We do not have a 2.69 team ERA.

Big h/t to the Htown media goat Charlie Palillo for these stats that really are amazing:

In one-run games so far this year, the Astros are 17-7. For the entire 2024 season the Astros were 18-27 in one-run games. That's fuckin insane and inexplicable, but I will happily take it.

In extra innings the Astros are 5-1 so far. They were 6-10 in extras for 2024.

Also: in games where we have scored 3 runs or fewer, the Astros are 18-26, over .400 winning %. That sounds bad, right? It's actually amazingly good. Last year's record when they scored 3 runs or fewer: 12-55!!! For context, the Phillies are 11-22. The Cubs 10-22. Mets 10-21. The Dodgers and Yankees are both 8-22 in the same game scenario.

GOT DAYM!!

After team game 81, Hunter Brown leads the majors with a 1.74 ERA.  The team record for a season is Nolan's 1.69 in 149 innings in strike shortened 1981.

Is it just me or have people not caught on to Brown when discussing CY candidates, best starters in baseball, etc.

On that note, Brown and Framber have a combined 2.31 ERA thus far. In 2019 Verlander and Cole finished 1-2 in CYA voting with a combined 2.54 ERA.

Addition by subtraction of Montero and Pressly?

Charlies doing more research than when he was on the radio.  All that damn vacation time kept getting in the way of digging through stats.

While this seems amazing, it gives me concern. That stuff doesn’t usually play out that way over a full season. But maybe we have the secret sauce (great bullpen, buncha scrubs in the lineup that are too wet behind the ears to understand pressure).

Or maybe it’s our turn for 2016 Rangers luck (last time we didn’t win the division, sans Covid year) when they were a stupid 36-11 (.766) in 1 run games.  (Of course all that got them was the wrong side of a sweep in the LDS)

Hopefully more people catch on when he’s the AL ASG starter

I had the same concerns as well because usually those one-run games are a function of randomness/luck and that worm could easily turn on us, but hey let's just ride the wave while it's hot and hope it continues. There's also a good argument to be made that the team's record in these close games isn't just a coin flip because they are only two games ahead of their pythag W-L and two games ahead of their third order W-L record (which accounts for strength of schedule).

I think it's time to give credit to Wulaw and admit this is just a really damn good baseball team and poised to get better when our best power hitter returns.

If this keeps up, we'll be buyers at the deadline.  Who do we get?  A SP with some control to replace Valdez would be my guess/wish.

Edit:  MacKenzie Gore from the Nats?

I was just thinking about that name the other day.

Good question,  playing tennis for one, but not sure with whom since the passing of Ken Hoffman.

Doubt he is is going to El Campo to play with Small.

He still does some podcasting and writes a few articles.  Maybe after Ken's death, Charlie has decided to enjoy life.

I listen to Charlie's podcast but the other 2 guys...aren't good.  Especially the whiny one who constantly melts down over things like a guy's 11 AB sample with 2 outs and runners in scoring position.

He also writes a weekly-ish column that I usually don't remember to read.

I could listen to Charlie some,  he does get on tangents from time to time, but he knows baseball better than the collective idiots on Houston sports radio which really has gotten bad.

MacKenzie Gore is really good and I don't know why the Nats would trade him.  There's a better chance he's pitching on the next good Nationals team.

I think the only obvious weak spot that doesn't appear to have upside is at 2B.  Maybe someone like Brendan Donovan can be obtained fairly cheaply, I guess Brandon Lowe even if I don't like his contract and I expect the Rays will ask for prospects we'll regret trading.

I'm also okay with standing pat if our team health appears to be in a good place coming out of the ASB.

we're not making moves. our system can't handle any trades. tne market will be over priced

we need our walking wounded to get healthy.

tickets will be at a premium this weekend but get out there. two of the best teams in mlb going at it.

wait, i take that back ... we should move walker, rodgers, chas

You mean waive them?  You’d have to trade prospects out to move Walker’s salary and the others are basically neutral or worse on trade value.
