GOLD CUP 2023 (General Discussion)

This T&T v St. Kitts & Nevis match is a little rough on the ol’ eye balls.

Full scale middle-aged former athletes’ competitive weekend league vibes.

The players definitely care. The field is soaked. The play is ugly. You don’t feel a goal is nearly as likely as a straight red card sometime in the second half.

This field is a swamp. IF there are any scores, the first one will come from someone falling, be it a defender that leaves an attacker in free against the keeper, or an offensive player who then is generously awarded a PK.

EDIT: WRONG. TnT scores off a nice looping ball out wide that's received off the chest, settled and quickly struck. Surprisingly nice goal.

Really out of character for CONCACAF.

White defender for SKN channeled Miazga/J. Morris by keeping the opposing goal scorer onside.  It this guy chose to raise his hand for the flag as he was clearly keeping a the T&T guy on.

Shocked that a squad like SKN would have a defensive breakdown.

PS- T&T’s #20 has a Zardes-level first touch.

Apparently the combined population of St. Kitts AND Nevis is about 47,000 people. That is smaller than UT.

I was checking the area out.

And it looks like there are a couple of places that I would like to visit.

Booby Island, for obvious reasons.
And I am interested to find out whether all of the ladies in Gingerland are descended from “Ginger” on “Gilligan’s Island”.

That should have been a second yellow in the Qatari defender who went from holding both hands behind his back and then moved his arm out to block a shot as he turned his body.

Dr. Joe just said that Qatar should have gotten a yellow.

Then Qatar boots the ball away after fouling ear their own box and THAT should have also been a yellow.

Qatar, and their futbolistas, suck(s)!

So which one would you say is the "Group of Death?"

I wouldn't be shocked to see Costa Rica fail to make it out of Group C. I wouldn't call it the Group of Death, but they don't have the drop off the rest of the groups have.

Casual el tri fan… is this tournament unrelated to the US beat down last week? I saw Mexico fired their coach and the fans were gonna boycott because the team has been so shitty the past few years. Shocked that they put on Honduras that heavily. Is Honduras just that bad? No way can a team improve that much that quick by firing a coach.

It’s like a JNIP family reunion.

This shit will never not be funny. 😂

Panama 1 - 0 Costa Rica

1st half

No Costa Rican pressure on a Panamanian throw in on the left side. Then the Panamanian sends in a lovely curling cross and anothe Panamanian comes flying In towards the near post and heads a quick ball between the near post and the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Just about halftime

The Costa Rican back line is a mess. Como se dice Aaron Long?

Now 0-2.

And agree on the JNip thing. That shit is funny.

So Guadaloupe takes a 1-0 advantage into intermission, but the Canucks equalize right out of the half. About 20 minutes later, an own goal from Guadaloupe gives the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead.

And that was gonna be all she wrote ... until Canada returns the favor with an own goal of their own deep into stoppage time, leaving it 2-2.

Kind of a shit game despite all the scoring, though.

Thierry Henry's parents were from Guadelupe and Martinique - would have been cool to see him in a Gold Cup match for either.

Transfermkt has their current roster at €10M.

Not exactly stacked.

it is relative to the rest of CONCACAF (outside of the top 4):

this is from 3 days ago so the actual games for many had yet to occur.

LoL poor Cuba and St. Kitts.

And double lulz at Costa Rica. That's $8M starting value with an aging Joel Campbell playing ... so I guess the rest of the team is worth about ... tree fiddy?

Thought exercise: why does Jamaica so routinely underdeliver? Must be an organizational issue because it seems like the Reggae Boyz have always had some talent at key positions.

It all depends on how many dual nats born in England they can convince to play for them.

11 of the 13 players they have playing in England were born in England.

It's like the entire team is Baloguns and Musahs.

I get it but the point is that Guadeloupe is more like playing a team like Costa Rica or Honduras rather than St. Kitts or Barbados.
