Seriously

OU is, yet again, graduating an ace.  Don't tell me the Love family can't find $1.25 million in their couch cushions and make her an offer.  Gasso will get over the "unfairness" to the rest of her roster.

All it takes is one former player, married to someone rich, to want to do what Tech did and make NC a better offer.

Hell it would be stupid of Canady to not enter portal just to get bids going. You know Florida, Oklahoma, Tech, etc would all be in on it. I think we'd even test the waters considering TK is all we have.

No doubt, but Brister, Wallace and Hunter haven't done *much* of *anything* is the problem.

Brister can allegedly play in the infield, but what we saw was not pretty.  Wallace is perfectly fine if she wants to stay as a pinch runner.  Hunter can't really hit good P4 pitching - she's a fine pinch hitter in spots, but your DP cannot be hitting sub-.250

The fact any regular starter on our roster hits below .300 is pretty abysmal. Goode is just shy of .300, but she has power (9 HR) and has saved our bacon at SS many times.  Bennett is going back to the bench when Goode moves back to 2B - not even sure she warrants being a defensive sub.  Hunter can come in as a pinch hitter, if she wants to stay.  Wallace, as a pinch runner.  Neither Hunter nor Wallace has a defensive position to play.

Hunter is going to be a great slow pitch player in a co -ed league some day. She has a very long swing which is why she can't handle anything middle in. Out over the plate, ball go far. Inside or up and in...bat is scared.

So it still baffles me that we're not facing her in an Oregon uni this week. I guess ol' Phil simply doesn't care about softball. Maybe we'll confirm that after this series.

I don't think he does; they didn't even bother to make a true counteroffer for Mike, who had all but 1 of their WCWS appearances when he left.  They let someone with an .800 winning percentage just leave.  5 Pac 12 titles in a 6 year span is no joke - the old Pac 12 had some legit coaching when he left (KIP, Heather Tarr, Mike Candrea, John Rittman)

Sorry if this has already been covered but do y’all think the Tech SS was completely unprepared on the single? It doesn't seem like she got a good break on the ball. I think she had a shot at it in a normal situation.

Probably because she was not expecting a swing on 3-0 intentional walk pitch.

Because of the  way aces are used, particularly in the postseason, it really doesn’t make sense for us to enter the fray.

TK has proven she is up to the task to be the ace you ride in the postseason.  With the WCWS format, it truly isn't that difficult to ride one person. Win with ace, day off, win with ace, day off, win with ace.  Day off and then you need to win 2 games in 3 days with your ace.

She had one bad game last year against a 4-peat team. Move on.

You can assemble a "staff" to handle the regular season - aka, who is pitching the middle game of your conference series and your preseason tournament games against G5 and lower P4 teams, so your ace can handle the top dawg non-conf matchups.

Mac, Cit, Cam backing up TK is how we got here.  Programs weren't champing at the bit to steal away any of those 3.  They did their jobs to not force TK to throw 200+ innings before June.  Cam, Cit and Hannah Wells can do that next year as well.

Texas has to replace both corner infielders and/or an OF spot if Stewie moves to one of those spots + finding an actual DP who can hit the ball at an elite level.

$1m+ goes a long way to luring those players to come play alongside TK, Reese, Vivi, Goode, Stewie, Maloney and Henry and make another run.  IIRC, Mac was only a $100,000 investment (+ snacks).  Arguably had 2 of bigger postseason starts this year (Clemson game 3, Tenn semifinals)

This discussion between you guys is trending towards clueless fantasy.

What does "in on it" mean, here? Oklahoma, Florida and Texas were "in on it" last year, too. Then Cody Campbell's wife told him to make Canady an offer that ended the conversation. No one else was even vaguely close to $1M.

Do you think that magically changes this season? Gasso goes and sells $1M for a one year rental? OU is committed to the softball program, but they don't have ready access to $1M for a single player. They don't have that kind of scratch for more than a small handful of football players, either.

Florida couldn't afford to buy out Sun Belt Billy's contract. They actively decided to keep a guy that many boosters wanted gone. Now, during the heart of the 2026 recruiting class cycle for football, the UF boosters are going to spring for $1M+ for a softball player?

Good lord. If Canady gets $1M or better in this next cycle, it's because Tech re-upped or someone like Oregon went fucking bonkers. The disciplined NIL programs, and the poor ones, are not going to do it.

Also, expect more top end pitching talent to enter the portal or leverage the option to force more paydays of $100k+. That simultaneously makes Canady less valuable due to abundance and marginal gap in performance degradation between her and option 2, and also takes numerous potential bidders out of the market. Kavan, for example, is undoubtedly going to have to get paid to stay at Texas. Pickens to stay at Tenn? Won't be cheap. Rothrock at UF? Same.

You don't think Gasso couldn't sell Canady to one of the megadonors (Love family) for another title?

Softball and gymnastics is all they have. If Patty wants it, Patty gets it.

She didn't do it last year because she doesn't like having that kind of financial imbalance in the locker room between players. But they got close to 5-peating this year, she easily wants another ring.

OU is not going to throw football overboard for another title chance in softball. If they pay a softball player $1M, they create uncontrollable problems elsewhere. Softball is important at OU, but it is flatly never superseding football.

1) football

2a) softball

2b) gymnastics

If they do blow all of that up for a $1M arm in softball, no one will be more excited about them making that decision than me. I'll gladly be wrong on it. I seriously doubt I will be. That would be used to bury OU football forever in the recruiting, coaching, and portal realms.

Tech wanted to jump right into the CWS and Canady, with a few girls that can hit, was basically a guarantee to that.  For Top 8 programs it was a marginal benefit and might not pay off(one or 2 bad days of hitting and your investment is down the drain).  Tech can try to leverage this "success" to a future in the top 8, the upside for Tech was more than just an NC.

whether Canady stays at Tech or not next year, it is going to be interesting to see what happens when she is no longer around for Tech or whoever.  I agree that Tech just put the number so big that everyone said "I'm out".

It was basically Pickens and Canady near or sub 1.00 ERA and then most everyone else about 1.50+ ERA, including Bahl.  basically OU and Texas made final 4 with around 2.00 or higher ERA's.  get a coach that can focus on hitting and fielding excellence and you don't have to pay the premium for 1.50 or below ERA's and also don't have to deal with a higher potential for locker room drama(this isn't a girls sport comment, this applies everywhere when you are dealing with 18-22 year olds).

This is correct. And to be clear, replacement value conversations have been had for several years now in the big men's sports. It's going to be happening in this cycle for softball and happened with women's bball already. "If I have someone who gives me 90% of what the best player in America gives me, but I have to spend only 10% as much and can fortify other roster spots with additional savings, then that's my route" has been a thing, even for Texas in various sports.

The other thing I always bring up that everyone should factor in for these discussions is not just locker room chemistry for a single program on campus. What is being done in one sport travels quickly to other sports within every AD.

Because average players in a big revenue sport (ie football) would want at least that amount and they would use her pay as leverage to get it. Everyone, including Canady, knows that the 1 million dollars was a one off. She will get paid, I assume by Tech, but I also would be shocked if it is a million dollars again....especially if it doesn't end in a National Championship.

But softball is a niche sport. Usually has a niche donor attached to it. A former player married to a rich guy. Who knows why the Love widow was so into softball, maybe she had a horse growing up and likes that Gasso looks like Secretariat’s understudy. It’s one player on a roster, albeit one of the top 3 players in the nation, getting paid to win a title

Overpaying for a single star in basketball is a tale as old as time. It's not even a sports news story. Tech paying a softball player $1M is talked about constantly, on a national level.

I assume you understand the dynamics for priorities and traditions are different from school to school? OU expects to compete for national titles in football. Tech? Right.

If OU is funding a big payroll for softball but is telling football coaching candidates that they can't fully prioritize NIL to match the top tier in that sport, how many coaches worthy of that job are taking it? "OU has a history of hiring assistants, yada yada ". This is 2025 and any assistant worth a fuck has a good agent and other options. The first question being asked in coaching job interviews, for any sport in the college world these days, isn't "what's the salary?" or "how much is allotted for my staff?", it's "what is my NIL budget?"

For recruits in football, you cannot tell a 5 star, with $1M offers from other programs, that you cannot match, but could do X of that, and then sell everything else if the recruit knows that the school is actually paying a fucking softball player a similar offer to what the recruit has received from Texas or Georgia. Same is true for the portal.

The Loves may love softball, but OU cannot afford to alienate the rest of their donor base by poormouthing, which they are doing right fucking now, football and then balling out of control for softball.

Posted

Also I would not put it past some small-dicked Sooner donor who will be mad mean old Texas won the title and want to get Canady.  They are entitled mother fuckers when it comes to softball.

The only thing that would have made the Reese IW hit better would for her to have yanked it over the left field fence, pimped the HR watch, slammed the bat and made Canady watch her run around the bases while we all celebrated!   Plus it would have been 3-1 and we'd all have about 15 extra minutes on our ticker lifetimes not having to go through the 7th inning as tight.😁

Other than the leadoff error, the 7th was not that stressful.  Not like Clemson (2-run HR to make it a one run game) or OU (2 runners got on base with 1 out)

Quick fly out on the 2nd pitch, runner doesn't advance

Strike out, runner has to go back to first due to umpire interference (whatever, weird call but the runner stayed put)

3 pitch foul out (batter was down 0-2)

About the only stressful part of the 7th was when TK was down 2-0 on German and she struck her out.

Well she was a whole hell of a lot closer than anybody else recently last night.   You want to watch strikeouts?  I prefer to have a HR possibility in her or Katie.

Conversation is all for nothing. Tech already locked her up for another million plus other expenses for next season anyway.

Not a surprise. She probably could have driven up the offer, but I'm sure Glasco promised more offense via the portal.  She also really pushed for a program willing to let her hit - Stanford would not.

I know the Love family also donated to football, but they seem to be huge softball fans. I don’t see why them paying a million for Canady would ruin football for OU.

Did a former player’s rich husband paying for Canady mean Tech football is suffering? What about whoever paid for Chavez to go to Ou?

Because average players in a big revenue sport (ie football) would want at least that amount and they would use her pay as leverage to get it. Everyone, including Canady, knows that the 1 million dollars was a one off. She will get paid, I assume by Tech, but I also would be shocked if it is a million dollars again....especially if it doesn't end in a National Championship.

Let me illustrate even easier for JS1: "You paid a softball player 1 million dollars, but you're telling me you can't pay a million dollars for my 5 star QB kid? Well ok."

Also I would not put it past some small-dicked Sooner donor who will be mad mean old Texas won the title and want to get Canady.  They are entitled mother fuckers when it comes to softball.

And we should be cheering for it to happen.

That being said it's apparently all for 'naught.

Wrong....the only thing that would have been better would be that we had won the first game and what happened last night would have given us a game 2 win to take the championship!

Oh My God...It is just a joke added to the end ...no need for a breakdown.   The whole point was I wish it was a HR just for the coolness factor.

It was stressful for me as soon as Goode botched the grounder.  One swing of the bat wins the game in walk-off fashion as we have seen with OU, oursleves and Tech(in non-HR fashion)

$1 million for a 5 star QB seems like a bargain

I think Tech was more likely to score on 3 consecutive errors than a walkoff HR.  They are a very poor power hitting team.

Our 2022 unseeded team hit more HRs than Tech has this year

I still like your idea for Pickens. Can we make that happen?

Or another angle is it’s the only major sport they can compete in?   Barrier of entry is low.  Pay 1 gal a million and you’re good.  In football you’re paying a lot more

I’m glad Glasco let her hit yesterday in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs
