At ACL this year, my wife and I ended up befriending and hanging out with a couple about our age.  They were French, but lived right on the border in Luxembourg and both worked in Luxembourg.  She was super cute, and she and my wife were very much vibing together, and talking about what to do after the music shut down, and where they were staying.  And, I mean, cute little blonde french gal with a great accent.  Come on.

Was there a chance to go back to the hotel with a cute French/Luxembourgish couple and set up a story that I would only tell people in person, never post in writing?  I choose to believe that there was, we were all just too tired to make it happen when everything wrapped up.  That's what I'm going with, because that narrative makes me happy.  Don't take that away from me.

Should the war in Ukraine result in a Russian loss, what will the future hold for Russia?

Well, we know the road ahead for the Russians is going to be a rough one, but that doesn't mean the country will collapse from within immediately. The military and internal security services hold too much power, and since the heavily propagandized, aging, ethnic Russians account for 70% of the population, an internal uprising isn't of concern.

The real threat to Russia comes from the outside. Neighboring countries or those with an interest in seeing Russia remain destabilized could take advantage of its weaker borders and limited economic and strategic capacity.

I wanna see China make a run at Siberia, only for the lulz. Do it for minerals or oil or wolf pelts.  Don't care.  Just do it.

While I get the sentiment, I don’t want to see China gain experience at war in any meaningful way.

Thomas Massie files some good legislation, like the Epstein stuff.

And then he files legislation to pull us out of NATO:

Quote

NATO is a Cold War relic. The United States should withdraw from NATO and use that money to defend our country, not socialist countries. Today, I introduced HR 6508 to end our NATO membership.” “NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed over thirty years ago. Since then, U.S. participation has cost taxpayers trillions of dollars and continues to risk U.S. involvement in foreign wars. Our Constitution did not authorize permanent foreign entanglements, something our Founding Fathers explicitly warned us against.”

“America should not be the world’s security blanket—especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense,” Massie added.

Fucking idiot doesn't realize that a huge part of why we have these alliances, and why we maintain such a large military is not because somebody is going to invade us from overseas - two oceans and nukes on subs, missiles, and aircraft, are a fairly good deterrent.

We do it because we want to project power around the globe, because we want markets around the world open to American companies, and we want access to resources in those foreign markets, whether they be oil or metals or whatever.  And if we don't, then we leave a vacuum that China will gladly fill, and that's not good for our economy. It's why England did it for years, why Spain and France did it.

BBC; Russian general killed by car bomb in Moscow, officials say

A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee said Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated.

He is the third military official to have been killed in bomb attacks in the Russian capital over the last year.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, the committee said.

It added one theory being investigated was that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. Ukraine has not commented.

Sarvarov died in hospital as a result of his injuries, the committee said, adding it had opened an investigation into murder and illegal trafficking of explosives.

Investigators have been sent to the scene, in a car park near an apartment block in the south of Moscow.

Images from the area show a badly damaged white Kia Sorento with the doors blown out, surrounded by other vehicles.

According to Russian media, Sarvarov previously took part in combat operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and also led operations in Syria between 2015-2016.

Investigators could be seen working at the scene on Monday morning

Vladimir Putin was informed of Sarvarov's death immediately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a number of military officials and high-profile individuals have been targeted in the Russian capital.

Darya Dugina, the 29-year-old daughter of a prominent nationalist figure and Putin close ally, was killed in a suspected car bombing in 2022.

Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack last April, while Gen Igor Kirillov died in December 2024 when a device hidden in a scooter was detonated remotely.

A Ukrainian source later told the BBC that Kirillov was killed by Ukraine's security service, though this was never confirmed on the record. As a matter of policy, Ukraine never officially admits or claims responsibility for targeted attacks.

AP; Car bomb kills Russian general in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) — A car bomb killed a Russian general on Monday, the third such killing of a senior military officer in just over a year. Investigators said Ukraine may be behind the attack.

Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from his injuries, said Svetlana Petrenko, the spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, the nation’s top criminal investigation agency. He was 56.

“Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of inquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said.

Since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine nearly four years ago, Russian authorities have blamed Kyiv for several assassinations of military officers and public figures in Russia. Ukraine has claimed responsibility for some of them. It has not yet commented on Monday’s death.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the world it must apply more pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war after he said Moscow's forces had launched a "massive" overnight attack into Tuesday with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, causing at least three deaths, including a little girl.

"This Russian strike sends an extremely clear signal about Russia’s priorities. A strike ahead of Christmas, when people want simply to be with their families, at home, in safety," Zelensky said in a post on Telegram, originally in Ukrainian.

"A strike carried out virtually in the midst of negotiations aimed at ending this war. Putin cannot accept the need to stop killing. And this means the world is not applying enough pressure on Russia. Action is needed now. Russia must be forced toward peace and guaranteed security."

A woman died in the Kyiv region and another person in Khmelnytskyi. A four-year-old girl died in Zhytomyr when a residential building was struck by a drone.

Zelensky said the strike hit energy and civilian infrastructure. He had earlier proposed a Christmas truce on energy strikes to shield civilians on either side from blackouts and unheated homes during the bitter winter months, which Russia rejected.

The Kremlin has repeatedly ruled out temporary ceasefires, saying Ukraine would use a pause to regroup and rearm while it is losing on the battlefield. Instead, Russia says it wants a peace agreement that ends the fighting to be comprehensive and permanent.

During the latest Russian attack on Ukraine, neighboring NATO ally Poland scrambled fighter jets. Poland also put ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems on "the highest state of readiness" to protect NATO territory, Warsaw's military said. Earlier in the year, Poland shot down what it said were Russian drones violating its airspace.

We've got two major developments in Eurasia. We're talking about Ukraine disabling two ships in the Caspian Sea and Poland getting EU approval to build a nuclear power plant.

Since the Caspian is landlocked, it's difficult for Russia to reinforce. So, Ukraine could disrupt Russia-bound Iranian weapons flows with limited strikes. With two ships already disabled, the Caspian could be a success story for Ukraine.

Let's jump over to Poland. With approval for a nuclear power plant, they will now have access to fissile material. Which means nuclear weapons could be developed at the drop of a hat (and even shared with some close friends).

As the security landscape in Europe changes, we'll likely see the emergence of multiple new nuclear-capable countries in the coming years.

More info about how clever Ukraine is.

Security Service of Ukraine hit Russian Il-38N before targeting submarine in Novorossiysk Ukraine’s Security Service of Ukraine has revealed new details of a special operation in Novorossiysk.

Before striking the submarine, SBU operatives disabled Russia’s only operational Black Sea–based anti-submarine patrol aircraft — the Ilyushin Il‑38N (“Sea Dragon”) — at Yeysk airbase.

The Il-38N was actively hunting Ukrainian naval drones and was the sole aircraft capable of detecting the Sub Sea Babyunderwater drone.

The aircraft was hit by an SBU combat drone detonated directly above its radar and equipment section, damaging critical systems and an engine.

Rubio was scheduled to attend peace talks with Ukrainian officials in Switzerland, but Witkoff had set off early in what some officials saw as a bid to beat him to the punch, according to two U.S. officials and a person familiar with the episode. Witkoff did not communicate his travel plans to Rubio and other State Department officials, the three sources said, in what they perceived as a move to allow Witkoff to negotiate with Ukraine in a way he saw fit.

Rubio ultimately made it to Geneva, ensuring that Witkoff would not be meeting the Ukrainian officials without him, according to the three sources.

Quote

It was not the first time U.S. officials had seen Witkoff’s actions as an attempt to make an end-run around Rubio. The episode, which has not been previously reported, was the latest example of a long-running rift between the two senior figures in the Trump administration with sharply different views about how to end the war in Ukraine and how much the U.S. should trust Russia’s promises.

Will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere. Russia likely won't budge.

Zelensky has outlined all 20 points of Ukraine’s peace plan👇

▪️ Recognition and confirmation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

▪️ Signing of a non-aggression treaty between Russia and Ukraine, with international monitoring of the line of contact.

▪️ Provision of security guarantees for Ukraine.

▪️ The size of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in peacetime to be up to 800,000 personnel.

▪️ The United States, NATO, and European countries to provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to Article 5. In the event of a new Russian invasion, a military response would follow and sanctions would be reinstated.

▪️ Russia to legally закрепить a course of non-aggression toward Ukraine and Europe.

▪️ Ukraine to obtain EU membership within an agreed timeframe, preferably with a fixed date.

▪️ Formation of a global development package to be formalized through a separate investment agreement.

▪️ Creation of several reconstruction funds to attract around $800 billion.

▪️ Acceleration of the signing of a free trade agreement between Ukraine and the United States.

▪️ Confirmation of Ukraine’s non-nuclear status.

▪️ Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: no compromises. The US proposes a trilateral management format with a lead manager from the United States. Ukraine’s position is joint management with the US on a parity basis (50/50).

▪️ Introduction of educational programs in schools aimed at promoting tolerance, intercultural understanding, and combating racism and bias.

▪️ The territorial issue is the most difficult point. One possible scenario:
Russia withdraws troops from the Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. In Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, the principle of “remaining on current positions” applies. Russia demands Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donetsk region, while the US proposes a compromise in the form of a free economic zone. If the “stand where we stand” principle is not accepted, the free economic zone option would be possible only through a referendum, with the entire package of agreements put to a vote.

▪️ Russia and Ukraine commit not to revise the agreed arrangements through the use of force.

▪️ Russia does not obstruct Ukraine’s use of the Dnipro River and the Black Sea for commercial purposes. The Kinburn Spit is to be demilitarized.

▪️ A prisoner exchange under an “all for all” formula, the return of civilians, children, and political prisoners.

▪️ Ukraine to hold elections as soon as possible after the agreement is signed.

▪️ The document is legally binding, with implementation overseen by a Peace Council chaired by Trump.

▪️ After all parties agree, a full ceasefire comes into effect immediately
