  • COVID-19 vaccine discussion

    Texas Jeff

I thought it might be helpful to have a separate topic related to the vaccine.  If this is too much duplication, mods please delete this thread.  I thought it would be good to talk about who can get the vaccine, where they can get it, what side effects people are seeing, and in general what is going on with distribution.

The CDC has published vaccine distribution guidelines, and if you care, they are worth reading.  They are dividing the timeline into:

    • Phase 1 - Potentially limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses available
    • Phase 2 - Large number of vaccine doses available
    • Phase 3 - Sufficient supply of vaccine doses for entire population

Who you are will determine if you are eligible for a vaccine in the various phases.

    Phase 1 is divided into a Phase 1a and a Phase 1b:

    • Phase 1a - Mostly healthcare workers
    • Phase 1b - Other essential workers, people with higher risks, people over 65

If you are eligible to get the vaccine and they have in in stock and you want to get it, it is important to go get it.  Both of the first two vaccines can spoil, so if a dose is sitting there and you aren't there to get it, they might have to throw it away.

Both vaccines require two shots.  It is important to go get that second shot.

Who fits in phase 1b and who has to wait until phase 2 might be a sticking point.  The "people in higher risks" category includes a lot of folks, maybe more than you would think might be in that category.  Hopefully we can quickly get to phase 2 so that we don't spend too long arguing about who is or is not in Phase 1b.

Anyway, I'm interested in everyone's experience with the vaccine and especially getting the word out for those that can go get it, so that every dose ends up in an arm rather than in the trash.

Nobody has hassled me about wearing a mask; it’s just that it’s increasingly more common for me to be the only one masked, and it feels funny to be the non-conformist.

Get on the hyperbole train man. It was completely the best way to get through Covid. Except for the paths of destruction it caused on both sides of the issue.

I’ve worn a mask alone in a car, when going from one place where I would be wearing a mask to another. Why go through the hassle of taking it off and putting it back on? It’s just not that big of a deal.

When walking in Vegas through casinos and then back outside I would just leave mine on. My wife would put it on through the casino then take off once outside then back on then back off. I don’t get it. It’s not super oppressive to have a cloth mask resting on your face.

Lol in Brisket’s world of imagined persecution and animosity, people walking down the street masked are pelted with rotten fruit by people hanging out of the windows of moving vehicles.

If you feel you need to wear a mask ok. It doesn’t affect me. I do laugh internally at the people who still wear them in a restaurant and then politely sit down and take them off.

Just flew yesterday and mask tolerance is dropping quickly at airports. Can’t wait for that to be abolished.

Haha was figuring someone would say something like this. Obv taking it on and off isn’t some huge issue but neither is leaving it on. It would be like if for some reason you had to wear a baseball cap at stores or indoors. You could keep taking it on and off or just leave it on. It’s not some huge pain to take it on and off but why would you bother?

Today is the 2-year anniversary of "When COVID got real."

    3/11/20:

WHO officially labels COVID as a global pandemic. Stock market crashes 10%. Oil plunges to $35.

Rudy Gobert positive test announced mid-game. NBA pauses rest of season.

Trump announces ban on travel from Europe.

    Houston Rodeo canceled.

I flew to NOLA on the 13th for a long-planned bachelor party with a bunch of friends. About 4 or 5 guys dropped out either the night before or the morning of. Police started clearing Bourbon Street around midnight that Saturday. We went to the airport on Sunday not knowing if we'd actually be able to fly home. First time I can recall seeing an Uber driver wearing a mask. Monday at work, boss told everyone to take their laptops home b/c we might not be allowed back in the building.

    Strange fucking times.

I was home with the flu (caught from my son over his spring break).  I sat here and read Surly and learned of the impending doom.  The next week, I got our boss reluctantly to get us ready to work from home, which we did 4 days later.  Somewhere, there's a picture of me holding a laptop wearing nitrile gloves, mostly to keep all the hand sanitizer from drying out my hands (and from keeping all the covid on the laptops from killing me.  Good times.

Yeah these mRNA vaccines were quick and have saved a lot of lives but people aren't going to want to keep getting shots. I wonder how far away we are from the second generation vaccines coming out.

Had our first family restaurant eating inside outing since February of 2020. I’ve had many myself, but first time wife has been. Wife finally just left mask off after taking a few drinks of her water. She’s now on the countdown to Thursday to see if she gets covid. Will get all kinds of “the look” and tone if she wins the covid lottery. And she may never leave the house again.

I get a flu shot every year, and it's much more unreliable in terms of effectiveness most years. I'll get a COVID shot every year.

This.  That seems to be the natural evolution.

We have long had a serious, potentially fatal, respiratory virus circulating, with some annual variation as to strain: the flu.  And they formulate and offer a vaccine for it every year.

Now there's another similar disease, COVID.  And I think there's a good chance we'll end up treating it the same way -- I'll swing by HEB and get my annual flu shot and annual COVID shot.  Every now and then, they'll miss the target on the variant, and the shot will not be very effective.  But most years, it will do the job and do a decent job of preventing the illness and/or making the illness much less severe if you get it.

I continue to not see why there's still a big freakout about vaccines here.

I'm nowhere near ready to get a fourth shot.  However, if I can help it...I will get flu shot early like I always do (sometime in October).  And I will get get Covid shot 6 months later.  Because my second shot and booster knocked me on my ass for about 36 hours (second shot in particular).  And I would be doing it right about now on a Thursday or Friday with the excuse that if I feel bad, I'll have the weekend to recover.  But really just an elaborate ruse to be home for the best two days in sports, opening rounds of March Madness.  Obviously I'll get some puzzled looks from the wife about why, if I feel so bad, am I drinking beer.  But we'll say it was suggested by the pharmacist.

I think only 40% in the US got a booster. Only 35% in my county got the 2nd shot, much less a booster.

My wife and I got vaxxed last March, then caught delta in November.  We went to FL on vacation in late January.  I got boosted two weeks before hand, but my wife swore off any additional vaccines/boosters since she caught covid anyway.

Guess which one of us spent two days of their first vacation in two years in bed with symptoms of omicron?  Hint: It wasn’t the one who was smart enough to get a booster.

My gloating was short lived, however.   With her out of action, I had to take the kids to fucking Disney solo.  By day 3 I was ready to start licking public toilet seats to become bedridden and thus have a relaxing vacation.

Even when it’s defeated, pussy is undefeated.

Such a strange criticism especially when we literally already have a shot that we get every year.

I never have any side effect from a flu shot.  The 2nd and 3rd COVID shot made me feel pretty shitty for a few days.  I would need to see evidence of actual benefit before I consider a 4th.  Plenty of boosted people got Omicron.   And I haven't seen much evidence protection against severe disease wanes in my age group (40's) for 2X dose much less 3X.   So maybe elderly or immunocompromised might benefit from a 4th but for the vast majority a 4th shot for an old strain seems like overkill.  Not only that, without showing a clear and convincing benefit, Pfizer and the Govt are going to continue to lose all credibility.  Much better to focus messaging on potential 4th shots for elderly while message for most younger/healthy people we will have an updated booster incorporating Delta/Omicron available before the end of the year (I mean I have no idea why they couldn't).

Agree with your last sentence.  Pfizer is developing an Omicron-targeted vaccine.  I expect THAT formulation would be the upcoming "booster."  And, going forward, COVID vaccines would be like annual flu vaccines: tailored to the dominant strain/variant in a given year.  No, none of that is a "done deal" yet because we're just 2 years in to this thing.  But that's the rational path.

I expect that any 4th "booster" in the interim would be for the particularly vulnerable.

Maybe that or maybe it’s that people not wearing masks where required are violating the rules but people wearing them are not? I yell at people for running red lights but not for stopping at them.

Also maybe bc wearing a mask affects no one else whereas not wearing a mask does increase the risk to others to some extent.

    JFC.

Ok for one I never said I was “down with screaming” I was pointing out multiple reasons why someone upset with someone not wearing a mask is much more reasonable than someone upset bc someone is wearing a mask.

For two, someone camping in public bc they are homeless is 99.9% likely the victim of some horrific circumstances (yes sometimes their own poor choices) and is much more deserving of kindness and sympathy than some oppositional defiance disorder addled toddler freedumb warrior.

I think screaming and berating is not useful or something to aspire to in any circumstance. It is completely 100% reasonable to firmly and politely request someone put on a mask where it is required, since people may be there based on those restrictions. It is unreasonable ever to ask someone to remove a mask or to ask someone to put one on where it isn’t required.

My wife's brother won't let my wife come see their new baby because my wife has been vaccinated, and her hair and sweat will emit spike proteins and hurt the baby.

    He's done his research.

    He's also a nursing student.

My wife is pretty upset, understandably.  We don't know how to talk to him when he won't listen.
