I think Tulane got one of the local voodoo witches to do some of that voodoo shit on UNT.  No team can possibly have this much go wrong in a single game without catching a single break.

The penalty for fumbling out of the endzone vs any part of the sideline is too punitive. If that was a smarter rule, those guys probably don’t call it that way.

The NFL has a proposed rule to change it.  20-yard line, I believe.

Announcers were awkwardly quiet coming out of the break.

Think they got a talking-to about their criticism of the officiating

Yes. Their producer certainly gave them a hint.

Why? The endzone is the defense's territory, it's not part of the field. It makes perfect sense for the ball to revert to the defense.

Most of the complaints about this rule come from fans of the team on offense that are infuriated when it happens to them and can't think clearly about the reasoning behind it. It's the same logic used in rugby.

As in you keep the ball but move back the 20?

Yes.  I don't think it has any wheels right now, but it exists.  Maybe in 5 years when it affects the AFC Championship or some other big game.

Fuck that.

There is nothing wrong with the current rule.  A team should not be rewarded and given the ball back for fumbling it out the endzone.

I’ve never had my team’s result changed bc of this. It’s just crazy in my opinion. For example, let’s say Wingo breaks a screen for 97 yards but gets hit and the ball goes out at the 1. Texas ball at the 1. But if it goes out beyond the cone it completely flips the field?

Yes. That’s how the boundary works. I’m good with it.

I understand how the boundary works. I’m saying it’s too punitive

don't fumble the ball through the endzone.  the rule doesn't need to change.  Wingo got lucky in your example. sometimes thems the breaks.

Tulane got smoked by both Ole MIss and UTSA. And their best win was against who? A 6 point win over 8-4 Memphis? Playoff bound!

It's a joke.

It's a good rule that isn't understood by fans, just like the dropped third strike rule in baseball. Both of those rules keep the rules consistent.

For the touchback situation, the goal line/end zone is a special area of the field. The consequence for the ball going through/into that area and becoming a dead ball depend on which team was responsible for that action (i.e., which end zone it is). If it's the other team's end zone then it's a touchback. Doesn't matter where they last possessed it, the rule is consistent. If it's their own end zone then it's a safety. Also doesn't matter where they last possessed it.

Great question… I’ll have to think about that.

Turnovers are punitive.  Don't fucking fumble.
