Be patient and treat them with love. When they’re on their deathbed softly tell them what you did to their daughter.

Don’t forget to get drunk first.

There’s some built up tension over the last few years between my brother and I which would be a much longer post but he pissed me off and we exited my parents house abruptly this afternoon. After opening gifts he’s takes his dog outside and lets him run around the pool and in the dirt and then just lets him come in the house. I’m on the couch talking to my mom and the dog runs right over and jumps up on me. Mud and dog slobber all over my pants and shirt. I get up pretty annoyed but not angry kind of waiting for him to come in and apologize but he doesn’t give a shit. Not a word. Instead of starting an argument I just told my family it was time to go and we left.

My sister (no pics) is old enough  now she watches those crappy Hallmark Christmas movies.

I get along with my outlaws for the most part.
However we have come to a breaking point.
One of my BIL just put ketchup on a finely cooked brisket that I prepared.
I’m close to jumping across the table.

Get a fucking rope. Let’s ride.

Note: not a single mother fucker asked for any type of sauce or condiment for my brisket.

My sister is married to a guy who may be the most annoying person I've met in my life. He was always annoying but as he's gotten older has taken it to a new level. He's the type of person who can literally never stop talking, even if he knows nothing about a subject. Last night during the KC game statements included "KC is pretty good this year right?", "what seed will KC be in the playoffs?", "Mahomes isn't looking so good".

Currently he's somewhere north of 300 pounds as well. My sister brought a 24x12x6 tupperware full of home made chex mix. My wife and I had been snacking on it over the last few days but it was still 1/2 to 3/4 full. At 1pm I served a lunch with brisket, smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, mac and cheese, pinto beans and rice. At some point between 1pm and 9pm my BIL finished off the entire tupperware of chex mix.

Thanks a lot you fucking fat ass for eating what I looing forward to enjoying during football for the next week.

Did the Chex Mix have pretzels in it?  I hate the pretzels, and I would have left you a Tupperware with nothing but pretzels in it.

yes, and peanuts. You would have gotten a tupperware full of peanuts if I had done it.

It would have been stale by then. He did you a favor.

I was willing to take that chance

I have 5 BILs and 4 SILs. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have zero issues dealing with any of them.

/carry on with the bitchfest

Nothin a little woosty and a tick in the microwave couldn’t fix.

Lucky to be spending the Christmas break with one of my wife’s bridesmaids and her family. She’s hilarious, her husband’s a really nice guy, and the kids are playing well with mine even though they’re younger.

As a return gesture, I’ve made a few breakfasts and all of the dinners. They must not be good cooks, because the daughter has scarfed everything up and made multiple “this is the best …. I’ve ever had.”

Conservative Christian in-laws arrive tomorrow for three days.  Almost finished hiding all the liquor and anything drinking related.

Wife and I are in our mid 50's.

I have long advocated for ripping that band-aid off, but my wife would bear the brunt of the backlash, so I keep up the charade for her.  They are in their early 80's so their last trip to our house can't be that far down the road.

When my best man got married and I toasted the couple, I told of how I got to know a good portion of his family through his stories while we played poker and drank bottles of wine in Europe, where we were roommates for a while.

I wondered what was up when he buried his face in his hands during the toast. Seems his in-laws did not know he drank (not a lot -- was a minister for the first half of his career). Afterwards he explained to me that he even had to hide his cooking sherry when his future in-laws came to visit before the marriage. But it turns out Berry, the FIL, thought the toast was hilarious, and Berry came up and pumped my hand afterward telling me so.

Seems that after 30 years, ol' Berry still asks about me and I am welcome at their farm any time. And my buddy and his wife didn't have to hide their alcohol any more.

Too late to edit my post, but to bring this back to the topic, I suspect religion has dampened our holidays quite a bit this year. Daughter didn't really even take part (not even doing gifts for anyone), and I'm wondering whether it's because she's got a newfound and I suspect not fully committed faith based primarily on getting her former boyfriend back. His family goes to our local evangelical and apparently fundamentalist super-church, and she's still attending despite the breakup and despite honoring my wife's wishes to continue attending Catholic services at the same time.

Daughter is a senior in high school and of course on the cusp of leaving for college, so she's already been in that morose, rebellious teenaged stage that I keep wanting to point out includes way more disrespect than the commandments allow. Hard to talk to her most of the time, and her disappointing lack of enthusiasm on Christmas seemed based on judgmental and conservative disdain for merrymaking. She made it pretty easy for us to continue deemphasizing all the consumptive ritual and stressful preparations for tradition's sake. Because we stretch the holidays out with a flexible schedule, we may still do a few gifts and I'm close to getting her a book about faith written by Jim Palmer, a former megachurch pastor himself who writes to help people deprogram themselves from fundamentalism.

I’m still working my way through aman Cara by former father John o’donohue, in starts and fits. Might be another title to look into.

Hadn't heard of that one, but I'll check it out -- looks like they released a 25th anniversary edition three years ago. The friendship stuff looks especially interesting. Our daughter has turned her back on a couple of longtime friendships this year as well, and I'm wondering if that's because her friends tried to talk sense to her about the young man (who's really a great kid, but I suspect a lot of what makes him so is extreme politeness, cheerfulness, optimism and whatnot that strike me as being a major part of his Christian upbringing). Bottom line is they're still just kids and neither one likely has lived enough yet to figure out what their beliefs mean, especially in a period of national turmoil when religion is central to the struggles.

I've encouraged my daughter to hash things out with her friends, but she's stubborn. In fact, I told her just yesterday, during one of her stints of calmness, that the New Year is always a great time to reconsider and reconcile. She did at least listen and respond with a tiny bit of thoughtfulness, so it was a good enough holiday moment.
