I get what you’re saying, and 100% agree, but this is such a supremely dickheaded way of commenting about a Longhorn that has given his body and apparently career to play here.

My heart goes out to you, man. Eventually, you’ll realize that these guys are all now getting paid, demanding to be treated as adults, demanding more for less on more than an annual basis.

Glad Baxter came here, but he’s been paid handsomely and when he leaves, it’s because his latest monetary ask wasn’t met. Then when you look at what came out of the capital for him, from people never getting anything back, the overall contribution was net neutral at best.

Are you a big Lance McCullers guy as well?

I can’t wait to read your “he was such a good kid, good luck young man!” posts about Moore Jr and Muhammad also.

CTJ is completely on point.

The new reality is that players need to have realistic expectations of their value to their current team.  Those who don't (or their handlers) need to FAFO.

The further into the NIL process, the more rational the market will be for the most part.

If this means any number of fan favorites will take a walk, so be it.

If we are wish casting, I would see if Dakorien Moore would talk to us now that Oregon promoted a literal retard as its offensive coordinator? He’s every bit as talented as Coleman and more of the type of receiver Sark likes.

CJ Baxter had 30 carries for 86 yards in SEC play capped off by a 6 carry, 10 yard effort against A&M. No way they renew his $500K or whatever NIL deal with that production.

He’s injured right now and it could be serious enough to impact his performance next season. So I would not have him on the wish list until his exact injury is confirmed.

I seriously think we could have given every non-Wisner carry to Colin Page and a couple of other walk-ons and the results would have been similar.

CJ is not a kid you tell to hit the portal. I think it’s fair to adjust his NIL but you don’t tell a kid like him there’s no spot for him on the team.  You find a role and hope in year 2 post injury he is able to stay healthy and be great is his role.

People may not agree, but I feel like we are in an age of professional athletics in college football. There is no salary cap, no collective bargaining agreement, and basically a free market where players and universities can do whatever they want within the law. There isn't loyalty one way or the other. It is an open market where the highest bidder wins. And the contracts allow both parties to renegotiate based on their whims.

He’s not worth his ask and the bid-ask are chasms apart. You absolutely wish him well and move on given the needs across the roster and the goals for next season.  Folks can grumble about loyalty and professional sports and the CFB days of yore and such, but the sentimental programs are getting left in the dust. Ask a Clemson fan if you need further confirmation.

Texas is upper tier in NIL without being able to be stupid like Tech, Oregon, Michigan and a few others. They have plenty of money to utilize but they cannot just sling mid 6 figures out to beaten up backs who look like they have had their lick.

If he goes from making however much money to $0, then he's not staying regardless of how nicely they tell him.

He's not a kid and would leave us in a heartbeat if someone offered him a deal he can't say no to.

You do understand there’s a finite amount of money and every dollar devoted to Baxter comes at the expense of someone for whom the coaches have more confidence helps in 2026, right?  It’s unfortunate that being a great student of the game or good role model as a student athlete doesn’t also result in more than 3 yards a carry.

I’m not aware of what his NIL looked liked in 2025, but I was in 2024 and he’s the most overpaid on the team relative to production.  In every professional sport in America that would make him a cap casualty, buy-out candidate or DFA.

Does this mean Texas is like those teams listed, or does it mean Texas is part of a tier of programs that are unable to stupid and those teams can be?

Baxter has made PLENTY of money here. He hasn’t produced much of anything on the field. At most I’d offer a NIL minimum deal, whatever that is. If he is the team guy he claims to be and wants to finish at UT then he should understand

I think it’s fair to ask him to take a pay cut given the lack of production. I don’t think it’s a good look to not give him the option to come back at a fair price. That’s all I’m saying.

I don’t think people understand that in order to sign and keep players like Bell and Cooper that we have to divest from expensive low production players.

Do we just pluck that money from a money tree? And what's a "fair price" for a dude who looked like what Baxter looked like this year? Three dollars?

“Fair price” is relative. Given his career so far I don’t think he should have a price at all.

A ‘fair price’ to Baxter, based upon his production, is about $137 for the season.

Those teams are in the playoffs with better records. We are not   So the latter   I like Baxter, but at some point production needs to be tied to money not potential he’s getting the best education at the best university and he’s likely investing correctly to have generational money time to free up that cash and get some lineman in here

Unfortunately, for 2025 and out confidence in this staff’s evaluation ability, we have a lot of those. Fortunately for our portal prospects in 2026, we can free up a significant amount of money to make a push with Arch next year.

We will keep CJ Baxter if you cover the difference between NIL offer and his NIL ask. That chasm is about the size of a really nice starter home that someone has to pay actual dollars for out of their own pocket or the university. You simply can’t run a budget based on sentiment if you want to win

I’ll add something else about Baxter that @DZX158 appears to overlook-most of these lower profile athletes with NIL deals aren’t offering anything of value to Sonic or Warby Parker or whoever.

In those instances, those NIL dollars come from someone who is writing a check, and usually it’s because they are a fan/alumni of the university and they have the same performance expectations we do.  When you’ve got someone like Baxter that’s already been paid a ton and delivered almost nothing you’re not going to get someone that wants to write that check, regardless of cajoling from Banks and Sark.

This is, btw, a somewhat reasonable way to handle the exit interview with a player and mirrors the same kind of layoff potential all the rest of that work for a living have to hazard.

I said a fair price not what he may want. If he opts to go in a different direction due to what he feels he deserves that’s fine on both sides.
