Roster retention thread of awesomeness- crowd source every schools most painful transfer portal losses

Was talking about this with a buddy the other day, and I kind of feel like Texas is the only school that has not had a single loss to the transfer portal of a guy that they were seriously intent on keeping or had plans for in the context of their team the next year.

I don't care that Xavier Alford went on to be an all conference player somewhere else.  Conversely, if Arch transferred and was a total and complete bust I don't care about that either.  Alford doesn't count and we didn't work really hard to keep him. Kudos to becoming a better player with more opportunity somewhere else. Arch would absolutely count b/c we would obviously want to keep him- it doesn't matter if he went somewhere else and busted.  Make sense?

Texas- can't think of a single player we lost that we had plans for an wanted to keep

Alabama- Downs, Bond, who else
Georgia- AD Mitchell, Carson Beck (I think- stockton seems like he sucks I don't think they wanted him over Beck but- maybe???)

Ohio State- Hero Kanu (he was absolutely planned for in their two deep going into this year- right)- I know they were pissed when they lost him.  Quinn Ewers?  Did tOSU want to keep him at the time? Try hard?

aggy- too many to list, probably, but then again most of them sucked.  Walter Nolen?  Who else have the lost that's good.

Oklahoma- Dillon Gabriel?  I guess maybe he doesn't count as they didn't try to retain him b/c ----> Jackson Arnold?  I guess he doesn't count either as they didn't try to retain him (probably).  Ooof their development of players has sucked- you hate to see it.  Who you got as OU's biggest transfer loss they wanted to keep?

LSU-

Michigan

Domers

USC-w

Oregon

Cal- Endies?

Pick any school you like.  If this trend continues of us never losing anyone we try to retain (it can't continue forever- right) and picking up guys from other schools that represent the best of their exPorts I like where our roster management will be, basically, forever.

I don't think we've lost any like I said.  Maybe I'm forgetting someone. I know we had a couple close calls.  Also- I wonder how many guys we ended up getting that were other schools major losses?

OU lost Nic Anderson.  I'm sure they would have wanted to keep him.  He went to LSU.

A&M surely didn't want Evan Stewart to leave.  LT Overton started most games for Alabama.  I'm sure there are more from that class alone.

OU lost a Heisman winner (among a lot of other guys they wanted to keep) when Riley bolted West.

Uh, yeah. This is why we need to crowd source.
Also- an interesting point- any coaching regime change is going to be where you probably see the most brutal action in the portal.  It's amazing the "talent" drain they've had at QB the last 5 years.

Don't know if these teams tried to keep them or just what their situation was but:

Quinshon Judkins OM>tOSU

Kadyn Proctor Iowa>Bama

Max Klare- Purdue>tOSU

I'm sure WSU wasn't thrilled to lose Mateer to OU

Clemson losing Andrew Mukuba to us

As far as Texas players going out, I agree that most were fairly replaceable, but I liked Justice Finkley and Kitan Crawford.

Losing Terrance Brooks hurt at the time. I thought he was slated to be one of the starters. With Jahdae moving to CB, however, there's no way Brooks would have started.

Not even sure what really happened to him. He transferred to Illinois, where he barely played. Now he's not even on their roster, and he never made a transfer portal announcement. Maybe JUCO?

On a separate note, OU lost Cayden Green last year, and then the fans review bombed his dad's business out of spite.

Aggy dipshits lost their best receiver from last year right? Noah?

Terrance Brooks sucked. Dude got burned deep repeatedly in the last spring game he played before transferring.

And I personally know Georgia fans who actually believed they were better off after Carson Beck got hurt lol. They overtly hated that motherfucker

Re: Brooks

CB Terrance Brooks no longer on Illinois football team

by Joey Wagner

Mar 11

Spoiler

CHAMPAIGN — Cornerback Terrance Brooks is no longer on the Illinois football team, head coach Bret Bielema announced on Tuesday. Third-year offensive lineman Magnus Moller also left the team last fall. Brooks spent one season in Champaign after transferring from Texas.

Brooks was a marquee transfer addition prior to last season but played just 158 defensive snaps and was behind Kaleb Patterson, Torrie Cox Jr., and Jaheim Clarke on the depth chart.
Brooks did not play the final five games last season and played just five snaps in the final six games of the year. He played in seven games for the Illini this season with five tackles. He did not start a game this season.
Brooks was a four-star transfer last offseason after leaving Texas and chose Illinois over a number of offers, which included Michigan and USC. He was the No. 105 overall transfer last cycle and No. 11 overall cornerback.

Bielema said on Tuesday: "He wasn't with us at the bowl game as well and didn't participate with that. I think Terrance is actually still in school and I've had some communication with his folks and him but he hasn't been with us since three or four days prior to the bowl game."

Stockton was pretty awful for them. It’s very like if we replaced Quinn Ewers with all his limitations with Heard or something like that.

Fun thread, kudos for starting it.

You can like Finkley and Crawford all you want, but they were not guys we tried to retain. They were flawed players who were never going to be anything here other than a teeener and a special teams demon.

in regards to the overall conversation, I think damn near every guy we’ve gotten was someone the other team wanted to retain. Ok, maybe not all of them. Norton and the other DT two years ago who sucked, but Norton ended up being a great pickup. Watson from Syracuse, Brevard, Endries, Matthew Golden, Isiah Bond, even Duke Catalon, all were viewed as big time gets to varying degrees as well as all the other folks mentioned.

Clearly I’m having a brain fart. What was the name of the shitty Arkansas safety transfer? Last name was certainly Catalon?

Beck was allowed to walk and I don’t think anyone at UGA was all that upset about it. He was in the same boat as Ewers in that he came back and then underperformed expectations and was politely shown the door.

Judkins wanted to leave for a contender

Mukuba wanted to play in a system that fit his style

I'm sure Klare wanted an upgrade and more exposure

Proctor I think was just money whipped. He was pretty meh early on, but if I remember correctly he got better. His flip-flopping was weird, but whatever

Mateer had nothing to lose. I'm sure he wanted to move to a program that could get him to the NFL.

You liked Crawford? He was terrible outside of being a gunner. Nice kid, I'm sure, but he's one of the worst safeties I've seen in a long, long time. He and Jerrin Thompson were...shitty at their positions.

Not sure we want to consider folks like:

Rourke Ohio>Indiana

If it's too early to consider

Mendoza Cal>Indiana

I acknowledge that its non-contender schools to a mid school so they might not be in alignment with the nature of this thread.

Per @MirrOlure above, on Beck, I really don't think Georgia was keen on keeping him. His numbers/issues with health, INTs and incomplete passes nearly mirrored Ewers. (Not hating) Had he returned there might have been a similar controversy Texas saw in the locker room or else where. I am of the position that Geogria told him to go shop.

I mean, was he?  So they could get Stockton as a starter?  I think you might be right but it doesn’t make any sense at all.

Ideally, and I think it would be fun- we could have like top 5 or whatever players from every school in America. So subpar to mid definitely fits in the spirit of this thread.
20 or so posts in my take is still that Texas has no names on the list. Some of this is really interesting in things like- oh Gabriel is a big loss right?  Oh, Oklahoma shoved him out the door?  If you weren’t plugged in your probably didn’t know that. If you are plugged in and saw Jackson Arnold sucking you might know it but not understand it- but there’s some subtleties that fans of the school might have more insight into than us.

Beck was so bad that by the end of the season the fans wanted him gone. Similar to how Texas booted Auburn, Beck single handily cost UGA games and it just would have been toxic if he came back.

Yeah- I assume everyone we signed the other team would have been happy to retain, I just wonder how many guys we got that would “top the list” from the other school.
off the top of my head I’d say arguments for:

Mitchell- Gerogia

Makuba- Clemson

Hero or Quinn- tOSU (I know they wanted to keep him/ I don’t know who else they’ve lost that they wanted to keep to the transfer portal)  I suspect they would have liked to keep Quinn but when the other guy hit maybe didn’t want to spend those resources?

Moore- UTSA

DT- Syracuse. He was a Freshman AA at the hardest sport to recruit- they damn sure wanted to keep him- but have they lost anyone worse?
Endies- Cal?  Don’t know who else they’ve lost  that might be more major but a projected second string AA has to be pretty high on the “ouch that hurt” scale.

Careful what you wish for I guess. I didn’t think Beck was good- it just seems ballsy to push a guy out when you have total and complete abject shit behind him.

Yeah. I’d love to know the actual OSU take on that one how hard (if?) they tried for retention. My sense was they were just loading up talent and figuring they’d have an open tryout and everyone who didn’t win could fuck right off and once Quinn reclassified and they liked their guy they didn’t care all that much about Quinn, but that’s me making assumptions and surmising not anything I know.
