Las Vegas go hard or go home thread

The Bellagio’s guest rooms are getting an upgrade, with a design inspired by the property’s most iconic feature: its fountains.

The Strip property will be updating the 2,568 rooms in its main tower. Renovations are expected to take place through the summer, with the first remodeled rooms available for guests in April.

“As the world returns to travel in the months and years ahead, Bellagio will be ready with this gorgeous new room product, as well as health and safety protocols throughout the resort to ensure guests feel welcome, comfortable and safe,” Bellagio President and COO Ann Hoff said in a Thursday news release.

The new designs come from Chicago-based The Gettys Group and MGM Resorts International Design Group, and were inspired by Bellagio’s fountain show and “the movement of water, the beauty of nature and the vibrant reflections of light seen at sunrise and set,” according to the release.

Rooms will include an oversized shower, dual sinks, a built-in closet and an activity table. There also will be a built-in closet and two seating nooks. The redesigned bathrooms will have an oversized shower with a doorless entry and a dual-sink granite vanity with backlit mirrors.

The Premier King Rooms will have a blue palette meant to reflect the sky just before sunrise, while the Premier Two Queen Rooms feature yellow tones inspired by sunsets.

When tasked with redesigning the guest rooms for such an iconic resort, we wanted the designs to transcend cultures and speak to an international audience,” Ben Nicholas, senior principal at The Gettys Group, said in the release. “We took inspiration from water, which is synonymous with Bellagio, and blended in elements of light and nature, to create spaces that make guests feel at home.”

I went in June for 2 nights.  I out a pretty sizeable bet on KC to win the SB last year, but wasn't out there to cash it.  In late May I noticed my bet ticket was fading and almost unreadable.  I flew out midweek for 2 nights to cash it in.  I stayed at Cosmo and the casino was packed.  I only tried to gamble once and found an empty BJ table.  I lost my ass for an hour and tried to find another one but they were all packed so I just went and sat at an empty bar in one of the restaurants.  I played golf the next day, cashed my ticket, and stayed in my room the rest of the time.  It really sucked.

That sounds really fucking lame.

Bellagio room renovations underway. First since 2015.

Those room designs do nothing for me.  They look trendy and very unimaginative.  And the fact that the writer of that article calls them "sexy af" tells me I'm probably right.

My son & DIL stayed there 3 weeks ago, said it was ok but nothing outstanding. They were in a Bellagio Suite... the small separate one bedroom.

I really don't care about the rooms other than they are clean and reasonably quiet. Am I trying to impress the hooker? No, I am not.

The good ones perform better when they’re impressed.  Or so I’ve heard.

I haven't set foot downtown in probably 10 years, but Circa is in my wheelhouse. So many bars and screens. The giant swimming sports book looks amazing, but personally I don't want to sweat and get dehydrated watching games. Would be fun for like 30-60 minutes.

Prepare to be distracted by the PR girl leading this tour, and a couple of pool waitresses:

I wonder what the LCB laws are. If they tried it in Texas they'd be fucked. It specifies 1 dram per drink. They are serving half drinks.

Do you even private cabana to get out of the heat, bro?

Seriously though, that pool sports book looks badass.  Kinda falls under the, why isn’t every other resort already doing that? category.  I mean there are table games at all the pools.  Why not a sports book.

I wish...that cabana would cost about what I usually spend on a trip. I was surprised how good the screens look in the sunlight. I guess if they crank the brightness up enough it works out. As for why no one does it, just look at the typical crowd that hangs out in the sports book, and imagine them (us) shirtless outdoors

Virgin update:

After delaying opening plans twice, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas plans to open its doors next month.

The renovated resort-casino is set to go live March 25. The off-Strip property had originally been scheduled to open in the fall of 2020, but continued to push back plans after the pandemic caused Las Vegas tourism rates to plummet.

The site had been home to the Hard Rock Hotel prior to February 2020, when the $200 million makeover began. The company had said it expects to bring back about 300 former Hard Rock employees.

The reimagined resort, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, will have three hotel towers with more than 1,500 rooms, a 5-acre pool and entertainment complex, a 4,500-capacity theater and a showroom that can accommodate 650 guests.

Its 60,000-square-foot casino will be operated by Connecticut-based Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, making it the first tribally operated casino in the Las Vegas resort corridor.

There will be 12 food and beverage venues, including One Steakhouse from brother David and Michael Morton, Nobu, Casa Calavera from Hakkasan Group, and Pizza Forte by local restaurateurs the Ferraro Family.

On Thursday afternoon, Virgin Hotels’ website showed bookings available starting April 7, with room rates starting at $155.

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) will resume 24/7 hotel operations at Mandalay Bay, Park MGM and The Mirage resorts effective March 3. The change comes as the Company sees increased interest in travel to Las Vegas. Previously, each property had implemented selective mid-week closures related to decreased business volumes due to COVID-19.

"As we begin to see positive signs around the public's sentiment about traveling, coupled with important progress on the vaccination front and decreasing COVID-19 case numbers, bringing Mandalay Bay, Park MGM and The Mirage back to full-week operations is an important step for us," said Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts' CEO & President. "We remain optimistic about Las Vegas' recovery and our ability to bring employees back to work as business volumes allow us to do so."

In accordance with state guidelines, the Company also recently announced several of its live entertainment shows will return to the stage in February and early March.

Days and hours of operation at all venues will vary. For a full list of offerings, and to make reservations, please visit mgmresorts.com

I like Virgin's general policy of giving you more than you expected throughout their businesses. May have to make them my next stop. Just disliked the off strip location.

But the location discourages the riffraff rednecks from bumfuck from walking through.

Probably a lose/lose (or a wash - depending how you want to look at it) in the long run for them honestly.  They're making up for those fees somewhere.  They're not just doing away with them, they're hiking something up to cover it.  They even say as much in that thing that was posted.

For every fat middle-aged generic midwestern guy out there who says, "fuck yeah, I'm booking Virgin, they don't charge hidden fees" there will be another fat middle-aged generic midwestern guy out there who says, "fuck Virgin, their shit has gotten way too expensive".

Oh,  I get it,  but I'd much rather have a hotel tell me the rate is 200 a night as opposed to saying it's 75 with 25 in parking, 25 in resort....blah blah blah.

And it was very refreshing to not have any corporate speak in a press release. You call something horseshit and I'll give you the nod.

Not me man, I like to feel like I got a great deal, have a kickass time, then wonder when I get home why I'm a lot poorer than I was when I went, but assume a lot of it went toward hookers and blow, which I can justify.  And I find their use of inappropriate language to be offensive.

But it will work.  It might not work for you, but it will work for someone.

Virgin has to do something to draw attention; what with their location and Resort World coming online later this year.  Best to suck up some of the media oxygen now then try to do it later in the summer.

What will be interesting is if one of the majors follows suit.  Virgin is small enough that it's not really competition for the major strip operators, but if one of them were to make the leap with similar changes in the coming months, you can bet your ass the others will take notice.

Probably a smart move. I think Vegas is going to have a rough go of it even when we emerge from Covid. Back in the late 90's early 00's I used to love Vegas. Gambling, 24/7 partying, cheap lodging food/drink etc... Could not be replicated anywhere in the country. Over the years I would still try and get out there couple of times a year, but the Vegas of today is a much different place (setting aside Covid).

I can play poker in Austin, easily gamble on sports online (and hopefully through legalized sports betting sometime soon), and my ability to drink for 96 straight hours has waned considerably as well, so the 24/7 aspect has lost its luster.  And while Vegas still has lots of cool shit, its no longer cheap. Fuck all your resort fees, chincy comps, $200 a night rooms, etc...Juice aint worth the squeeze for me. Vegas losing it gambling exclusivity is a problem for its long term health.
