Champions League 2021 - 2022

Messi has never had a good average (compared to other top scorers) when taking PKs. The play-by-play guy was so ready to go down on Messi and I was thinking "He's actually not that great at PKs.", but didn't post it.

Was a stupid challenge by Carvajal on a ball that was already going out of bounds, so maybe the gods thought that putting Messi at the spot would make up for the ball going out.

I don't get the "it's not fair" argument.  Logically makes sense and everyone knows the rules going in.  Prefer it as a first tiebreaker to ET and PKs.

•you lose at home 2-1

•you're down by one goal

•second leg you score first to go up 1-0

tied up, right? nope, you're still down by one goal. you still need to score again to win. that's dumb.

Going into the second leg, you know you're down two away goals and need that many to advance.  If you don't know that, then you're dumb.

Scoring and winning on the road is more difficult than scoring and winning at home.  Seems reasonable to reward that.

but it doesn't seem reasonable to call it a draw when both teams score the same amount of goals?

Sure, in a season series who really cares.  In two games where on team is advancing you have to come up with a method to differentiate.

Pretty sure a game that goes to PKs, ends in a tie and that's the method to determine who advances.

When you have ET/PKs involved, you often see a lesser team park the bus, playing to get to PKs as the game goes on.  When you have away goals, there is an incentive for the away team to press for a goal, unlike what you saw RM do today.

All methods have their plusses and minuses, but the away goal makes sense to me.
