Low turnout could be a number of things.  It could be Melenchon voters staying home, it could be some folks thinking Macron has this in the bag, or it could be that round 2 coincides with school hols (oops).

There's been a lot of discussion about Mélenchon supporters holding their noses to vote for Macron. But it's not just turn-out that's low, they're also talking about people showing up but leaving their ballots blank. They just said the abstention rate is the highest since 1969, according to IPSOS.

That’s weird. Any clarification since?

Not that I'm aware of. Surprisingly little commentary about it. Apparently, the brighter/lighter colors were introduced in 1974, so it's actually a return to the traditional colors.

Jumped into my mind based on dates is that they brightened it to look better on color tv, and now that tvs have advanced they changes back.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - it looks much better now with the "new" (old?) colors that he changed it back to, rather than the 1974 colors, and having watched a lot of 1970s and 1980s TV, can see why they'd change the colors to be brighter in '74.

Yeah, based on the FB comments of French friends, it's not a surprise that he won, but it's a very worrisome trend. Le Pen only got 33% five years ago. Of course, her "base" are a mix of rural olds, disaffected blue collar workers, and a core of actual far-right fascists. Still a big sigh of relief.

Now the allegations and lawsuits begin, right?

Le Pen's concession speech was full of piss and vinegar about continuing to fight for the forgotten rural area and the "real" France.

Next step are the legislative elections in June, so much of her focus was on gaining as many seats as possible.

Mélenchon, who is pretty much the leading figure of the Left, just spoke and announced his campaign to become Prime Minister (head of the legislative branch). He did thank France for rejecting Le Pen.

Macron will need the support of the Leftist parties to have a ruling majority in the National Assembly (lower house) to get anything done.

In other good news, the opposition in Slovenia looks to have won in their parliamentary elections today.

Their current Prime Minister is a big ally of Orban and right-wing populist. He's also been compared frequently to Trump, supported him, and had even spread conspiracy theories about our 2020 eleciton.

Exit polls show opposition winning Slovenian election

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) — Exit polls in Slovenia’s parliamentary election on Sunday suggested an opposition liberal party won by a landslide, dealing a major defeat to populist Prime Minister Janez Jansa, who was accused to pushing the small European Union country to the right while in office.

The polls conducted by the Mediana polling agency and published by public broadcaster TV Slovenia and commercial Pop TV, showed that opposition Freedom Movement won 35.8% support compared with the ruling conservative Slovenian Democratic Party with 22.5%,

Trailing behind the top two contenders were the New Slovenia party with 6.8%, followed by the Social Democrats with 6.6% and the Left party with 4.4%. The polls have proven reliable in the past.

If confirmed in an official tally, the result means that the Freedom Movement, a newcomer in the election, stands likely to form the next government in a coalition with smaller center-left groups. The party leader addressed supporters via a video message from his home because he has COVID-19.

“Tonight people dance,” Robert Golob told the cheering crowd at the party headquarters. “Tomorrow is a new day and serious work lies ahead.”

Interesting that while everyone wrings their hands over Le Pen they are glossing over the fact that Mélenchon is also pretty bad news.

As an aside, if you're watching you'll notice the colors of the French flag are darker than what we're used to. Macron changed it, without comment, in 2020.

Gene Smith changed the color of Ohio State’s scarlet. Made it darker because presumably it was more marketable that way.

I like Macron. I hate Smith.

Didn't he run on an anti-NATO platform? Basically argued against intervention in Ukraine up until the election then backed off.

He also has a weird habit of making antisemitic statements.

Said that the Jews killed Jesus and often refers to a certain community pushing an international bankers globalization agenda.

Nah, that isn't concerning at all.

Yup. Wants France to pull out of both the EU and NATO. He's an old school socialist (I'd personally label him a Marxist) who thinks that "American Imperialism" is the greatest threat to the world.

He's also a big fan of Maduro in Venezuela and has had to walk back some of his support for that regime: https://www.politico.eu/article/european-fans-venezuela-nicolas-maduro-corbyn-tsipras-podemos-melenchon-pope-francis-5star/

Quote

The leader of far-left party La France Insoumise (France Unbowed), who has called a big demonstration against President Emmanuel Macron on September 23, makes no secret of his admiration for the Bolivarian revolution and its leaders. In 2013, after the death of Chávez, he wrote in the communist newspaper L’Humanité that “the Bolivarian revolution is for us a source of inspiration.” He then hailed Maduro’s appointment as president in a tweet saying “we welcome Maduro’s victory.” However, Mélenchon said in a French radio interview in April, when questioned about his support for the government in Caracas: “I don’t support any dictatorship, I’ve never supported any dictatorship anywhere in the world.”
