I've said for years now I think the networks screw this up trying to maximize complete game windows.  I'm sure someone is making decisions off data but I'm convinced they are wrong.   They should treat this like the NCAA tournament first round with staggered starts. Even in a 2 game window like last night, they should have scheduled puck drop for a little before 8PM CT targeting 2nd intermission of the early game.  They should go to studio for a 2 minute recap then go to "puck drop" of our game on ESPN during 2nd intermission, have our game air on ESPN 2 until early game concludes, then it should work out where, absent OT, the early game would finish right as our 2nd period is about to start.  So in addition to getting more casual viewership in central cities (only real 'fans' are going to stay up until 11:30 on a Monday), you might get more east coast hockey fans committed to actually finishing the late game.  For example, I have a NYC client that is a big hockey fan that watched our first period but called it a night after that considering 2nd period would start around 11ET.

Also, for us locally, the late starts really hurt building fandom for the kids as they can't stay up for this.  If we win, when I get home, I leave a rally towel and a glow bracelets (they hand out at playoff games) set to green outside my son's door as a signal that we won (and if not there he knows we lost). He told me he asked Alexa what the score was before he fell asleep and it was 1-0 so I'm glad Wyatt scored fast enough he got to hear that before dozing off LOL.

I know there's quite a few variables -- arenas booked for concerts or have to battle NBA playoffs schedule -- but they shouldn't start a night game any later than 8 local time (probably no earlier than 6:30/7) in any market. Use that as a guide and then stagger them as much as you can in order to let fans watch as many games as possible. Hell, create a "mix" channel like for the NCAA Tournament, Masters, etc.

Houston?

Hell, Denver has as many title teams as Dallas does since 1974.

Cowboys 5, Broncos 3
Nuggets 1, Mavericks 1
Rangers 1, Rockies 0
Avalanche 3, Stars 1

Toronto/Ottawa is if necessary.

Meant to reply earlier that Toronto would likely Toronto. And the Leafs did. Chance to close out at home and lose 4-0.

Yeah. Not sure they think about Houston at all. They hate Texans, I get that, but in terms of cities to hate, the Rockies have never sniffed playing the Stros so I doubt Houston ever enters their minds.

PSA: Duchene interview on the Ticket yesterday (can listen on sportsday app top 10) was really solid.  Typically you can't glean much from athlete interviews but Duchene appears to be a pretty introspective and straight shooter in interviews.  Solid listen.

8:30 (so 8:50) confirmed on Victory/TBS.

Love Razor and Booger, but once these Victory+ broadcasts end, it's gonna take me a month to get the "Phenom-en-Otteerrrrr!" interstitials outta my head.

I mute the commercials any chance I get.

Cautiously optimistic we see Miro back tonight. Pulled this from The Athletic where they breakdown the key matchups from each Game 6. For us, it's MacKinnon vs Ceci.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6324877/2025/05/01/nhl-playoffs-game-6-matchups/

Quote

Colorado Avalanche vs. Dallas Stars

Nathan MacKinnon vs. Cody Ceci

One of the biggest storylines heading into this series was how a Miro Heiskanen-less blue line would handle big minutes against the Avalanche’s best. The Stars have managed better than expected with a 3-2 series lead. But there is at least one more game to get through.

That means weathering more of the Cody Ceci-Nathan MacKinnon matchup.

It’s a matchup that rightfully raises red flags. But the Stars have a reason for it. There is value to being a minute-eater in this league, even if it just means enduring time against the opponents’ best to free up the rest of the blue line.

In 10:34 head-to-head minutes between Ceci and MacKinnon at five-on-five in Game 1, Colorado tilted the ice with an edge in shots (19-7 attempts), expected goals (85 percent) and scoring (1-0). In Game 2, Ceci helped hold MacKinnon to a 22 percent expected goal rate. In Game 3, the Stars were outshot but won the quality battle.

Down 2-1, though, the Avs turned on the jets in Game 4. Colorado generated offense in waves, and it started with the team outshooting Dallas 20-6, with an 85 percent expected goal rate, when MacKinnon and Ceci were deployed together. By Game 5, the Avalanche broke through in those matchup minutes with a 2-1 scoring advantage.

If Heiskanen returns in Game 6, the Stars may want their best defenders to take on MacKinnon. But with home ice, the Ceci matchup is the one Colorado will likely target.

Miro officially out tonight.   Not surprising.  Haven't seen anyone in local media give a real glimmer of hope he's playing this series.  Most seem to think if he was going to be able to play this series he would have given it a go in game 5.  Robertson listed as "day-to-day" which doesn't mean much as I don't think he's practicing with team yet but still a positive update to the extent we win this series.  Leaves in the possibility for a Robo return towards end of next series.

The little 2 second clip they showed during game 5 where he flipped his skate blades real quick makes me think he’s ready but they are holding him out until an elimination game this series, or the start of next series.  Of course that’s me trying to be optimistic.

honestly with how we played last game I am ok with this. if the Stars are motivated enough tonight they are capable of getting it done without Miro or Robo (I know he's not in the conversation, I just like keeping his name in the cosmos). I think it's a gamble either way, and it this tells me (and more importantly, the players) that corch is confident this bunch can get it done. hopefully they reward him/us

Robo was “week to week” right after the injury so day to day would seem an improvement and a guarantee we’d see him in R2 if we get there.

Colorado is better than Dallas, and Rantanen is a bust.

yep Rantanen is a non issue.  isn't a negative but isn't a positive.
