SMU is essentially put together the core of the TAV Black team from the class of 24 that also had Spears and Suli Davis playing up. Suli has just committed to SMU, they already have Favor and Livings, adding Ames will just be another piece to that puzzle.

As for setting, maybe one day coaches will be more concerned with being able to set bad passes to still be able to run middles and an effective offense.  In the portal I would be looking for setters that set their middles to a high hitting % and cross check that with what passing rating that teams backrow had. IE if the team passed below a 2 but yet the middles still hit over .300 that tells me that setter is very skilled at getting the balls to the middle from anywhere on the court.  Maybe you give up some block but whats more important?

I'd really like to see better serving. I do not know where that comes from. I would also like to see another Sullivan on staff that can develop the middles and make them a priority in the offense. I don't think future national team coaches that stay on staff for 10+ years grow on trees, but I do not believe we have anyone on staff who makes the position the same kind of priority he did, and I believe it's affecting our roster, development, and match emphasis.

The stats from the Wisconsin game were posted. They had 50% first ball side outs in the first set. 52% FBSO in the second set. That's not a setting issue. We weren't even getting a chance to perform an attack.

Going on another serving error harangue, Wisconsin committed 10 serving errors to our 6. Wisconsin, along with Stanford, were one of the leaders in serving errors per set on the year at 2.9. But every one of those first ball side outs had the same effect on the outcome as serving the ball right into the net. So while we didn't commit as many serving errors, our serves were milquetoast that gave our side no opportunity to score during our serving rotation.

Our passing was dogshit. Including Halter. The only match that approached it in terms of poor performance was Stanford. Now, there's an argument to be made a great setter betters the ball even with bad passing, but that's not what was going on on the other side of the net. Wisconsin was regularly scoring on shitty second contacts because Colyer and Vajagic were fucking wizards with their roll shots. Again, not a setter issue.

Which is not to say there's not a setter issue. I admit Swindle is not some kind of be all end all. But to blame our ills on her is missing other really key flaws on this team.

I like to think it comes from more actual coaching of serving than I ever saw at the club level, but based on what we saw this year at Texas, I'm not optimistic. I was consistently blown away (at the club level) by how little effort was put into coaching such a massive component of volleyball success. During warmups for practice, they'd serve for x number of minutes, and I rarely saw a coach give any meaningful form tips or impart any knowledge about how or why we serve this way or that way etc. It all boiled down to a few minutes of relatively unsupervised serving at each practice, and then at tourneys, coach telling everyone "We gotta serve tougher". OK, that's cool Corch. Now how about you actually teach them how to do that effectively and give them some more specific instruction and direction than "serve tougher, but keep it in".

Watching our serving this year, it just seemed utterly static & predictable. Nothing seemed to change within a set, from set to set, or from match to match. Each server always seemed to serve their same serve over and over, too. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but imho our serving game is in desperate need of more variation. I thought it was quite telling in the Wisconsin match when Sheffield was interiewed mid-match and, oozing confidence, said something along the lines of "We got this. We've seen every serve they have, and we can pass 'em all". That's, uh, not good. And we just continued doing the same shit over and over with the same results. IIRC the only one who seemed to be able to put any consistent pressure on them was Nya, who kept putting it deep in the corner with some pace.

Blaming the setter is like blaming the pitcher, the QB and the PG. it’s just easier

Yeah anyone blaming the setters in the loss to Wisconsin was apparently watching something different from what I saw.

Come on Pitt…..do not ruin my Thursday.

Don’t rely on Dan Fisher in the semifinals. If he can’t beat aggy, he’s never winning a Final Four match

LMFAO. So they missed the call on the touch (there was no touch) and the out ball (it was in).

Did I wander into a Cowboy’s game thread?

How you gonna do Coach Kornacki like that?  But yeah, it seems deserved.

And yeah, as much fun as volleyball is to watch, I cannot watch aggy win.  I saw they took the first set and wasn't going to tune in unless Pitt took the second, so  . . . . .

I’m just resigned to the fact that A&M who won the whole thing. I just need one of you volleyball bros to tell me how that will impact UT.

Stop worrying about aggy. It just makes us lose like losers.  That team is experienced and senior laden. Good for them for taking advantage of the best team they’d have in a long long time

Eh. I guess.

I keep hearing 9 seniors.

imma assume they back to ass after this year ?

Seems like they're gonna have to take a step back.

But, as has been noted, Morrison is a good coach and an NC, or even a final appearance, is going to boost their recruiting.

Also, I have this little belief that aggyland being what it is, and volleyball, being the "girly girl" sport that it is, might not attract a lot of players.

Got to give credit where credit is due. They beat the prohibitive favorite then another #1 seed to get to the finals.

A few weeks ago, talk was that the Big10 was the strongest VB conference…I’d think KY is the favorite against Wisconsin….so now a possible all SEC final……but Wisconsin looking really good right now.

Id think aggy is pulling for Wisconsin…..not sure now.

As good as Aggy may have looked against Corn, and possibly tonight (didn't watch), I suspect Wisconsin looked pretty fucking good against us to a neutral observer.  They may be the two hottest teams.

They didn’t look good tonight. Just ok. It was even every set until 20. Then Pitt became ass and ags stayed ok. Being ok obviously got the job done

I felt like, the way Wisconsin played against us, they would have beaten whoever was on the other side of the net. They were on fire in pretty much every phase of the game.
