This is hilarious. The approach of this entire organization is horrible. This team has no power and only a few players actually take walks. They pair that with limited athleticism, so they aren't really a threat on the bases. They are essentially a station to station single team with a manger that refuses to prioritize advancing runners over letting AAAA hitters swing away.

Come on - Going into 2025, the team had 5 hitters in the lineup with career slugging averages 420 and over. League average slugging last year was 391. The construction of the team is not the problem. The problem is all of the players expected to slug have started horribly.

Last year this team was dead last in the majors in pitches seen per at-bat. This year the astros are just below league average in pitches seen. They had a problem and they tried to address it.

This team needs Yordan, Diaz and Walker to hit.

I mean if you see more pitches and still pick the wrong pitch to swing at is it really an amazing thing? Lol

There’s some truth to this. The real metric should be a combination of swinging at pitches in the zone and not swinging at pitches outside the zone. I would guess that’s being tracked somewhere but I haven’t had enough time to go find it.

Podcast could be summed up in a couple sentences that we did last night:

1) Your team can't be good if Pena and Meyers are your 2 best position players.

2) a plausible top 5 going into the season would have been:  Yordan, Altuve, Walker, Diaz and Framber.  They are undoubtedly in the top 7 or 8 going into the year.  They've combined so far for -0.2 war.  This team can't win with that being the case.

we need more exit hits, not exit velocity

Thank you Jeff Bagwell.

50 mph hit >>> 140 mph out

didn't the yankees fire a hitting coach that was overly focused on exit velocity ?

How does a front office scout for luck?

Players that hit the ball harder are almost always better hitters. Top 5 in avg EV this year: Ohtani, O Cruz, Judge, Gunnar and Alonso. The bottom 5 are a group of guys that I’ve never heard of. Interestingly, Altuve is 11th from the bottom in Avg EV this year.

This is almost 100% right.  Guys that hit the ball hard (if their strike out rates aren't terrible) are absolutely the best hitters.  Altuve at 11th from bottom in avg EV isn't a big deal- he's always been below average at that (as has Paredes).  You can succeed with low EV in a couple ways... don't strike out while spraying the ball a lot, or have a profile heavily stacked to fly balls to the pull side.  Fly balls to the pull side are HR's way more than any other type of balls hit- and they don't have to be hit all that hard.  Doubly so this is true at Daikan park.  Altuve his entire career has done both these things. Paredes his entire career has excelled at the second.  There are some other guys who can make a living without hitting the ball particularly hard- but it's threading a needle.

Yep.  Also, Bregman is smart so that's why (I'm sure) he didn't take Detroit's money even though it was the highest offer and went to Boston and Fenway to attempt to rebuild his value on the pillow deal.
Paredes has basically been an all star everywhere he's been except for 2.5 months in Wrigley.  Wrigley has that cutout down the left field line where it actually gets sort of deep down that line. That wasn't helping Paredes. That ballpark plays smaller to the alley's and CF than it does down the lines which is the opposite of what Paredes wants.

Also- if you want a super quick cheat code to what you should think of a pitcher beyond pounding the strike zone and swing and miss you should look at Pull side Fly Ball avoidance.

When you swing at bad pitches your exit velocity is going to suffer.

I only went back to April 17th, but we have only scored in the 1st inning twice since then.

Quickly becoming over it.

Now do the opposing teams.  Fuck.
