Wichita Falls

If there's a bright center to the universe, Wichita Falls is the place it's furthest from. There's a burrito place near the hospital that's decent, Sevis Burritos. 8th Street Coffee Shop is decent. Otherwise, get the hell out of that place as fast as you can.

The whole place went to hell when Uncle Lynn's burned down.

Your wife would love Gypsy Kit (tacos) or Gidgets (sandwhiches) for lunch.  Both close at 2 every day.  Highlander Public House is great for dinner.  Bricktown Brewery is pretty good as well.  For a great burger send her to Ronnie's Burgers.  Let me know if you need directions or addresses.  Or just send me her number and I will take good care of her.

Many thanks.  That will give her some options.

Thanks, she doesn't mind a good beer joint and is with a co-worker.  Unless it's a real shithole, she'd be ok going to try it out.

You just ruled out 99.9% of the establishments in Wichita County and the surrounding 100 miles.

Grew up there and use to love going to Bar L (Red Draws!), Casa Manana, Stanley's (RIP Mr. Hill), and Scott's.  I haven't been to any of those in 15+ years.

Now when we make it back home, Mom picks the spots, since she knows where to go.  As mentioned, 8th St is a good spot, and Pat's is still damn good.  Also, there's a hole in the wall Greek place out by the base that was really good.  Hibiscus Cafe, I think.

No, my wife's family is from Henrietta and Scotland,  her mom is in a retirement home in WF now. So I am there a few times a year. Wife just got back tonight from visiting her. Man that drive from Driftwood is a beating, 5 1/2 hrs. up Hwy.281.

My aunt lived in Wichita Falls for a great part of her adult life.  I used to go visit her for a week or so every summer.  One of my fondest childhood memories.  We didn't eat out a whole lot, but I seem to remember McBrides Steakhouse being pretty decent.  Seems like it's still there.  Also Prines and their ham sandwich is pretty fucking good, as well as the brisket.  Remember, this is the reminiscence of an old dude about many years ago.

An update on some of the places people have mentioned in the thread...

Prine's BBQ - not worth it anymore

Scott's Drive in - very hit or miss now

Pat's Drive in - Excellent (only reason I didn't mention it was location and op's wife being alone)

Casa Manana -still decent but not as good as it used to be

McBride's Steakhouse - good steaks for WF

Stanley's - closed down

8th Street Coffeehouse - excellent, also try OddDuck Coffee or Frank n Joes

Sevi's - still good

Bar L - same as always

Hope this helps anyone that is visiting.

Sorry to hear this about your wife.  My hometown, mom (no pics) still there. I ate at Sevis’ when it was a closet size place across the river bridge on N Burnett. The little old Mexican lady would roll out the tortillas and grill them while you wait. No telling what was in that meat. Freakin awesome.  It’s only a shell of its former self. Ate at Scott’s last time I was in town, wasn’t as good as I remember.

Thanks for recs txhorns, been to some of these and will try others since I am there 3-4 times a year. Not to thread jack, but I usually end up trying places around Midwestern and the campus area and noticed there is still a Pelicans there. Had forgotten all about that chain, used to eat at the one by Ridglea Mall in Ft.Worth back in the 80's. Also played tennis at Hamilton Park, and you being a Surly poster I will assume that one of those places in that neighborhood must be yours.

I highly recommend heading downtown to the Highlander Public House next time you are in town.  It's by far my favorite place in town right now.  As for right around MSU Bricktown Brewery is just down from there at the mall and has excellent pizza.  Next time you are in town hit me up and maybe we can play some tennis, even though I suck at it.

I had a love/hate relationship with Stanley’s beanie burger; loved it when I ordered it and ate the first few bites, hated it a couple hours later.

P2 is a WF institution; steak on garlic with a red draw for the win.

If your wife likes drinking beer in her car, P2 it is!

P2 has tables...   Fun fact, P2 was considered a “stag bar” back in the day, not in  the strip club sense, but it was pretty much “male only” during  daylight hours.  Many WF power brokers (doctors, attys, judges, oilmen, etc) would go there, get hammered at lunch and eventually make it back to the office.  If womenfolk went to P2, they (and their man) would stay in the parking lot and get curb service.

Anyone here besides me actually live in WF?
I live SW of Burk. Grew up N of Electra.

I'll add a couple.
Willie's Place makes a beanie burger, and has a pretty good rep. I'm not big on cheese, and it's a little too cheesy for my taste.
Glass Kitchen is where I go if I want a chili cheeseburger.
Back Porch is like a Bennigans/Parkway Grill type place. I have always enjoyed what I've eaten there.
Branding Iron is where I go for bbq. Cash only. I don't get brisket there. If I want brisket, I'll be doing that myself. Same with a ribeye. But, if you want some somewhere close to downtown (say courthouse), that's where I go.
TGS Cupcakery. Don't know, never been, but I hear good things.
Ate at the Pho place by the mall. Not too bad.

Are you voluntarily going to Wichita Falls? If so, why?

Casinos, right across the river.

Speaking of “right across the river” and WF dining, there are/were catfish restaurants located just across the Red River in a few places in the WF sphere of influence; Bill’s in Waurika, The Peach Orchard in Terral and (back in the day)Tinker’s across the Red from Burkburnett.  It was said that back in the day, they were set up for Texans because the beer drinking age for girls was 17 when it was 18 in TX.  Don’t know if it was true or not, but Bill’s is popular to this day for Wichitans to make a weekend visit.  I try to visit there every few years when I have WF duty.
