Nathan For You

Angry Gorilla

Yeah, I'd never heard of it until Junior and Gordo started talking about it last week. Watched the "Goat in the water" clip after they were doing it during the mix the other day. It was mildly entertaining. I won't put in much effort unless there's substantially funnier stuff than that.

Goat in the water wasn't good, not sure why they are fixated on that.  Try the rest.  It's on Hulu.

I own a Summit Ice jacket, and it is actually the best jacket I ever bought. Highly recommend it. Also, did you know 6 million jews died in the Holocaust?
I'm late to this comment, but I have the jacket and the sweatshirt & sweatpants combo. The jacket is my favorite jacket and the sweatpants are super comfy.

Just watched episode 1 of The Rehearsal. So over the top ridiculous and stupid, and hilarious in its own weird way. Classic fielder. Can’t wait to watch the rest of the season.

The rehearsal at the bar had me dying. So did the skeet shooting/pool bit.

The Rehearsal is interesting from a human experience perspective and getting a glimpse of who these characters are, but this version of Nathan using people is a bit cringey for me. It has some funny moments, but it's too serious overall which dampens (darkens?) the comedy. Nathan For You was at its best when the business solution was funny, innovative and it felt like the people were sort of in on it. This feels more like exploitation, as I don't think they understand what's happening to them, although a few of them kind of deserve it.

I love Nathan's work, and his experimental TV mind, but I have a hard time watching this show. I think the crazy lady living in a farmhouse reminds me too much of my mom, a crazy religious prepper who wants to live off the grid and stay away from the government...

The off the grid lady is such a buzz kill. I wonder if there’s a huge comedic payoff coming, but right now her storyline is exploitive, depressing, and yes kind of dark.

I thought the pilot was hilarious. The trivia guy was so worked up and in his own head over something very minor. He made a perfect candidate for the rehearsal.

lots of spoilers in my comments. Go watch episode 5, if you like Nathan, this is the turning point of the show.

Spoiler

This show makes me feel so conflicted, but I think that's the point. The rehearsals he did with the fake Angelas were tremendous, what a gut punch of reality for Nathan. When she accused him of using her as a punch-line for his show, and he kind of shuts down and quietly tries to move past it, it really makes you wonder how he actually feels about his work and if his lack of emotion is Real Nathan. I can't tell if he is being self-critical and concerned about the direction of the show and how it impacts these people, or if he's manipulating the premise to make himself appear more sympathetic. I suspect he knows what he's doing, in that he's using these people for his own entertainment, and he doesn't really care because that's the job. Real Angela seems to have caught on to a lot of this, and calls him out on it a few times, rightfully so.

I love that dumb bar, and how he keeps bringing it back. It's constantly revisiting the way he thinks, and it's a safe space for him to get away from conflict. Filling it with the Fielder Method students is hilarious. A home away from his fake home with Angela. I half-expect him to break it down and move it to LA, then reopen as an actual bar, but he lives alone upstairs in an apartment. That could be the premise of his next show. Nate’s Lizard Lounge would be a good name for a show!

And just WOW, every scene with real Angela is so cringe-inducing for me.  I hate her so much, she can't enjoy anything that's not Jesus-centric. No dressing up for Halloween, no pretending to eat poop, no public school, no any tangentially satanic stuff, and lots of fighting between the parents. It's like he's making fun of my childhood, and it makes me sad-laugh. Also, “maybe you should just give me a list of everything that’s satanic so that I know how to avoid it” was a highlight for me. Seriously, my house when I was a kid, was the one handing out pamphlets to Trick-or-Treaters about why it was wrong for Christians to celebrate it. We would try to keep outdoor cats in our garage around that holiday so the Satanists wouldn't catch them and use them for their rituals...  gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh bad memories.

Anyways, I changed my mind, this show is brilliant.

Yep. Episode 6 was just weird AF. I can't remember laughing once.

I hope Season 2, if there is another season, is more like the pilot.

The opening birthday party scene was hilarious. The weird was him potentially destroying a kid’s childhood.

Again, this show makes me feel awful for some of the people. That's not a feeling you want to have when watching a comedy.  I felt terrible for Dr Fart and his mom, presumably Miss Fart.  I was holding out hope for some redemption here, but we got nothing but ambivalence. Just a poor 6 year old kid wishing he had a real dad, and then Nathan taking things too far (probably by accident). But in that finale episode there wasn't some douche or crazy person to make fun of, Dr Fart and mom were sympathetic characters that you can't make fun of, which really leaves a void for this show's type of comedy.

It's not really clear if the Nathan on camera is real or a character made for TV, though it doesn't really matter. He can be good for a few laughs, but can't carry the show, he needs those other people to make the show really funny. Just think of all the crazy characters from NfY, Austin Bowers, the exorcism guy, the Movement guy, Bill Gates impersonation guy and male porn PI guy. Those people were funny in so many different ways that worked well with Nathan playing the socially challenged straight man to contrast and be a foil of comedy.  This episode didn't have any of that, it was just sad.

I agree with people above, episode 1 had promise as an episodic premise. Callbacks to the bar and other characters is great, using actors to play other people is great, rehearsing scenes can be funny, and keeping everything rehearsal to one episode would work fine. The kid raising thing should not have lasted more than 2 episodes, we don't need a Nathan character story arc for this style of show. Also, I would advise against using kids as a focal point in the future, that gave me some really mixed feelings.
