LONDON, March 19 (Reuters) - Russia said on Saturday it had used hypersonic Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles to destroy a large weapons depot in Ukraine's western Ivano-Frankivsk region. Russia's Interfax news agency said it was the first time Russia had deployed the hypersonic Kinzhal system since it sent its troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

I wonder how many of those they actually have

Russia pulling out the hypersonic weapons is insanely telling. Real world data on those things in actual combat scenarios is probably the most valuable military intel on the planet, right now.

If they are willing to risk letting the West get a look at them in combat, then that means that they are extremely desperate - generals are definitely under extreme pressure to give Putin some kind of results.

Also means that either they are running really low on their regular cruise missiles, or Ukraine really is shooting down their regular cruise missiles.

Lots of Russian super weapons fall somewhere between “vapor ware” and “disappointing” on the spectrum, inclusive.

My favorite remains the MiG-25, which we believed was this Eastern Bloc super fighter capable of taking on anything in the skies.  We built an actual super fighter, the F-15, in response.  It turned out to be this hellacious hand welded rat rod of an interceptor, designed solely to shoot down bombers with gravity bombs that were really no longer the most important pillar of the nuclear triad.  A literal missile that you could sit on and kind of turn a little bit,

I love the MiG-25, to be clear.

Yeah, like I said earlier, one of my favorite aircraft as a kid in the 80s, but a piece of shit with an engine life of 150 hours, and if pilots really opened them up, they would have to pull the engines after a single flight.

Designed to intercept the XB-70, which was canceled.  Still went into production 3 years after the XB-70 was canceled.  Emblematic of Soviet design - can do one task really well, but not a good well-rounded system, and Mach 3 was useless in combat/dogfighting, especially as air-to-air missiles rapidly started hitting Mach 4+.

Nice little video

Or it could be a one and done use of the hype weapon in Ukraine.  Meant to send the message of, "You can't stop it and it can reach all of Europe."

Giving the West a look at it is an intelligence windfall.  More likely a problem of air superiority - Russia can't push its jets deep into Ukraine, and remember, the Brits and US are funneling longer-range air defense systems to Ukraine.

I know, but just make it a bit harder. Wonder if the Russians still have their track laying trains they used in WW2.

Ukraine has a different gauge that doesn't work with Russia.  They were blowing these bridges so that the Russians couldn't use captured Ukrainian trains.

Saw this earlier. Need to hit it again. Bridge is one thing, now fuck up the tracks. Wonder if they would like some portable plasma cutters? Also good for cutting up dead armor.

I've been wondering what happens if you just take all the rail spikes out over a 200 meter span?

Ukraine uses broad gauge, the same as in Russia, Belarus, Finland, and (for a few more years) in the Baltics.  Standard gauge used in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden, and further west.

That bridge could be repaired in 8 hours if Russia knows what it is doing.  Rails would be fine for temporary use, just under a speed slow order.

You're right, was thinking they had switched already.

Nope. Was all laid out by the Soviets.

Ukraine -– unlike Western Europe -– uses the same gauge of railroad as Russia. That infrastructure, though, can’t be used to bring supplies until troops control the towns that sit on them, in particular key junctions such as Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv in the north, or Kherson, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia in the south.

The fact they're having to pull them out in Ukraine is crazy.  This is a proxy war and our proxy is doing WAY better than anyone expected.

Javelin versus a locomotive.  That's something the Russians couldn't just repair/replace

Why not both? And they have plenty of locomotives, but personnel is where I think we can really do some damage. Was on an email chain with dad and a few of his SF buddies. They all are amazed by the lack of specialists and said the Russian Army has not learned shit on equipment maintenance or support since Afghanistan. Grozny was easy, since it was 1 target.

Few of these dudes spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe in SF doing nothing but thinking about how to fuck up the Russians. I have an old Pellet gun. Made in West Germany stamped on the barrel. Some of the teams would use these to ping Soviet guards on the wall. Would not hurt them with their great coats, but fun target practice.

does that help develop an intercept missile ?

Meh...hypersonic is an overused term by journos...

Every single ICBM is hypersonic pretty much after boost phase...we have ABMs to handle those and have had them since the 60s.  The PAC-3 was downselected in 1993 and went into service not long after that.  It can take down "hypersonic" missiles easily.  I left that world mid-90s so I know the badass tech we had then is probably dwarfed by what we have now.

Holy fuck.

so, help me...where's the line in all this?

Illegal invasion?  No.

Murdering civilians as they escape?  No.

Bombing pregnant women and babies?  Apparently not.

Now relocating Ukranian people to "camps"?

Is the general public of the European countries and U.S. not pulling the govt hard enough?

It's mainly about them flying hypersonic at a lower altitude than an ICBM.

Well, I don't think the journos actually know shit about them and they yada yada yada like they think they do.  Hypersonic just means they fly at a velocity of at least Mach 5...but it sure SOUNDS scary.

Yeah, hypersonic NON-ballistic missiles exist...and we've had those also since the 70s.  I worked on one in the mid 90s that was designed for anti-tank purposes.

If you think the damage from the Javelins looks bad, I give you the "hypersonic" LOSAT:

Okay. Bye

Damn shame as he would have liked to have seen Montana.  If it's any solace to his family, I'm eating a Big Montana sandwich from Arby's right now and going to send dic pics to his whole family celebrating his death.  And reminding them of the sandwich looking a lot like his widow's vagina which is now eligible for mourning-morning gangbangs from fellow Russian officers.

I'd really like to see our country go on the propaganda offensive among the Russian public.  As you can see, I have a few initial thoughts.  Phase two basically just involves me reminding them that Germany is re-weaponizing and the motto of Berlin lately is "Third time's a charm."
