Best anti-virus software for a Lenovo laptop?

You don't need an additional AV software if you have Windows 11 and enable the built in virus/malware protection.

This. 3rd party AV is garbage. In fact it typically causes more issues than it solves. Haven't had it on a personal computer forever.

it is on. I keep getting notifications (until I turned off the notifications) that I only have a month of free AV protection.

Huh? Microsoft Defender AV is free... or at least, it is in Windows 11.

It's in Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Windows Security -> Open Windows Security -> Virus & threat protection.

Or just open the Windows Security thing from the system tray.

That's McAfee or whatever bloat/promoware came on the laptop.  Just uninstall it.  If it's running, it's probably creating some conflicts with M$ AV and slowing things down.
