Following the Italian GP, Piastri was up 31pts on Lando and 94pts on Max.

Following the Singapore GP, Piastri is up 22pts on Lando and 63pts on Max.

6 races to go.

Lando only picking up 12 points in the last 3 races where Oscar finished 3rd, DNF, 4th has to feel brutal.

The McLarens wrecking each other in a race he wins is the best case scenario for Max.  A 25 point gain on them both and he has a chance at the championship.

What shit coverage

One pass in the top 8 after the first lap and they show the diver view 20 minutes after it happened

Then don't show any of Alonso catching Hamilton at the end

Yep. And Alonso made 3 straight passes for points positions that they never showed replays of or even mentioned until several laps later. Crazy.  Woulda probably been pretty wild to actually see Alonso catching Lewis at the end there, too. My kid & I were watching the gap drop like crazy & he didn't believe me when I said it was gonna be close.

Yeah it's like I told my kid, McLaren is basically inviting Max back into the WDC race by doing it the way they're doing it. It's like they want to yet again win the WCC while losing the WDC.

Oh, and all this talk about the 'brutal' heat, lol. Pfft. Race start temp was 84 degrees with 74% humidity. Not optimal, but far from the bloodbath they make it out to be. It's been pretty fucking hot here lately. Hotter than usual. They better hope it cools off for the USGP.

No summer breaking front in site, so I would expect it to be miserable.  It was hot as balls for a recent one also.

Yeah that's kinda what I've been thinking. Another big difference here will be the sun baking down on them. 84 at night vs 92 in the daytime is only 8 degrees difference, but the sun beating on you makes it much worse.

Saw that, too.  But didn't Lewis's brakes give out at the end of the race and he basically hobbled to the finish?

ETA...yes, yes they did and Lewis with the troll job. Lol.

84*/74% is higher heat index than Houston noon today. Add that to a 140* cockpit under a firesuit.

George said he lost something like 8-10 lbs of weight due to sweat. This is the same as an MMA fighter does on their last day of weight cutting, where they're literally draped under blankets and biking in sweat suits to the point near exhaustion.

I find an unwelcoming aspect of F1 spectating is how much information relevant to the competition is hidden beneath the surface and how little of it surfaces in broadcast TV.

If you watch just the race alone, you'll witness a handful of overtaking, and conclude how good drivers are based on the results table. Maybe the commentators will remark on a parts upgrade, or they'll share a snippet of the radio messages here or there.

95% of the juicy stuff has to be gleaned from interviews with driver and team, and in the multiplexing premium F1 stream.  Like, Charles finished a respectable P6, but he was told throughout the ENTIRE race to lift and coast.  Hamilton was told a similar thing until his breaks failed. There are lots of corner-specific instructions that explains why someone went fast or slow or got passed and you'll just assume a driver is good/bad and never learn the true reason from broadcast or even reading recaps.

84/74 is a 92 heat index. Houston's 89/59 at noon today (per Weather Underground) is a 95 heat index. At race time today in Austin, the heat index would be 94, climbing to 95 during the race. Small difference, but even if they were the same, I'd take the nighttime race there vs the daytime race here. I grew up in the Houston area & have spent a couple weeks in Thailand recently (pretty similar to Singapore), and there isn't too much between the two weather-wise. And re: the firesuit, I used to wear a much heavier, much less breathable, hotter one into fires in Austin, and I can tell you it was always much worse to wear in the daytime, even with slightly lower temps. Man, bunker gear soaks in the sunlight & radiant heat and holds body heat like nobody's business. It's insane.

The broadcast team was fucking awful. It seems like we missed every single overtake.

So I'm taking my teenage racing fanatics to their first F1 weekend here in Austin.

Any tips besides "don't do it!"?

I think we're doing the shuttle from downtown somewhere into the venue.

Other than that I have no clue what to expect.

Advice or thoughts/prayers from those that have been recently are welcomed.

I was already watching the Lewis onboard to see if he was gonna catch Kimi instead of the main feed. Then saw the brake sparks and him cutting all the corners, so then flipped over to Nando til the end to see if he'd catch and pass Lewis. He dropped a few f bombs at the end. lol

Non-F1 PSA: Bathurst 1000 this weekend, + 5 support series. This schedule link converts times to our local time: https://www.supercars.com/events/2025-bathurst-1000/schedule

Dunno if it's on tv here, but you can buy Superview for $10AUD for a month then cancel, decent deal for 6 hours of entertainment https://www.supercars.com/superview

Really enjoyed the one time they raced here. Too bad we can't have nice things. Petite Le Mans this weekend too!

Parking question for those that have been:

1) Do you recommend the downtown shuttle to COTA? Seems easy but I've heard also takes a long time. $400+ for 3-day shuttle passes is insane.

2) Official on site parking? $350. Close. Can have a cooler with us. Traffic will kill me?

2) A 3rd party parking lot and own car? Cheaper and car and a cooler still nearby. We plan attending all day each day, as of now.

3) I assume Uber or having someone drive us would be similar to #2 but without our own food/drinks. Uber rates probably gouge.

Something else that has worked well for you?

Gracias.

We have taken the shuttles the three times we have been.  Twice from downtown and once from the Long Center.  No one transportation is better than the other, so you may as well not have to mess with driving.  Once on the bus either way, we moved without much wait.  The line after the race to board the buses was the only wait we really had, and wasn’t bad.

My kids absolutely loved it.  It is a spectacle and it feels big, because it is.  That energy is palpable throughout the crowd.

I hope y’all have a great time.

Announcement of Apple’s US F1 rights confirmation tipped for United States GP
Apple is expected to secure the US Formula 1 rights in a deal worth a reported $140m per year with an announcement in Austin   https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/announcement-of-apples-us-f1-rights-confirmation-tipped-for-united-states-gp/10766760/

Doesn't really affect us much, as we have AppleTV+, but not many people do, relatively speakling. This move seems to run counter to LM/FOM's stated desire to grow F1 viewership in the US. This will shrink it, pretty significantly.

This, they are already having issues in Europe with viewership declining because they have priced out many of the average fan.

Yeah US sponsors probably won't care too much for that.

Great long term growth strategy.

Ticket prices are stupidly high and only going to get worse,  Europe is losing viewership due to struggles with affording the costs of broadcasts, and now you will make it tougher to access in the US, but make more money in the short term.

The obvious solution is shorter races and more sprints on circuits that make passing difficult to impossible.

Agree with all you guys have said. I have Apple TV through T-Mobile so hopefully I’ll be fine.
I really hope they don’t screw it up like NBC would. At least it’s not on peacock

I'm not sure it's possible to fuck it up as badly as FuckNBC did. Hope I'm not wrong. Apple+ is a great streaming service & is actually my favorite. No idea how they'll present it, or if they'll just continue the Sky rebroadcast. Should be interesting to see it play out.

I doubt they keep F1TV. Hopefully they port over the best traits from F1TV I to Apple+... especially the library of races, picture quality, and onboards. And I much prefer listening to David Coulthard on the broadcast vs. Crofty.

This, plus, if you are going to make me pay for another streaming subscription, I don't want to EVER fucking hear from Karun Chandhok ever again.

I always camp out there for the weekend so can't really help, but a friend usually drives in each day and parks in some private parking that's not too bad of a walk (within one mile of entrance at the main grandstands).  I'm pretty sure some of us discussed it on the COTA Seems Like It Sucks thread, so you could look for some details there.

I love the weekend.  I've been every year.  Sure there are lots of challenges and issues.  You have to go into it knowing it's going to be a complete clusterf and approach it with a sense of humor.

Comfortable shoes, light clothing, maybe some layers including a light jacket or windbreaker because it's going to be a little chilly in the mornings but it'll get hot throughout the day.

Each person can take in one factory-sealed 20 oz. water, and/or you can take an empty Camelbak to refill at the various water stations around the venue.  You should definitely do this.

The first two days, I never bother sitting in my seats.  I usually walk all around the track to see the cars from different angles and viewpoints.  That's also a good time to scout out whatever shade there might be.  There are usually some pretty large tents set up all around.  They'll fill up on Saturday and Sunday, which are the busiest days.  Friday is actually my favorite day out there, it's less crowded and less frantic.

Don't buy merch at the racetrack.  It's crazy expensive and you can often find it cheaper online.

However, if you get caught up in the moment and feel you must buy merch at the racetrack, do it early on Friday.  The lines at all the merchandise stands get much longer as the weekend rolls on.

Plan to buy as little food as possible at the racetrack because it's also crazy expensive.  Eat a big breakfast before you go.  You can take a backpack, and we often sneak in food like sammiches.  Just wrap it up inside a windbreaker or something, inside your backpack.  They rarely check bags all that closely.  I've been known to sneak an entire charcuterie board including cheese knives into the venue.

Have a good attitude about it all, and have fun!  It really is an extraordinary event.   Good luck, we're all counting on you.

Is there a decent amount of shade for GA tickets (on Friday)? Trying to decide whether we do GA or spring for something covered which is obv more expensive. Never been before.

There aren't really shaded seats anywhere, GA or grandstand, outside of the luxury suites and the main grandstands.

No.

Este. There is none, except under the ped bridges & right up next to the GSs, and those are small areas that get crowded fast. It sucks.

I think I saw somewhere that they added shading to some of the GSs also. Haven't looked into it though, as to what rows it would cover, how much more it will cost (it will make an already expensive GS seat more expensive. That much you can count on).

Be advised that if you sit in the T12 GS, you're gonna cook, even if they cover it. It faces south.

Friday will be my family's first time to COTA. We have parking a pass for lot F and our seats are in turn 9. Are pedestrians allowed to enter tunnel 2? If not, what is the best way to get to that part of the track? I know we will spend a good amount of time walking around and checking out the track. Driving in from San Antonio, what is the best route to take and how bad is traffic getting in?

Since you're parking in F, you'll need to enter at the Grand Plaza, which is the entrance near T15. From there, you can walk across the 2 pedestrian bridges. After the second one, turn left and walk out to T9. Bring good walking shoes! You can walk from F to the Grand Plaza, or you might be able to catch a shuttle once you get to COTA Blvd. ETA: It may be possible to catch a shuttle from the Grand Plaza entrance before you go through the gates, and take it all the way around to the T11 entrance, then walk to 9. Verify before you go, though.
