Brennan's has great brunch if it's open.  It's probably my favorite breakfast spot in New Orleans.  I couldn't find out for sure if they are open a few weeks ago when I was making reservations.  Settled for Atchafalya instead.  Ruby Slipper is also very solid and they have a few different locations.  It's not fancy, just has good breakfast.

Atchafalaya brunch has been our favorite meal each of our last 2 trips.  It's awesome.  We'll be there again a week from tomorrow.

What about tourney game watching spots next weekend?  I've been to Mannings during CFB and didn't stay long.  I'm sure a different scene during COVID but it was too crowded and bartenders sucked.  1 drink and we were out.  Ended up watching a game at Chart Room but don't think any kind of multi-tv setup.  Thoughts on MRB?  Pretty sure I've had a drink in patio there and remember TV's.  Decent TV setup at that Side Car spot that was posted on the prior page?

Sidecar is actually part of the Rusty Nail, the Bama bar and the best game watching spot in the WHD. My other favorite spots for game watching are Finn McCool’s, Bayou Beer Garden (day drinking in general), Tracy’s, Cooter Brown’s and Fat Harry’s. Also the breweries on Tchoup should have outdoor viewing (maybe not Urban South).

Thanks.  Sidecar looks interesting.  I'll be with my wife so outdoor (preferred assuming decent weather) with a decent cocktail menu or semi decent champagne (probably a must) will be required for her to be cool with spending our first trip in 16+ months watching games for any material length of time (i.e., Irish Pubs likely out).  Also may be walking around the quarter so I'm sure we will end up just popping in here and there.

Got it, would think Sidecar would hit the spot.  Bayou Beer Garden shares a patio with its sister bar Bayou Wine Garden. Bacchanal is obviously the best spot in the city for outdoor wine and music - they won’t have sports but Parleaux Beer Lab around the corner should.

Saffron. This was the best dining experience I’ve had in almost three months in NOLA. We went when they opened in 2017 and it was great, but tonight they were just operating on full cylinders. I remember going to Shaya after they won their James Beard award in 2016 and there just being an energy among the staff - that’s what I felt here (two years after its own James Beard nomination).

I obviously wouldn’t recommend it if you come here once a year, but if Shaya is on your list, this should be too. Higher, actually. It’s Indian, but the cooking of an Indian immigrant who came to New Orleans thirty years ago to work in a hotel and remained to raise a family and become a New Orleanian himself. Chef Vilkhu actually came to every diner in person this evening, and both his kids work the floor.

Edit: not pictured is the curried gumbo, but the NYT does it justice.

Ms. Mae’s (now officially Igor’s Ms. Mae’s the Club, with a patio and a clean bathroom and a curfew - strange times).

I forgot about thread for a long time and have a few years of pictures saved up. Wednesday was the anniversary of NOLA’s first COVID case, and we were lucky enough to have been in town for Mardi Gras and New Years. What a different world.

Brothers III, best country jukebox in town. These pics are from the Steppers and Prince of Whales. The Prince of Whales that year entered out of a house on St. Charles. A tourist family from Georgia stopped and asked if it was a parade. I waved at the band, weed smoke and kids selling vodka and beer out of red rider wagons and said, sure. At least I was honest.
Edit: incredibly I made it out to Bar Marilou and Peche.  I miss my pre-COVID endurance
Edit: in the last video you’ll see a girl with a Brees jersey. She was with Steve Gleason, who is pretty much now a patron saint of New Orleans.  Didn’t take any footage but the second line loved having him out there

Yet another edit: in the Steppers coming out video you’ll see a guy in a yellow jersey and cowboy hat. That former poster from TOS scrumptiouschef. He has been here in the 9th ward for a while.

The Roosevelt if you really, really want to impress.

Driving from Houston to NOLA today and staying at The Roosevelt with my wife and 4 kids. Got a suite and an adjacent room and the shit was on sale like there was a pandemic. I think it’s costing us the AMEX points equivalent of like $1200 for 3 nights.

Looks like a bunch of us have similar-ish ideas and timing. My kids have never seen New Orleans and we like traveling with them, so figured a Spring Break roadie might be fun.

Taking everyone to some place called Bourbon House that my wife picked out and said it looked kid friendly, for tonight. I’m not in love with that one so if anybody happens to have a better idea given context, I’m all ears.

Going to Ralph’s in the Park for brunch tomorrow and then doing shit in the park with everyone. Going to Cafe Amelie tomorrow evening, which I’ve also never heard of so I don’t know what in the fuck is going on here. Then we’re taking them on a ghost tour at 8pm. Will show them as much interesting stuff as we can during the day, including the FQ.

Still haven’t figured out breakfast and/or lunch on Monday but I’ll retrace this thread and think it through. Hitting the WW2 Museum that day as well. Got a sitter and taking the wife to Clancy’s on Monday. Lots of choices, but I love that place and it’s as NOLA as anything.

Hitting Parkway on the way out of town on Tuesday and taking everybody to one of the swamp parks on the way home.

I’m vaccinated and we’ve traveled during this thing, but fuck me if I haven’t had to drop or reschedule 4 trips during corona after never dropping a trip in my adult life. Pretty excited to see New Orleans again. We went there the last weekend of Feb last year and it was the last normal trip of our life. Going to Vegas in 3 weeks after having to reschedule because of the damned ice storm. Feels good to getting back to the getting in some form.

We stayed at the The Saint for a long summer weekend a few years back. There was apparently a big swingers convention in town and many were staying at that hotel for it. Foam parties and other shit in the hotel. While the concept of a swingers convention might sound fun to some, let me warn you, this was 1000s of ugly, fat, drunk, high people without any inhibitions. It was mildly disturbing, but also some sadly great people watching.

Your kids would have loved the Audubon Insectarium, but it closed down over the summer unfortunately.  Drago's has good, solid food and excellent chargrilled oysters and is kid friendly.  Parkway for poboys and fries would be another good place for everyone.  Acme has good food also and it might not be packed to gills like it normally is.

Lines are back at Acme, walked by yesterday. The Zoo is open, so that’s always a great option. City Park is fantastic, and you can walk down to Bayou St John as well (my favorite neighborhood). There is actually a Cafe du Monde in the Park near Ralph’s that has live music on Sundays.

@closetojumping I’ve never been to Bourbon House but my wife did a bridal luncheon there and I recall it being pretty busy. If you don’t mind driving, all of the Mid-City spots are very family friendly (Mandina’s, Liuzza’s Bienville for creole-Italian, Liuzza’s by the track for fried seafood and po boy) as well as the Uptown spots like Pascal Manales, Joey K’s and Casamentos. For Monday, I always see lots of families at Cochon Butcher (and they will have red beans). If y’all want crawfish Bevi Seafood is the spot to go.

edit: Also, the swingers came back a few months ago and, well, you know what happened.

Bars are now open for limited indoor service, but many have set up outdoor situations (I had no idea that Snake and Jakes, Brothers III and Ms. Mae’s all had back patios). I generally stay away from the Quarter but it’s pretty open (in a bad way - Bourbon gets absolutely packed).
Ah, Snake and Jake's. That brings back lots of memories. If you left there and it was still dark, you were doing it wrong.

I've not been to NOLA in years, but a friend from college is the LeBlanc in LeBlanc and Smith.

So I always recommend his places. I've been to Sylvain a number of times in 2013-2015 and it was always awesome. Last time I was in the city was 2015, but yeah...

Wait, you are college friends with Robert Leblanc?!? I’ve only met him in passing as a guest a few times, but we love his places. What a small town - about a month ago we spotted him at a bar/restaurant owners council at Snake and Jakes on a rain Saturday afternoon. Great to be a fly on that wall. His new hotel, The Chloe, is the hot spot in town. It’s like the Columns, but with a pool (and three blocks from the Columns). We are a few blocks away and it’s our weeknight haunt.

McHardy’s. Willie Mae’s gets the national press, but they are an easy contender for best fried chicken in town. Story here. 68B7E915-21CE-4DA8-A8B2-763D0F8EA8B7.thumb.jpeg.656335d58d2feb05787dca780d9ee9db.jpeg4022F042-9F95-48C4-A018-2C7C94A5A7EC.thumb.jpeg.d1a98f731fa4a2538c209c9b6bcf1032.jpeg

Unless you are super into NOLA music or beer, wouldn’t recommend as it’s very out of the way. Maple Leaf is having concerts here. 5718AA01-4C08-43B8-94F8-BE591D3EE9E0.thumb.jpeg.bda1cf9e0f719071bbdcb9fcf4dd662f.jpegMarjies. Pork knuckle, beef cheek, Thai potato salad.

It was mildly disturbing, but also some sadly great people watching.

has dinner at your hotel tonight, excellent meal

Is Frenchmen pretty open now?  Dat Dog open too?

Yes and no. All of the clubs are still closed, but dba has bands busking outside Fri-Sun and the Royal Frenchmen Hotel has music every night. Dat Dog is open (though I like the OG on Mag more). Adolfo’s is also open on the weekends and is using Apple Barrel for dining. I would expect Maison, Cafe Negril and 30/90 to reopen in the next month as they are well-situated to comply with the city’s regs.

FYI, Adolfo’s is hands down my favorite creole-Italian place in the city. Highly recommend it when hitting up Frenchmen.

Two weeks ago. Flounder stuffed with crawfish and topped with ocean sauce.

It’s been surpassed by other beer bars, but I’ve been going for almost 15 years and its patio and location can’t be beat. Tracy’s and Parasol’s are also great dives. For quality cocktails and wine, Cavan and Bouligny Tavern are close by as well. And if y’all want to stay in the area, you’ve got the Columns and Chloe as well.

We did the the family tasting menu at Saba 2 years ago when we had a fairly big group and I've never gotten so much food at a nice restaurant in my life.  It was insane.  We were already stuffed before they brought us a leg of lamb.  The server apologized for forgetting to bring us 2 roasted chickens instead of one so they boxed it up for us with the other leftovers.  One of the couples we were with live in New Orleans so we gave it all to them.  It was enough food for multiple meals for them.
