How the fuck does he think we will be competing with *check notes* Kibble and a RS-SO Jackson Christian? IOL should be a priority. We would be absolutely retarded not to look for at the very minimum two IOL. I get they're not WR/RB tree-shaking and fall into your lap, but God damn, we cannot use Stroh, he's the worst OL ever (sorry Tristan, you've been overtaken), and as much as I like Kibble's upside, he's gotten no playing time, and I dint trust the eval on Christian.

I think it's OK to say that the ideal way you build your line is through high school kids.

But then point out that Texas must have dropped the ball with a few evals and took some light classes leaving the cupboard a little dry and thus we need to hit the portal some.

It's not like the coaching staff is doubling down on the size of the incoming high school OL class.  So they have to be keeping some spots warm for some portal prospects IMHO.

I would think (completely guessing with no example or stats to back this up) that it would be easier to find competent guards in the portal than competent tackles.  If our two tackles stay another year, you could get 2 starters and have 1 G/T type that could back up everyone and be thin, but OK with the kid that got hurt to start the season.  (I think)

Texas needs 2-3 linemen in the portal at minimum this offseason. Between poor evaluations and light classes the room is a disaster, especially on the interior. If Baker and Goosby come back we still need more depth at the position.

If everybody can see the team's deficiencies, then the staff can too. They're most likely addressing it behind the scenes, similarly to the high profile DE and DT that committed earlier, seemingly out of the blue.  It's their job.  And if they don't, then there are other concerns, beyond recruiting o-linemen.   The job isn't maintaining, it's improving, and no matter what, they have to get better than what currently suits up.  And for Sark, the same also applies to the coaching staff.  I imagine they're keeping everything under wraps, or that's my wishful thinking.

I admittedly laughed out load while reading this. Did you sleep through this last offseason?

No, they got it wrong and it was put on blast. How many times can Sark afford a mistake like that? It took a lot of bailing to get back to top 10 status and back in contention. If they do something similar, then they’re not the guys to deliver at Texas, and Sark will get run off. And he’s going to have a difficult time explaining these huge, repeated gaffs in his approach to taking the next step, for any future auditions.

I’m hoping they’re just remaining silent about potential prospects.

Isn’t there generally a pretty poor hit rate on OL out of the portal? Apparently it worked out ok for Ohio State, but is that normal? Or is the expectation that some guys who might not otherwise jump into the portal could be encouraged to do so if the right school were interested?

I'm guessing a few dozen of these guys could have started for us. Just looking at the top 10 rated transfer OL on 247, the results look pretty good from what I could find. Several of them are NFL prospects. Many current playoff contenders signed these guys, so we certainly shouldn't have been above doing the same when we roll shitshows out there like we did this year. This is not the position group to take chances with when you're replacing four starters.  They shouldn't have left any stones unturned.

High end starters (ie future draft picks) appear to be pretty rare, but competent ones are more easily found.  Competent would have been a huge improvement over what we trotted out for most of the season.

It has worked out for the most part for Oregon this season.  I think 3 of their OL starters are from the portal.

4/5ths of Ohio State's OL are homegrown guys. They took 2 in the portal last year. One is starting at RT, and the other was the dude from Rice who seems to be a bust.

I'm kinda sick of the 'it doesn't work 100% of the time so we'd better never try' mindset of OL portal recruiting our staff has.  The 995er mouthpieces are clearly regurgitating the feeling from the coaches, despite there being plenty of examples to the contrary.  Hell, it worked for us with Calvin Anderson and Parker Braun under Herman. We'd kill for a Parker Braun right now.

Oregon also has a blank check from it's 30x billionaire octogenarian sugar daddy. And we have a compliance department.

I think Sark has been depending on Flood to tell him whether or not we should pursue OL in the portal. The risk of taking duds may be outweighed by the reward of having a serviceable 8-deep, but that depends on what the room looks like. If it's full of dudes then why risk time and money pursuing options with a lower likelihood of success? But if the OL room looks like shit, then you gotta roll the dice and hope for the best. People say that taking DTs from the portal is a crapshoot similar to taking OL, but Sark has shown that he's willing to do that when the cupboard is bare.

I think one of the changes we'll see this off season is that Sark stops relying on Flood to evaluate the OL room.

I dont think Gerry is saying we shouldnt take any portal OL. I think hes just relaying what hes gathered about Flood over the years. Flood thinks bringing in portal players messes with the OL room. Im guessing its based on the development timelines he gives his guys. Gerry and Bobby have mentioned it several times in the past.

Of course, that seems like crazy talk after Flood's unit is the grenade that went off inside our season.

Burton put up an oddly aggressive post this morning on the OL. And the "aggressive" part was pointed towards the Texas fan base. He questioned why people are still discussing the OL's shortcomings, because there is nothing that can be done about it now. And called it "crying". I thought it was very strange.

I’m convinced that OL coaches are the biggest gossips on any staff (Joe Wickline excepted) and feed a lot of the team insider content to Burton and whoever.

Just read that post, he does seem kind of bitchish about it

I think yall are setting yourselves up to be massively disappointed regarding OL and the portal. Unless there is a coaching change I don’t expect us to be very active when it comes to the OL.

Well, then we've already lost.

This would be malpractice. We'd be counting on the guys not good enough to get on the field this year as starters next year. Like two out of Connor Stroh, Nate Kibble, and Jackson Christian would be starters.
