Dude....how did this thread go all day without someone posting Raul Malo?  Dude was fucking amazing.  Our wedding playlist had a shitload of Mavericks in the rotation.

And...add him and the Mavericks to the list of artists who I never got to see live.  Got some real regrets about this one.  The other one of the same era who stings the same way is Hal Ketchum.  Can't tell you how many times my wife and I were somewhere and a Hal song came on and we'd sing to each other with a drink in our hand, or just playing some Hal songs around the house on a Sunday afternoon.  Both artists were kind of a soundtrack of our early marriage, some care-free years.

CSB Warning...

So in, I think 1999 I spent the summer working on a ranch in Granby, CO, and I and a bunch of the staff attended the best concert I've ever been to--Red Rocks Amphitheater, Mavericks opening, followed by Dwight Yoakam, and finally Willie as the closer.

One of the girls that was with us (also on staff) disappeared during the Yoakam set, coming back later to tell us that she had her own ride back to the ranch.  That ride wouldn't bring her back until about two weeks had passed, and she explained she'd been traveling on the Mavericks tour bus as a groupie/band aid.

Ughh..only 55. Knew this was coming, my wife liked her books.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2025/12/10/sophie-kinsella-dead-confessions-of-a-shopaholic-author/74013655007/

Sophie Kinsella, the USA TODAY bestselling English rom-com author of the "Shopaholic" series, has died. She was 55.

Kinsella's family announced her death in a post to Instagram Dec. 10: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy

…..

Kinsella announced in April 2024 that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer, at the end of 2022. She said she had undergone a "successful" surgery and continued to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the University College Hospital in London.

Heads up folks - next week I plan on starting the 2026 Celeb death pool thread. So put on your thinking caps, do your research to see who is still alive  and check wiki and other sources to see if they are really a celebrity, then narrow it down to 10 picks

I was lucky enough to see the Mavericks twice.  One was at the Livestock Show here in Austin and they were amazing even with those crappy acoustics and the joy they played with was so contagious.  They are on a regular rotation on my Spotify.

Also was fortunate enough to see Hal Ketchum at ACL long ago.  It was also at the Expo Center as a kickoff to ACL that season.  He played over an hour straight acoustic, no band, no nothing.  It was amazing how good that show was.  He opened for Robert Earl, if I recall.
