Kyle Flood is officially ass, my dudes, but I'm starting to give Becton some side eye, as well. OL hasn't displayed sufficient power to blow fools off the LOS since he's been here. But he seems to be doing fine at every other position, so maybe it is all technique after all.

The 2023 Michigan Wolverines won the national championship leaning on an elite defense and a running back room that averaged 4.8 (Corum) and 4.2 (Edwards) yards per attempt. Their QB threw 1.8 passing TDs per game and they beat inferior G5 non conference opponents 30-3, 35-7, and 31-6.

The 2025 Texas Longhorns have an elite defense and a running back room averaging 5.0 (Wisner) and 4.5 (Baxter) yards per attempt. Our QB has averaged 2.5 passing TDs per game and we beat an inferior G5 non conference opponent 38-7.

But our team is ass, our OL coach is terrible, our strength coach doesn't know what he's doing, our QB shits when he throws, and the season is doomed unless we start winning games 70-0.

So if you take out a 4:30 second chunk of the game none of what you said is true, which is kind if what everyone is mad about.

If they played like that for let's call it 18 minutes and then put in the backups no one would give a shit...Arch had to play through the late 4th because they needed to give him reps, as a 3rd year in the program going on his 5th start.

The defense is elite. Everything else is really kind of suspect right now if they had to play another team with a pulse.

Are we cheating our ass off? Because that was a pretty key ingredient to 2023 Michigan’s success.

Stroh did not look great. That’s a concern if Neto lost a spot to him. Campbell is such boom or bust. Have to clean up the penalties then work from there

Caution Lies Ahead for Several Texas Starters vs. UTEP (Tuesday AM)

We will see just how cautious Texas is this upcoming weekend against UTEP, but there is a real possibility Texas sidelines a couple of key pieces this weekend.

***

Steve Sarkisian told media on Monday RB Tre Wisner would be considered DOUBTFUL for Saturday's game. Wisner has been dinged up for a couple of weeks, and these non-conference games are looked at as an opportunity to get fully healthy.

“I’d probably say today, he’s doubtful,” Sarkisian said. “I’m not ruling him out. At this juncture of the season, I’m just not in a rush to push guys back out there if they’re not as close to 100% or closer. I just know how long this thing goes. I know what it’s going to look like in October, November, December, and hopefully January. Is the juice worth the squeeze?"

Sarkisian called Wisner's ailment a "leg injury" but also viewed the sidelining of the SEC's lone 1,000-yard rusher to return in 2025 as an opportunity to get the ball in the hands of Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson.

***

WR DeAndre Moore did not practice on Monday, OTF has learned. Moore left in the 2nd quarter with what appeared to be a shoulder injury following a quick reception on a missile screen.

Moore was taken to the injury tent, and eventually left for the locker room. The belief is Texas will be uber cautious with the 3rd year WR in regards to Moore's availability or usage in week three.

Another name to monitor is DB Michael Taaffe, who was seen limping pretty significantly leaving the facility following the Longhorns' victory over San Jose State. His current status for Saturday is unknown, however it should not come as a surprise on Saturday if Taaffe is limited.

Texas was without DL Alex January on Saturday for the week two home opener, and with SEC play on the horizon, the expectation is the Longhorns continue to be very cautious with the 2nd year standout for this upcoming weekend.

EDGE Colin Simmons gave Texas fans a scare on Saturday as he went down with injury to begin the 4th quarter. As you would expect, Texas will be cautious with Simmons. No indication one way or the other on what to expect for this weekend, but Simmons was seen running off the field smiling on Saturday following the final buzzer of the 4th quarter.

I would like to see Kibble given an opportunity to compete for a job the next 2 games. I have no issue with Neto, but he is a 5th year guy. It is not a lot of snaps but the results have been middling at best. Unless Neto is significantly better, I would rather see the young guy with the job.

Not sure the suspension is over, but Baker and Brooks should have a competition at some pt over the next 2 games

Neto seems significantly better than Stroh. Stroh seems like a shittier version of Conner but at least Conner could pass block

I don't usually go back and watch games again, so this might be off, but I think the first offensive play for Texas featured some absolutely hilarious failure from that tree trunk. He basically just fell forward and touched no one as the played unfolded around him.

2 things.

1. It is a small sample size

2. Stroh has gotten horrific grades from PFF. Neto has not gotten good grades. Low 60s grades are not winning football. If we are getting below starter level play, might as well give it to the youth. Perhaps a better way to say it is neither Neto nor Stroh have shown they deserve to start. I am throwing out the idea that Nibble, who looked good vs SJSU (small sample size, graded in the 70s) should be allowed to compete.

Neto and Stroh have been in the program long enough for Flood to know he needed to go to the portal for at least two players this offseason. It was mentioned briefly by the 9.95’ers this offseason but not enough. If Texas misses the playoffs we are going to look back at that roster mismanagement as one of the main reasons.

Next year the line is a full on emergency situation if Goosby goes pro. They will have to go for 3-5 players in the portal.

You’d be correct. Then the second rep he got whipped really bad for a loss

Being on average 20 points higher is significantly better overall when in comparison to mid 40s. They had similar snaps vs San Jose. Watching the game and rewatch most of our offensive success was when Neto was in, not Stroh.

I get that, but if Neto keeps putting up low 60s grades you will be bitching about him in 2 weeks. The argument is not if Neto is a better option than Stroh, it is who is best option on the roster. Honestly, I do not who that is currently. Just like to see more snaps over the next 2 games.

If you look at the last 3-4 classes it sure looks like we didn't bring in enough HS OL. I suspect they intended to go to the portal this last offseason like they did in years past for a couple guys, but I don't remember any starter quality portal OL this year -- at least ones that didn't portal straight to another school. Maybe the staff got caught assuming they would have some options but those never materialized? (I don't think its a bad strategy assuming there are good portal options every year, because then you don't have to spend years on development and some of those won't work out anyway).

Whatever the reason, the OL room is a huge concern not just this year but going forward as you mention. (oops meant as a reply to @Newy25)

Well it seems like our OL coach is playing both of these guys currently so if Neto continues to play 20 points hire even if 60s that’s far better than if Stroh continues to play 40s which his sand bags for feet are severely limiting him. Like I said, the tape shows Neto also being a better player , not just their PFF grade.

Stroh 89 snaps

Neto: 22 snaps

Kibble- 10 snaps (72.6 grade, 73.7 pass/72.1 run)

Neto is getting 11 snaps a game, so that is not a lot of snaps. He may look bad with a 40+ a game.  Kibble only has 10.

It is not up to me, but I would be giving more snaps to Neto and Kibble the next 2 games. I do not know who the best option is currently. All I know is Stroh has struggled mightily and having an open competition here vs the next 2 tomato cans seems reasonable. At worst you are setting a culture of accountability

Was there anyone depraved enough to chart the zone vs power/gap snaps on running downs vs SHSU? Just from watching it live it looked like they shuffled around between the two quite a bit. Would love to know if the line is mainly struggling more on one concept vs the other.

Right now everyone except Goosby and Campbell are inexperienced guys who need reps to develop. Just like the QB, RBs other than Wisner, and all of the receivers. It's a rebuilding offensive roster, so set your expectation accordingly. Relax and let them develop.

Not speaking for anyone else, but Campbell might be the most disappointing guy on the OL. Really hoping to see him put it together this year and realize his potential. Hoping he would be a guy to rely on and raise the OL play.  Baker and Stroh are so young. They will likely show great improvement over the course of a year, albeit starting from a very low point. Based on talent level, I would rather bet on Baker. Campbell has enough snaps and experience that I am starting to think this is who he is. It is only 2 starts, so probably a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

Yeah, Stroh isn't him at LG. The only 3 guys on the line that should be getting guaranteed snaps are Goosby, Baker, and Campbell. The other two spots you have Hutson, Kibble, Neto, Stroh, and Robertson. I am guessing once Brooks gets back from his suspension he is going to be onboarded quickly.

It’s hard not to be disappointed in him, as he was ranked slightly ahead of Banks in the 2022 class.  I expected more from him as well, especially in his senior year.

Update:

-After 2 games, it is high time to write off new starters across the OL, including the 5 star redshirt freshman RT. His PFF scores have him below acceptability, and his ass needs to be cut, right now.

-Based on less than 20 snaps of play, it is clear that Nate Kibble needs to be starting at LG. Meanwhile, Connor Stroh and Neto Umeozulu need to be washing towels and uniforms in the locker room to earn the remainder of their scholarship pay.

-No, we mean it, it is high time to fire Kyle Flood. The guy is not developing talent. It's fucking obvious. Do not ask about the 4 guys that just joined NFL rosters.

-We're clearly going to need to land 5! OLs in the transfer portal. What we mean by that is the roster just needs to be fucking flushed, folks.

-It is time to consider that Torre Becton may also be a problem. There's got to be a reason players are not developing on this roster.

-Steve Sarkisian has lost the plot and we're being publicly lampooned for his restroom grimace commentary.

We addressed the defensive line with a sense of urgency this offseason that was missing on the offensive line. Presumably because Sark and Flood thought that the players that have been in the program have developed well enough to play at a high level. What is painfully obvious now is that  Stroh and Hutson (and by extension Neto since Stroh beat him out) are not anywhere near the standard we are holding our roster management on defense at.

That doesn’t mean Flood needs to get fired or that Baker is a bust  this early in his career but we failed to recognize that 3rd and 4th year players are not nearly as good as we need them to be. That’s a failure of Flood’s part and pointing that out isn’t wrong IMO.

Its hard for me to throw darts at the OL with some of the shit that happens everywhere else that isn't necessarily because arch or the RBs are getting harassed in the backfield.

this is why the offense is erratic. Pretty much every position group is dealing with inconsistencies. Hard to pinpoint who will miss an assignment on a given play, but it is a good bet someone will

Had a few minutes so watched every offensive line snap of the first half.

Just like I thought it's a lot of inconsistent play with pass pro looking more locked in than run blocking. Though they did seem to do better on power gap blocking where they can fire off the ball and pull. They really struggled on the interior with the reach blocks in zone sets, but honestly that's to be expected going against an undersized but very quick defensive front. SJSU linemen were able to beat all 3 interior linemen at times by under cutting the reach blocks with foot quickness and good hands. The run of TDs off turnovers came with Neto at LG, and he looked mostly fine during that stretch. I feel like Sark was running a lot of zone blocking to test the line, and they predictably failed the most during those. If he wanted to mash SJSU he could have by going exclusively power scheme and mixing misdirection like on the first snap of the game.

They also got beaten in pass pro mostly by being inconsistent in passing off blocks on stunts/twists, or by leaning forward to engage and losing balance. I'd like to know how PFF grades the line to know where they assign responsibility. For example this play came with it 28-7 and would have ended up with a 1st and goal at the 1. The failure here is all on Hutson for being off balance at the snap and getting beaten, but the penalty was on Campbell having to scramble to cover the blown assignment. I wonder how this was graded. Had Hutson not whiffed on this the score is most likely 35-7 going into half.

I think with this inexperienced of a unit that's built for size, Sark should concentrate on getting them clicking in power blocking sets and mostly scrap the zone stuff. Give them stuff they can win and get consistently good with. Something they can make their identity. They're struggling going back and forth, and of course struggling with reach blocks on small, quick linemen.

Wingo looks fast and plays fast on the field. He runs soft routes and has had some drops and balls that missed him, but a lack of speed is absolutely not the problem.

hard to know without the protection call or even seeing alignment pre-snap, but guessing the End dropped to coverage, DT slanted outside, and the NG slanted to offense's right. Huston gets whipped, so poor grade. Campbell sees the guy over him slant away, he should be expecting someone to replace and is slow to recognize, so shitty grade. Complete guess though.

Running free from busted coverage doesn’t mean your playing fast or a play concept designed to get you that open doesn’t mean playing fast either. Running shitty routes affects your game speed.

You might need to watch the games more closely. Wingo was running open plenty of times last year and at times already in this young season because he is FAST, not because of busted coverage. There is never a time that he isn't one of the fastest players on the field. Route running might be a problem. Getting accurate, catchable passes his way has definitely been a problem. A lack of game speed is not.

Comparing OL plug and play from the portal to DTs plugging and playing are two different things. Going and getting a good fit at an OL position to mesh with the rest of the group is one thing, going wholesale into the portal is another. Not only would adding 3-5 guys mean a complete retooling of the starting lineup, but also telling 5-7 guys to hit the fucking road, decimating continuity and development of those on campus.

Everyone on this thread is completely overreacting to the OL play for the first two games. The PFF score might not have been great for some of them against Ohio State, but the unit played well enough to win in that game. They played overall poorly against SJSU, but that's also what this 3 game stint is for - playing up a learning curve. We've seen OL play come together year after year with Flood. Christian Jones and the one giant dude who played for just one year as a 5th or 6th year guy and brags on Flood regularly whose name I forget both showed more in a year under Flood than they had in multiple seasons under prior coaching.

I'm fine with expecting another OT in this class and wish it would be a five person instead of a four person class, so maybe they seek one more guy or two in the portal this cycle, we'll see. Turntine is ready to play from a technique perspective on day one. Is he going to be physically ready? Again, we'll see.

I'm also fine with a bunch of mix and match experimenting at C and LG. I just don't think we're doomed at either spot, nor should not adding a transfer last cycle be viewed as an epic fail.

Running free from busted coverage doesn’t mean your playing fast or a play concept designed to get you that open doesn’t mean playing fast either. Running shitty routes affects your game speed.

Wingo looks plenty fast on the field. He's gripping and trying to make plays before the ball is secured. If he settles down, he's going to have a big year. The plays are there. That all said, you sound like a fucking idiot with your whines about the guy's speed.
