There was nothing to orchestrate. Nobody really gives a fuck about anyone in that draft really except perhaps Castle. Look at these stiffs

1. Hawks draft Zaccharie Risacher (JL Bourg-en-Bresse)
2. Wizards draft Alex Sarr (Perth)
3. Rockets draft Reed Sheppard (Kentucky)
4. Spurs draft Stephon Castle (Connecticut)
5. Pistons draft Ron Holland II (G League Ignite)
6. Hornets draft Tidjane Salaun (Cholet Basket)
7. Trail Blazers draft Donovan Clingan (Connecticut)
8. Spurs draft Rob Dillingham (Kentucky) — Traded to Timberwolves
9. Grizzlies draft Zach Edey (Purdue)
10. Jazz draft Cody Williams (Colorado)

Trivia for the day.

--------------

The most recent instance of both an NBA and a WNBA team from the same city holding the No. 1 overall picks in their respective drafts occurred in 2025. In that year, the Dallas Mavericks secured the top pick in the NBA Draft and are expected to select Duke standout Cooper Flagg. Simultaneously, the Dallas Wings won the WNBA Draft Lottery and selected UConn star Paige Bueckers with the first overall pick.

Prior to this, the only other occurrence was in 2003 when the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Rockers both held the No. 1 picks. The Cavaliers famously selected LeBron James, while the Rockers chose LaToya Thomas. Unfortunately, the Rockers folded after that season.

Thus, Dallas in 2025 became only the second city in history to achieve this rare dual No. 1 draft pick milestone.

SGA was drafted by the Clippers. There was a pick swap during the draft, the Hornets just had to make the pick for the Clips because the way the NBA tracks draft trades is incredibly stupid.

Kobes rights were also traded on draft day to the Lakers, so he wasn't exactly their target.  That team is just cursed to always fail forever and make the wrong decisions.

I think the point was that those superstar players were available at the time Charlotte was on the clock, so yes you can draft that level of talent without winning the draft lottery.

that they chose to make trades instead of just selecting and keeping those players is on them, not the nba or its process.

I hope that's just ignorance from PG because it comes across as pretty racist. I mean that's a fucking WILD take for anyone with a brain that has watched Flagg play.

yeah he doesn’t even give any reasons as to why he feels the way he feels. 100% feels like a typical case of “white boy can’t be that good”.

Listen, man, you don't get post-career Kendrick Perkins' money by rattling off logical, rational, well-reasoned takes.

George isn’t completely off base. I’d like to see the full interview with an explanation.

Flagg is probably Pippen. Pippen is a hall of famer, but he was never considered a franchise player. If George had said this and followed it up with I think Bailey has a better chance to become a franchise player, then sure that’s within the realm of a reasonable take.

The Sixers will probably desperately try to the trade the 3rd pick, fail miserably, Bailey will develop into a perennial All Star, and Morey will continue his graft another decade.

Flagg isn't Pippen. He's LeBron.

There is no "other side". There is no debate to be had.

Paul George is a lunatic for making that comment and probably racist. For you to then try and hold water for him is insane.

Have you fucking watched this kid play basketball?

I mean even your Pippen comp is hysterical. You think Ace Bailey projects to be better than Scottie Pippen? What the fuck are you talking about.

No way Bailey is better.   Shit they had the #2 and #3 prospects and didnt even make the tourney.   We've seen those kinda players before in Fultz and Simmons.     If you cannot get your team to the tourney and at least win a game or two I'm not buying that you can dominate pros.     Too many examples of great players on subpar teams still getting a game or two in the tournament (Steph, Ja, Kawhi, and more) for me to put in faith in Bailey being that good.

That said I really dont think either is a franchise player.    Those clips weren't really special to me.   Just a very good CBB player.  We will see.

They'd be special to you if he was black.

He's about to set the league on fire. Dallas stumbling ass-backwards into him is crazy.

Again, I’m trying to understand where George is coming from. I never said I agreed with him or that Bailey is a better player.

Lets take a step back.   What is your definition of setting the league on fire?

Of the last 5 ROYs:  Ja, Lamelo, Scottie Barnes, Paolo, Wemby who do you think he is as good as coming in?   I'd have him slotted in a tie for 3rd with Paolo behind Wemby and Ja.  I didnt think Paolo was special coming out either.   Still not sold on him being a franchise level player.

It’s a good draft. Of course Glagg could be a generational player. Harper would be the first pick on almost every other draft. A lot of people think he’s a Cade Cunningham level prospect

Tre and Fears should also be really good pros.

The top 6 should a really good player. Unfortunately, the Rockets are not in top 6.

Pump the brakes on Flagg=LBJ.

Keep an eye on Maxime Raynaud out of Stanford.  He's my good buddy's son's close friend at Stanford (my buddy's son plays Vball).  Max had nowhere to go last Christmas so he came and stayed down here for a few days.  He came to yearly Christmas party a big group of us has.  Very nice kid.  And then he really started coming on later that season.  Looking like a possible (probable?) first rounder.

Sounds like something Ryan Clark would say.

im open to a wager that says Flagg is closer to pippen than lbj as far as stats.  Must adjust for pace

Just now revisiting this thread - sorry for being contentious like that it's just easy to get wrapped up in this shit. Wasn't trying to take it in the wrong direction.

I like him better than all of those players save Wemby assuming Wemby doesn't continue having health issues. Paolo is the only other one that makes me pause.

This kid is going to be the fucking truth. When I compare him to LeBron it's because that's what I see when I watch him play - it's not because I'm trying to be dramatic or overly effusive or whatever - it's because that's what I think the most accurate comp is.

That doesn't mean I think he's going to be LeBron. But this idea that the team drafting #1 should reach for a guy that may have a higher "ceiling" is absolute, asinine bullshit and it seems to mainly be coming from ignorant former players that appear to have a problem dealing with how good this white kid is.

I try and not see race when I evaluate or cheer for players - although I'd be lying to you if I said that I don't like seeing white Americans ball out. So my opinion is probably colored a little bit.

That said - what I care more about is being right about who can play and who can't when I make evals. You asked me what I mean by "set the league on fire" - I'm not sure how to quantify that. I guess I would say that by year 3 I expect he's a top 20 player in the league. And that feels like a baseline.

This kid is fucking different. And he doesn't deserve this veiled racist trash being spewed about him. (and I'm not accusing you of any of that)

Maybe I'll pay attention when an actual great has something to say about him instead of salty bitches like PG and Cousins.

Injuries wrecked tmac.  Prime tmac wasn’t that far from Kobe.    Injuries took a lot away from guys like grant hill and penny too.

They televised some of the scrimmages. You can view it yourself. Flagg held his own for sure.

Prime TMac and Kobe were neck and neck.   Kobe even said it.   He just never had a good enough team to compete for titles when he was in his prime.   Those HOU teams were pretty good and he showed he could still really play, he just couldnt carry a team.    He is still very close to the top of my favorite players to watch.    I was in ORL when he got there and he scored effortlessly like very few others could.

TMac was one of my favorite players, but I'd definitely tap the brakes on saying they were neck and neck. TMac was more talented than Kobe, but Kobe was miles ahead when it came to mentality, work ethic, and leadership.  That was always the biggest separating factor, IMO.

Yeah I wouldn't put him over Ja at all.    And I'm talking Ja at the time of his draft.   I said back then that whoever got the #1 should have done a Chris Webber type trade for a team clamoring for Zion, taken Ja and been better for it.    He's a fucking idiot but he can fucking go on top of getting other guys buckets.

As far as Flagg goes, he is good, really good.  My point wasn't that he isn't.   I just don't see that kind of apex level player in him.   Has nothing to do with him being white.  Like I said, I see him and Paolo similarly.   I could be wrong and will have no issue admitting it if I am eventually.

Ultimately, we have a little difference in what "setting the league on fire".   For me it would be a Grant Hill type of impact where he is top 5ish in a couple yrs.   Nothing wrong with top 20ish but that wouldnt meet my definition.   That is around where I would have Paolo which kinda goes back to my point.

TMac was 1st team All NBA 2002 and 2003.   Consistently top 5 in MVP voting while being on pretty crappy teams overall.  He absolutely was neck and neck with Kobe at that time.

I see this notion that Kobe was some kind of overachiever repeated a lot and its actually kind of funny.    Yes, he had an insane work ethic but acting like he wasnt CRAZY talented is something I've seen from some lately and nothing could be further from the truth.
