Is anyone playing ancestor roulette for Christmas?

Both my wife and her brother are adopted. My BIL’s daughter did the 23 and me and found a match outside if her known family. My BIL connected with his long lost half brother shortly thereafter. My wife sent in her sample today. I think she’s pretty nervous about it, understandably.

I think it's mainly people that were separated from their blood relatives that are into it. I'm sure they have a number of reasons to track down relatives they've never known. Personally, I don't get it but I know everyone in my family.

This.  I have all the family I want and have no interest at all in finding a cousin in Iowa, much less getting in communication with him, much much less building a relationship with him.  But, I know many folks that came from broken families, were adopted, had adopted parents, etc. or just had a f'd up family.  They seem to be the ones that need more family.  I get it.

And t-shirt printers. They gotta eat. T-shirt man's either gonna get your money because you pay him to print reunion shirts, or he's gonna get it by crawling through your window. Your choice.

We held a Diablo fambly reunion for about 40 years and nary ONCE did the subject of t-shirts come up. We was poor.

Recently got my results back.  I've read and seen enough to basically ignore "shocking" ancestry "news" that may arise from the tests.  My wasn't shocking at all 99.8% Norther Europe, which is what I expected.

What was interesting is the 12.5% match with a total stranger.  Turns out I have a cousin out here I didn't know about.  So either, I have an aunt or uncle I don't know about or one of my aunts or uncles had a kid I don't know about.

I'm not really worried about big government conspiracy thing.  I figure they already have my DNA anyway.

On the insurance side, I figure it swings both ways, I found out I DON'T have a bunch of genes for genetic diseases/cancers.  I plan to use this information to ensure that I'm placed in the lowest-risk category if I go to buy more insurance. (I liken this to those promotions that say if you can run an 8 min mile you can get cheaper insurance)

Shauna Harrison knows that every morning she could wake up to learn she has a new sibling.

In the past two years, she has already gone from living her life as an only child to discovering through a DNA testing service that she is one of 30 people that share the same biological father.

The company plans to air a new advertisement this week in San Francisco that features Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in 2002 and held captive for nine months before being rescued.

In the ad, Ed Smart makes a plea for people to share their DNA so they can help families who have lost a child. “When a loved one is a victim of a violent crime families want answers,” he says as the ad shows footage of a child’s shoe on a playground, crime scene tape, and parents embracing. “There is more DNA available at crime scenes than any other evidence. If you are one of the millions of people who have taken a DNA test your help can provide the missing link.”

How does random people providing DNA help solve a case like Elizabeth Smart’s?

I gather the idea is that if a certain percentage of the public voluntarily share their dna with police, they can match some crime scenes to relatives of the criminal.  Whether it would have helped Elizabeth smart is probably not the point he is making.

Now I think it’s a horrible idea. Yes it could most likely help some people but we’re also protected against unlawful seizures.

Big brother is going to DNA test all babies (sooner or later) and sell it protection, insurance, and good for your family.

Call me naive, but I'm gonna say that'll never happen in the US.

China? Definitely.

Europe? Probably

How do you know it’s not already happening in the US? How do you know your DNA hasn’t already been mapped from your last blood test?

I know a family that owns an Italian restaurant..Father came from Italy.. the daughter took a test to to see how Italian she was.. 0%. Oops.

My dad is part of the 0% also...... BIL gave him a kit (not sure which one, but dont believe it matters) and he just got around to getting it done. Talked with him the other day and he said, "No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam" as in it came back with 0% of anything. No CR, but I guess I am a true alien (outer space) or at least a descendant of one.

I think they are sending him another kit to take it again.

Wasn't the state of Texas holding onto all umbillical cord samples with or without the parents consent up until a few years ago?

Not so far fetched, it's old news even

My brother decided to be that relative who gifts these for Christmas.  He gave my dad and I each a kit, but didn't take one himself.  My folks are divorced in large part to my mom stepping out, and my brother takes more after mom's side of the family, so I suspect he has a fear of learning something he doesn't want to know (to be fair, I'm fairly certain he's my dad's kid - my mom's shit didn't start until we were quite a bit older).

Didn't learn anything too shocking.  I had everything my dad had, in about half the quantity (he's mostly German, but there were surprising levels of British/Irish and Italian that no one was aware of - all director ancestors came over from Germany, so there had to be some mixing going on in Europe).  On my mom's side, we knew that her grandparents were born in Germany, Poland, and Serbia, but they all claimed mostly German heritage - which seemed strange.  Turns out we have a lot of Polish and Balkan DNA, which makes complete sense to me.

I'm also less than 1% Sub Saharan African.  So I'm basically Elizabeth Warren black.

Could indicate he ain’t her dad or that his family moved to Italy from somewhere else and their line of ancestors married within similar families.  DNA can’t tell you the dirt your ancestors walked.

but not her biological dad, or they lied about Italy is more probable.  Or maybe these tests have a higher error rate than they admit.

That is naive.  Modern eugenics is largely an American invention.  Hitler was inspired by California law.  Our shit stinks too.  And it would still stink had we not witnessed Hitler's full blown diarrhea that caused us to change our tune.

We are more likely to face negative consequences prior to China or Europe. That also has a lot to do with us happily escorting the whole camel into our tent while Europe and China try to keep his nose out. 21st century Americans have a tendency to jump wholeheartedly into things without first considering possible negative ramifications. Our social media experience should be telling. If corporations have our information, and they figure out how to weaponize our information for profit, they will weaponize our information.

At this point, lack of information is information that can be "weaponized".

I should have finished the story.. Momma came clean, was boning some other dude then had her Italian husband raise the kid without anyone knowing but her..
