Yes, dumbass, I used hyperbole to emphasize the following point: is such a dangerous cession of privacy justified by the threat to society posed by the existence of child porn?

How many unknown devotees of child porn are out there right now? It would seem to me not that many -- I imagine most of not all over 35 years of age have been busted already, becase those of that age group to have been too ignorant of how the Internet works and the various legal online snares designed to catch them. At least in Texas, once you are caught with kiddy porn, you are on the sex offender registry, and are thereby under supervision or perhaps even banned from the Internet. I am sure there are dodges around this, and i suspect there always will be, but short of putting these people behind bars for life on their first offense, I don't know if we should hand over that much access to Apple for a threat like this. It's too ripe for mission creep and abuse by hackers.

Like, say your ex got her little hacker nephew to fill your cloud with child porn. Or maybe some just ends up in there by mistake...Through a glitch, some of my photos are geotagged exactly 180 degrees around the world from where they were taken, because the cloud simply fucked up and put pics taken in Colorado in Tibet or Uttar Pradesh or some shit.

Try getting your life back if you get hauled in on this charge. No matter how abundantly plain you make your innocence, some of that stank will attach for the rest of your life.

IDK, how many youth ministers, Boy Scout leaders and Catholic priests are there?

Slippery slope is an highly overused criticism of a number of things.

Time and experience have shown that it is rarely overused in the context of civil rights.

The "pshaw/it's no big" deal types are the ones who overuse their idiotic trope on that subject.  It is absolutely astounding how stupid people can be.

What if I told you that, right now, Apple collects every photograph you take and stores it on their computers?

I think that there is plenty of concern to be had. I think that it will be fascinating to watch what happens with privacy over the... rest of my lifetime I suppose. I think the thing that makes me feel ickiest about what Apple is doing here is how "opt out" and "built in" all of their stuff is. But currently, I don't have any expectation that things I put into the internet are secure from any kind of inspection whatsoever. Photos that I don't want anybody to ever "get" (no kiddie porn) are on devices that have no possible internet connection and physically secured in my possession.

I call BS.... They haven't arrested me yet.

And I think he knew it -- he lost his job a few years ago (through no fault of his own) and last I heard he was a maitre d' at the Hustler Club in New Orleans. I know some of us on this site would claim that as a dream job, but this guy has become a train wreck while working there, as I think most of us would. It's a very dark world and one he is not cut out for.

This is total bullshit and a total invasion of our personal liberties.

The fact that algorithm to search for the pictures exists is more alarming than what it is searching for. This week it is only scanning for kidporn, next week it is scanning for guns, or booze, or whatever else is wanted.

Less than .000001% of iPhone users will give up their iPhone because of this announcement.

the whole AI child porn recognition algorithm thing isn't what they are doing, although I'm sure someone somewhere has worked on such an algorithm. If you store your photos in Google or Amazon's photo services, searching for "booze" or "guns" would definitely yield results.

i feel like I’ve taken the “pro Apple” stance here and I will admit that I’m not all that worked up about false positives for people who upload 30+ known instances of kiddie porn being looked at by authorities. But my point here is that the capability exists and you should assume it is or will be used. If that is concerning to you you should check the settings on your phone.

So, my son was playing virtual reality in our living room completely fucking naked. He's turning 9 next week. It was so absurd I took a picture of it and sent it to my brother so he too, could laugh at his nephew the way I was laughing at my son.  Is Apple going to turn me into the feds now?  Is this something I should worry about?

No,  that would not get you busted...There are ton of what we are assured are failsafes in place, and Apple swears this will always and forever be only about child porn, but the article in the OP points out that these kind of measures have proven to be Trojan Horses not just in countries like China but also places like Australia, where the government went after a journalist because he had pics of Aussies committing war crimes in his cloud.

Also the danger that you could get hacked / framed, all set against the minimal benefits this would bring: because it seeks out only old pictures of child porn, it will do nothing to stop the production or transmission of new child porn, and my belief that most kiddy porn fans dumb enough to store their pics this way would have been caught already. I am sure it will catch some, the news will be trumpeted from the mountaintops, and the other cloud hosting services will follow along, and then the pornographers will move on to something else, all while our clouds are combed over every month, but only for kiddy porn, they swear, that's all it will ever be....until some Patriot Act 2 comes along.

Sending nude photos of a 9-year old boy to another adult male? Yeah, that could probably get a police officer talking to you. I doubt you would get arrested once you explained the story but it could lead to them looking for other evidence.

Some funny stories don't require photographic evidence.

Idk. That’s not the kind of situation that sounds fun to test out with CPS.

Yet this was the norm when we were kids and that shit was processed at Fox Photo and your mom would review the pictures at the store "oh, here is little Eddie peeing in the flower bed with his pants completely pulled down."
