Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - I'll have to check it

Sicario - is there a series? Saw the movies

Andor - watched (almost added Star Wars to my list of stuff I liked, but figured we all watch these.)

Thanks for Spraying.

Four episodes in...

What are some other shows of similar type?

My jam seems to be international Spy / Agent, Assassin, Gangster (the come up),  Drug Dealer (but not the dude in New Mexico that people seemed to love...)

With some pace and not 7 episodes of pure character development.

The Agency

There's both a US movie and a BBC special series. The BBC version is 7 episodes, stars Alec Guinness, and is superb. The movie is good but bad editing makes it a bit confusing.

MI5, known as Spooks in the UK.

Whitechapel, which is about MI6. Both of those are multi-season tv series.

Smiley's People

A Spy Among Friends

Line of Duty - an excellent brit series about a police internal crimes unit that deals with nefarious crimes and is extremely well-written and produced. Not as highly produced as Slow Horses but definitely more realistic.

Little Drummer Girl

Tehran

Homeland

The Americans

McMafia

Burn Notice

Deutschland 83, Deutschland 85 and Deutschland 87.

Killing Eve

I thought both were great, and in the movie's defense, they had to edit 7 episodes of plot into 2 hrs, so I gave it a break. Oldman was excellent as always.

Seconded. Early episodes featured a young Mathew Macfadyen, and Peter Firth (who played Zampolit Putin in the The Hunt for Red October).

2 other excellent gangster shows that came to mind are Mr Inbetween and Boardwalk Empire.

I also enjoyed Magic City but it was canceled after only 2 seasons, and I can't recall exactly how much action- or suspense-packed it is.

the season finale was vey satisfying.  i found myself rooting for the Jackal even though he's not the sort of bad guy i typically root for.  unlike Dexter and Omar Little, the Jackal/Duggan/Charles has no code.  he just murders for money, even "innocent" people who did nothing wrong.  but when the supposed good guys are as shitty as they are, i gotta root for the Jackal.

season 2 is gonna feature a lot more Charles Dance, which is always a good thing. he needs to get got.

Yeah I enjoyed it until the last episode.

Spoiler

It felt rushed and poorly edited.

I am ok with the idea of Bianca getting killed but they spent so much time with her, and her death had no weight, ultimately.  It just…. Happened.   Insert Piers Morgan “Oh, no. Anyway…” gif

Then he gets broadsided and we just cut to him on the ?Danube? talking with the connect on the last job?

Maybe they are setting up a second season with Zina as a main character.  I dunno.  Ending felt rushed and choppy.

There were three prior:

book

1973 movie

Bruce Willis movie

and this one. In the priors,…

Spoiler

…they always found the “mole” and stopped the Jackal. In this one, they never found the mole (although Osi knows who it is now) and didn’t stop the Jackal.

Looking fwd to next season, where I assume Osi is the counter and “Gary the spotter” plays a big role?

Not sure if this show just isn't for me but random thoughts:

  • A whole lot of shit the Jackal does makes no sense. He's billed as a guy that makes no mistakes, yet he does shit like openly discuss killing someone for money in public with a woman he literally just met 1 minute prior. He leaves a massive wake of destruction and obvious clues almost everywhere he goes. At times, he comes off as less of a master assassin than a more serious Mr. Bean type character who is just constantly at the mercy of an endless series of implausible accidents.
  • There are so many plot inconsistencies and unbelievable coincidences that it would take all day to go through them, and the plot is also extremely telegraphed almost all the time.
  • The tech conspiracy at the heart of the plot is insanely stupid and lacks any depth, especially compared to entirely realistic conspiracy in the novel. Complete waste of Charles Dance's talents casting him as basically a nameless, boring, corpo piece of shit that you forget exists every time he's off screen.
  • The cast consists of quite a few heavy hitters, all great actors in their own right, but the show still feels like a soap opera half the time, especially the family subplot. Everything to do with his wife, child, and in-laws is so incredibly cheesy, poorly acted and poorly written that it feels almost deliberately bad.
  • I know that real life intelligence agencies are exactly this evil and worse, but this portrayal of MI6 just feels generically cartoonish as hell. None of the characters involved are interesting at all.
  • Bianca's character makes no sense, other than being a generic avatar for MI6. There is no reason for her to have a family subplot at all, it was all stupid and unnecessary.
  • Nothing that happens carries any emotional weight at all because we just hop from one unbelievable scenario to another.

I thought the first few episodes were pretty good and then the show just entirely went off the rails and got goofier every episode. I will probably still watch the next season because I'm a glutton for punishment.
