Not intending to make a judgement.

Just highlighting that people would lose their shit over this movie today.

People would lose their shit over a lot of movies that came out of the 60's and 70's -- Bond doesn't have that market cornered by any stretch. This was the MAD MEN era for fuck's sake.

With the Moneymaker effect, they had to know that a lot of their target audience probably plays poker.  It was nice how the hands were also shown in the same order you listed them.  That's convenient, but not very realistic either.  This is probably how science guys react to movies with science in them.  There are a lot more of those movies out there, so I guess we should just let it go.  Still, it seemed so out of place in a Daniel Craig Bond movie.  It would have fit perfectly in a Roger Moore Bond film though.

Of all the outlandish bananas shit that happens in Bond movies, this is what almost ruins it for you? At least you don't have to completely ignore every known law of physics for that sequence to occur! This is a franchise that brought us the parkour scene in CASINO ROYALE, Bond hopscotching on crocodile heads in LIVE AND LET DIE, a flying AMC Matador in GOLDEN GUN, Bond uses a cello case and violin as a bobsled in LIVING DAYLIGHTS, para-sailing on a massive ice wave and an invisible car in DIE ANOTHER DAY and Bond being attracted to Grace Slick in VIEW TO A KILL. :D

I can't help but notice the last 2 or 3 Pierce Brosnan movies aren't even mentioned.

Die Another Day.

Sheeeeeit.

Golden Eye is one of my favorite Bond movies.  Man, Brosnan started out great and it went to shit after that.

GOLDENEYE is great and Brosnan was a great Bond. (Check out his work in THE TAILOR OF PANAMA and THE MATADOR. It wasn't Brosnan that was the problem with "his" Bond movies. Damn near destroyed the franchise with shitty scripts, shitty villains and even dumber action sequences.)

FRWL is a great one, just edging out Dr. No for me.  I like Goldfinger, but can't get past Kentucky as a Bond destination (yes, I get that's where Ft. Knox is).

Casino Royale is my favorite with SkyFall behind it.

My favorite Roger Moore one is For Your Eyes Only.  Spy Who Loved Me has not aged well IMO.

I saw the Brosnan movies when they came out and can't even watch them anymore.

Moonraker is the worst of the lot.  Diamonds is the worst Connery Bond film.

I have a top to bottom list somewhere that I made the last time the subject came up.

MOONRAKER Is campy as fuck but it was the 70's -- all of Moore's entries, save maybe FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (made in the 80's) were much campier than the 60's-cool Connery flicks. Anyway, there are parts of MOONRAKER that I love and Dr Goodhead is drop-dead gorgeous.

One of the better Bond girls.

In a highly competitive field.

Incidentally, this is one of the rare Bond movies that almost perfectly follows the book's plot. If anything, Klebb's lesbianism is downplayed in the film, as is the sexual assault scene.

It's also worth mentioning that contemporary critics found the film equally scandalous:

  • "...The film is highly immoral in every imaginable way; it is neither uplifting, instructive nor life-enhancing...." --Richard Roud of The Guardian
  • The Times' critic wrote that Bond is "...conventional in every particular ... except in morality."

And other critics followed in a similar vein, that the story was totally immoral and tongue-in-cheek.

It's also worth adding that the film could easily be made today, because Bond films aren't an American franchise. European studios don't have to hold themselves to Hollywood's limitations.

Never Say Never Again is my favorite follower by Casino.

kim Bassinger her prime...

NSNA is just a non-Broccoli remake of Thunderball anyhow. But yes. Peak Kim Basinger. :D

Dalton was probably the best actor of the bunch. But he was handed some of the worst scripts and movies of the lot. Not his fault.

Brosnan should've gotten the role when he was young enough to make it work. Then, his decision to turn a cold-blooded amoral killer into a tear-eyed romantic might've gotten a pass from me. To say nothing of that act ending up pissing all over Tracy's grave.

Lazenby is criminally underrated, due to the unfortunate circumstance of having to follow Sean Connery. And of course Diana Rigg's Tracy is by definition the best Bond girl by far.

Yup, could not suspend disbelief on Grace Jones.

I will try again with Moonraker.  Maybe it will move up past License to Kill.

I liked Lazenby and, of course, Diana Rigg.

But Eva Green was pretty compelling in Casino.

Yup, could not suspend disbelief on Grace Jones.

I had a friend who was terribly enamored with Grace Jones back then.

He came out of the closet soon afterwards. Was already out to some of us by then.

And now he's dead. Well.

For the record, while I hit puberty seeing Slave Leia in Return of the Jedi, Carole Bouquet pretty much defined the kind of girl I'd fall for ever since.

As someone mentioned earlier, most people tend to like the ones that they started/grew up with.  My favorite movie is "The Spy Who Loved Me", and my favorite opening song is Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only".  Hottest Bond Girl for me has to be Ursula Andress.

The hottest bond girl is Barbara Bach.

I don't know how that would even be a question.

Dr. No

Second that.  Solid flick.  No gadgets.  Bond as a detective.  Great girl, great location, great villain.   My favorite Bond film for a long time until only recently.

Dr. No

30 mins into FRWL - I'll do Dr. No next. Guess I'll do the first 3 in reverse order.

Side note - WHY did they ditch the guitar line on the theme song in Goldfinger? I felt like it was missing throughout the entire film.

Outside of the gun-barrel sequence that starts the film, there is very little use of the famous James Bond theme as an independent piece of music in Goldfinger. (In fact, besides this opening sequence, the guitar riff doesn’t appear in the film at all.) Rather, as noted earlier, Barry incorporates parts of it into the main theme, thus cleverly allowing himself to draw on Bond’s music in cues supported by the Goldfinger theme:

Seems like they wanted a lot of continuity with the Goldfinger theme.

It's funny how there was so much crossover from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bond films.

And yet somehow Dick Van Dyke never had the opportunity to play Bond.  Tragic loss since he had the accent down perfect.

About to fire another one up.

GoldenEye, FRWL, or Dr. No?

First reply and I'll watch it. Not sure if I've seen any of them all the way through.

Live and Let Die of course.  Someone else needs to watch that POS and give me there opinion.  The only opinions I'm getting are 40 year old memories.

diamonds are forever.  such a great book, such a steaming pile of diarrhea of a movie.

Yeah RPM brought that up earlier. “Unwatchable piece of shit” is probably a bit harsh for LALD. Extremely disappointing debut for Moore that had very little action is a better description of LALD.

Has anyone watched that documentary on George Lazenby called Becoming Bond?   It's a must for Bond fanboys.  I'm still not sure I've seen his one Bond movie.  It's kind of like Diamonds are Forever.  I think I half ass watched in 25 years ago and don't really remember much about them.

OHMSS is one of my absolute favorite Bond movies.  It's top 5 for me.  Lazenby is panned for being somewhat rigid, but I think the guy captured the Bond aura from the books quite well.  His fight scenes are amongst the best in the franchise history.  it's absolutely worth the watch.
