Booked this.  Looks like a nice chill town and this hotel was reasonable...

You are going to wish you pulled over sooner.  That drive around the horn to the Panhandle is a monotonous mofo with all the pine trees.  Pensacola might have been my choice.

There are two right answers, so your original post merits a grade of F.

1) Stop in Biloxi, grow a pair and gamble at one of the two decent casinos while telling your wife and kids to enjoy one of the restaurants within the premises.

2) Stop again in New Orleans and eat a nice dinner with your wife and kids.

The worst divorce fight I witnessed as a child happened in Pensacola. The only family vacation of my young life was to be at Disney World and Sea World for like 5 nights. Drive to Pensacola from Houston in a 4 door sedan. Stay at the La Quinta on I-10. Wake up and move on.

Well, there was no Internet back then and my parents couldn't handle maps and directions well. Got lost driving around Pensacola after 12 hours on the road. After an hour, finally found the La Quinta across the freeway. At the red light, summoning Clark Griswold, my father suddenly takes a right and we're back on I-10. Florida doesn't have crossovers, even to this day in many places, so we drove another 15 miles down and 15 back while my mother unleashed a hurricane of cusswords, threats and ancient curses in a manner in which I've never seen another human being express.

Don't stay in Pensacola.

HaHa- I remember a La Quinta on the bay at I-10 and Scenic Highway that might have been the culprit.

I drive pretty fast, and a couple years ago, average 71.5 mph (Including stops!!!) on a trip from Destin to Austin.  If I could only convince the entire world that the left last is THE FUCKING PASSING LANE, I could really fly...

I've done.  Been a long time but done it.  It will make me long for the stretch from Sweetwater to Fort Sumner, NM.

(kind of)

This may not be the worst idea.

How is Mississippi BBQ? https://www.taysbbq.com/moss-point-menu

Drove from UT to Fort Walton Beach in college.  Also from UT to Central FL to see spring baseball.   All I remember was that it was a dreadfully boring drive and you couldn't see squat from the highway.  Makes me long for a drive to NM, LOL.

I don't know about the quality of the BBQ, but, hell...I'd try it!  I kinda want some smoked wings now, dammit!

I'd rather do the Sweetwater to Ft Sumner drive. At least that vast barrenness is interesting, the Fl Panhandle is just hours of the same damn tree over and over again.

Emphasized for mental insanity-causing truth.  Worst stretch of any road trip I've ever taken is that stretch, at night.  All you can see is a narrow band of stars above, with the trees creating a narrow pinch point from either side.  Not even roadside signs or sites (they're all tucked back away from the highway.  It literally drives you insane.

Man, y'all can sell a road trip.

Yeah, its going to suck.  My fault.  I kind of suggested it.  Well, I suggested New Mexico again but my wife was like, "I need the beach" and Texas ain't going to do it.  So.  Yeah, there we are?  Why not the panhandle?  Family and such.

We're driving to Cali in June for Disney, San Diego, etc. Anyone have any tips for the return trip, preferable through I-10. We're pretty dialed in for getting out there, since we have hard ticket date to Disney, but we have some more flexibility on the way back. Any suggestions?

All I've got is Chuy's in Van Horn (and no, it's unrelated to the chain).  John Madden approved.

A sign reading "Chuy's Restaurant Mexican Food since 1959 John Madden Haul of Fame"

Made that stop in December of 2006 on the way to Ruidoso for my little girls to see snow for the first time.  After dinner at Chuy's we drove 10 miles out north of town so the girls could see what a starlit sky really looks like.
