Afghan War ending, foretold by The Onion 10 years Ago [DT thread ruined by politics]

I noticed that we acknowledged that we're leaving behind over 100 fixed wing and rotor aircraft to the Taliban.

However, we are taking every single drone back with us.

I found that curious.

That stuff is worthless to the Taliban. Even if by happenstance they have Mahmoud Muhajideen who can fly a Black Hawk, there’s no techs to maintain them and no parts coming. The real risk is the tech ending up in the hands of state level competitors and adversaries like Iran, China and Russia. The airframes getting left behind are not F-35s, they are older platforms that have been exported around the world and that those countries almost certainly have seen or don’t need to see. I’m sure the sensitive electronics and weaponry has been destroyed or stripped and that’s all that’s interesting.

Now the latest JSOC drones? That’s a different story. Those countries would pay top dollar to get their mitts on one of those.

Dear Taliban,

The keys are in the ignition. Sometimes you have to keep your foot on the pedal for a few seconds before the engine turns over.

Best,

The United States of America

Figure that the maintenance requirements in that environment will ground them in short time.  The drones on the other hand might have some tech that we don't want getting shipped over to Iran.

It was a continual headache to keep the ANA’s legacy Soviet/Russian helicopters in the air, and that was with the U.S. government and all of NATO working to make it happen. And those are simpler and more rugged machines. The Taliban isn’t going to be operating UH-60s.

well, how did we do?

I would give it a solid C+ on an impossible to ace task. We knew the impact wasn't going to be great. Really sucks that some innocent people died. War is hell.

10/10 Biden's Response

10/10 Speed/Sense of Urgency

10/10 Statement of Purpose and Example

5/10 Efficacy/Impact

0/10 Death of innocent people

In hindsight would you have preferred we didn't avenge the innocent Americans in this way or at all?

Really curious your input.

I'm not a Biden fan and get downvoted for criticizing him from a left leaning perspective but the man finally had the balls to get us out of this 20 year trillion+ mess. Everyone before him kicked the can down the road & he finally took it on the chin & is doing what needs to be done.

LOL he took it on the chin because he completely fucked up the pull out. You're making it a false choice. Either stay and this doesn't happen or it has to be like this. It could've been get citizens and Afghan allies out then pull out troops and shut down shop. No kudos should be given for the way this was done. Biden and his leadership couldn't of fucked this up more.

it felt like a mostly empty act of vengeance done to satiate the US public's desire for revenge. and it looks like we fucked it up and killed some innocent kids in the process.

so how did we do?

Sure, not great. But wasn't great an impossible outcome? Do you only engage in something you can do great? That is literally the definition of Great being the enemy of good.

Knowing what you know with the benefit of hindsight: what would you have done differently?

I meant in response to the bomb that killed 13 Americans, as we were trying to get the heck out of dodge. The sucker punch and the stab in the back as we are trying to walk out of the exit door.

What would you have done differently in response to the 13 deaths, like I said, I give it a C+.

unfortunately 20 years of us trying to prop up a "legitimate" government/military failed in less than a week. but sure, let's just narrow our 'we fucked up' window to the past month or so.

The withdrawal was really fucked up and is solely on Biden. He had the opportunity to get it right with a coherent plan. He also ignored intelligence reports about how fast the country could fall. Also, you have to always plan for the worst. He did not. There are some simple tenants in a withdrawal and one of the 1st is you don't withdraw forces before human assets are removed and destroying of hardware you don't want falling into enemy hands. It's indefensible.

It's a completely separate discussion of how we stayed there 20 yrs and had multiple presidents do their best to screw up the original mission and turn it to nation building exercise. Don't mix the 2. Both are horrible fuck ups but separate in nature.

Spreading something easily debunked (a photo from over a year ago) is so fucking dumb.

It's like Laura Ingraham posting that Biden didn't show up yesterday - when the cable media was literally filming him and Jill there.  I watched it with my own two eyes.

And they all are allowed to get away with it.

That's like setting your house on fire and giving the Fire Dept a high five for putting out the fire so fast. It's your damn fault the house was on fire. We shouldn't of even had to do that large scale of an evacuation in such a short time frame. It's a product of the disastrous plan. Enjoy the hostage videos to come BTW because we still left a lot of people.

So, you would not have responded to the 13 deaths and just chalked it up as the cost of retreat and doing business, is it?

Oh, the doha agreement the Taliban violated? Once again though regardless of the doha agreement doesn't mean the withdrawal had to be a complete shitshow like it was. You're confusing issues. The planning and execution of the withdrawal is independent of the doha agreement.

what did the taliban violate in the doha agreement?

My excursion to the shitty side of town is over. I'll let you guys get back to slapping each other on the back for how Biden handled the withdrawal because he got us out and that's really what matters. After all, he did get 100K out in 2 weeks so that's great! Doesn't matter how it was done because there was just no way it could've gone better or how we broke our promise to countless 1000s of afghans and stranded US citizens. I can't even debate with that mindset.

Hey, @PassiveAggressiveCoach, GRHorn/Muy Frio already pantsed himself arguing this point last week.  Maybe educate yourself before tossing out roundly disproved hot takes in a forum where you're ill-equipped to have a grown-up conversation.

At the point in time the right wing hate machine doesn’t even care not only if they lie, but even when they look like idiots with their lies and get called on it. It’s why GRUHorn never leaves. They believe in nothing. Or are just getting paid. Usually a worthless amount but whatever.

I mean the guy built a five star hotel on the Vegas strip and forgot to put a casino in it. Now it’s a run down piece of shit because nobody wanted to go there even before he started fucking up America. Why? Because it’s a Vegas strip hotel with no fucking casino in it.
