No. 24 North Texas (11-1) at No. 20 Tulane (10-2), Fri., 8 p.m., ABC

This is a true Playoff elimination game in the American championship, with the winner earning one of the automatic qualifying bids. Both teams have already had their head coaches hired away — North Texas’s Eric Morris is headed to Oklahoma State and Tulane’s Jon Sumrall to Florida — but both will coach in this game and through the CFP, should they make it. The Mean Green are second in the FBS at 7.4 yards per play, led by quarterback Drew Mestemaker’s FBS-best 3,835 passing yards. North Texas can claim its first conference title since winning the Sun Belt in 2004. Tulane, which has power-conference wins over Northwestern and Duke this season, won the American crown in 2022.

Line: North Texas -2.5

Yep. That this game has playoff implications is a joke

That’s what you get with the playoff. Wait ‘til they expand it to 16 teams and then 24 teams. It will get worse. And it was totally predictable when they instituted the 4 team playoff.

But it will open the door for undeserving 3- and 4-loss major conference teams to make the dance so it will be enthusiastically supported.

True story from like two decades ago, I went out to Frye Street with some buds on Friday night for Halloween.  We met some other guys at the bar who were cool and drank with them for a few hours.  Around midnight, they decided they needed to go, and we had the normal night-is-young protests.  To which one replied, "We have a game tomorrow."
"Oh, y'all are going to the North Texas game?"
"No we play for them."
...I'm pretty sure they lost because they were terrible back then.

The Texas sports information department should be going full villain and tweeting clips of this subpar game simply noting that this is more proof that the relative importance of W/L record versus schedule played is completely misunderstood by the committee. Flat out say that neither Tulane nor North Texas have any business in a Top 25 ranking because they don't. At best these teams are in the #40 range.

Tulane getting to be the home team with 1 more loss than UNT because of being ranked higher in the polls might be the shittiest conference rule in all of college football.

Maybe find the ball, #80.

Returner couldn't warn him because the Tulane gunner illegally knocked him out of the play
