kicker has eligibility. Make them pay big to keep him. Make him the highest paid kicker in the country. Make him say no. From 74.2% with a known flaw to 88.5% with clutch in big moments.

Oh okay, that's your analysis.

While we're at it, let's just get angry when Texas doesn't have every single 2025 All-American on the 2026 roster.

You didn't ask for analysis. I gave you my kicker choice. Kicking isn't super nuanced. The raw stats most often correlate to quality unless there were serious problems with the blocking or the holder. I believe only one of his misses was blocked. Every kicker can have an off year. This guy only has one good year, and it was just above average, not great. His good year was not this past season either. He's trending in the wrong direction. Do we really think the Memphis coaches never noticed his miss pattern either? Do we think they also didn't try to fix it? No, it was the geniuses on Surly who uncovered the mystery. That must be it.

Can Banks or some other coach fix this kicker? Sure. It's possible. But after 3 years at the collegiate level, I think we're fighting long odds. He's a senior. He likely is what he is at this point. Fixing muscle memory and ingrained brain function for something he's probably been doing for a decade is going to be hard in a few months. Even professional athletes struggle with this. When the pressure is the highest is when his old mechanics are most likely to rear their head again.

I was just pointing out that all your negatives are based on your wishcasting that Texas can just tamper any player in the country into the portal. What my post presupposes is what if they can't?

I concede we can't just get literally anybody, but it's also place kicker we're talking about. How many teams are really going to put semi-serious NIL dollars to keep a place kicker? We're not talking about QB money here. It probably wouldn't cost a lot to poach one of the country's best.

That is concerning. I'm getting Sideshow Bert vibes about this guy. It was so nice to have a reliable kicker this past season.
