Too much.

Yep - The rumor is that the Diamondbacks are asking for a significant return for renting Suarez. That’s why several teams have pivoted away from him.

For those who don’t want to trade Matthews, what is the comparable player who has eliminated a similar whiff problem?

In the minors, he strikes out 30% of the time.

Marcus Semien may be a comp as he struck out around 30% of the time in his first 2 partial seasons with the White Sox. He eventually worked that rate into the teens.

Jeremy Pena started out with a 24% K rate and has reduced it annually to his 16% K rate this year.

Springer had a bad strikeout problem in the minors, but they kept him down while they worked on it and got it to an acceptable level.  He also has a lot more power and that makes it more tolerable.

Springer had a 27% K rate in the minors and started with a 33% rate in his first season in the majors. He had his K rate down to 24% in season 2.

getting javier back would be such a huge hit to this team. better than anyone we could trade for

Yep. Javier is a borderline 2, and Spaghetti was pitching the best on the team before he broke his hand. He’s at worst an above league average 3.

Javier was a #2 in 2022.  But in the other years and over course of his MLB career he has been more like a #4.  Im fine with him being the #4 SP but don’t want to count on him to jump right back in and be a Game 3 starter.

Lowe just hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 9th to take the lead on the Yankees. He's been mentioned as possibly Houston bound. Wouldn't want to give up too much, but he'd be a solid pickup

if the astros trade brice that means the analytics team gave a thumbs up

gilbert has a solid prospect

Relatedly, it's worth remembering that the prospect Dana Brown deemed mostly untouchable in trade negotiations last year was none other than Jacob Melton. It will be interesting to see who he's more willing to part ways with between Melton and Matthews.

What’s the price tag for Suarez? I’d guess Matthews + our top pitching prospect. It’d only worth it if we hang another banner.

The Astros actually have a top pitching prospect?

Aaron Judge had a 30%+ strikeout rate in his first three seasons and has averaged 27.8 over his 10 yr career. I understand the contact concerns with Matthews but his exit velos when he makes contact and his athleticism screams "hold" to me. And the fact that he was Dana's first draft pick in the organization makes me think he's not going anywhere.

the positional versatility is a plus

Doubt that matters this year. Hes your every day starter at third the rest of this season. At least he’s a decent glove. Has another year of control as well. Still an absolute snoozer. If this is it for the deadline, we can go ahead and fast forward to 2026
