About to order my new Camp Chef. I was going to get the Woodwind Pro, but have landed on the XL vertical. I like the smaller footprint and larger capacity. It uses the same firebox device to add smoke like the WWP. Prices much lower too. The only downside compared with the WWP is that temp maxes at 350, so it’s not versatile. I have other cookers for too meet those needs so it just made too much sense to get the XL.

8 x 10lb pork butts on the recteq for a church pulled pork luncheon tomorrow. Having to do 4 at a time since Ive only got the 590. First batch turned out excellent, overnight cook and the 2nd is approaching the stall.

As I pulled in to take the 1st batch to put in the industrial sized fridges in the church kitchen I spotted my grandmother’s memorial stained glass window in the sanctuary and smiled to myself.

And wondered if she was looking in from heaven thinking “we raised our brood well” or if she grabbed my grandfather and said “look, Howard, our grandson is a complete dumbass!”

Probably the latter. I should probably make a deal with the building committee - I’ll continue to cook a few times a year, but they have to buy a huge Yoder, or I smell a deductible donation coming my way.

Anyone have issues with varmits getting in smokers or grills?

I live on the outskirts of town in Pinon-Juniper woodland.  Nice, except that it's been a battle keeping mice and wood rats at bay.  I've had to fortify my traeger at least 3 different times, I'm not very smart I suppose.

First, a wood rat got in through the chimney and made himself a nice home for a couple months.

Next, it was mice coming in through drip port and little air(?) hole on opposite side.  This family of mice made exquisite nests mostly by collecting my Great Pyrenees' hair and using that.

Last, they got down into fan blower box and nested in there.  Discovered those guys when I heard the fan going clunk, clunk, clunk on a mouses head after turning it on!  Had to dispose of about 8-10 that time.

I used hardwire cloth to solve the issue:

Was surprised (not really)they figured out how to access blower area down the side of pellet storage.

Thankfully, through it all I've managed to keep smoker going even after some wire repair in blower box.

To whit, some 3-2-1 from this weekend:
