Stroh is a first year starter with a real ability to move people. He also has horrible feet. Let’s give him a chance to grow before writing him completely off.

I only ever see him flat on the ground

He's been in the program 3 years. What year, exactly, is it normal for an OL to grow into Not Horrible feet?

No idea, but he’s probably already ahead of schedule as far as his development.
Cole Hutson is more than ready to be written off in my mind though. Plenty of time and game reps and he’s still average at best.

Stroh could learn how to use his athletic limitations to be effective as he gets more game reps.

Maybe Stroh could contribute at an ok level with more time, I don't know. I do know he's not good enough today to play OL for even a decent unit. He simply isn't able to do it and I worry he's the canary in the coal mine for our whole offense, because you can't have a link that weak in your OL and win a championship. The fact he's still starting makes me worry he's our best option which right now would only mean we simply arent good enough.

If you’re still expecting to win a championship I would adjust those expectations. You don’t win championships with QB and OL play that looks like ours.

The mismanagement of OL recruiting is coming home to roost.

He will never be able to move people because he can't bend his hips and get leverage the way he needs. His feet are fucking god awful and no amount of experience will make up for his complete lack of athleticism and feet work. He's one of the worst starting guards in all of p4 football.

Oh come on. Bad feet for a 370 pound galoot is a systemic problem that isn't going to work itself out. This dude is going to be exploited by every staff worth a fuck that Texas faces. Luckily there are no excellent defensive minds remaining on the schedule for Texas to face, so yeah, we're good to go and should just cross our fingers and give him time.

I joke about the "Kyle Flood needs to be fired" arguments being made throughout this thread, but if we don't see material developments as the season progresses, how the OL is being handled needs to be examined in the offseason.

On the one hand, the NFL production has been outstanding, particularly considering that Goosby will be following suit.

On the other hand, the run blocking has sucked from day one and the talent acquisition hasn't been spotless.

Saturday will be a great atmosphere in T-town.  The Bammers have had this one circled for a year and now with a W in hand after Athens, watch out.

Oh I also fully expect Bama to score 40+ on Vanderbilt's defense. Vanderbilt is basically a 2010's era Big 12 team.

I still believe this team has its best football in front of them and I think Texas can sneak into the playoff on the back of a very good defense. Im not expecting a SEC or national championship. At this point I'm hoping to get the Arch train fully on the tracks and ready for a big campaign next year. Also, I think our schedule sets up well for us this season and I think its possible for us to make the playoff at 9-3.

I’m not a fire Flood guy yet either. But his unit is probably the least talented unit on the team. I know he likes to recruit his types but if you can’t get them to execute they are worthless. I don’t know if Pittman gets another head coaching gig but he’d be a welcome addition on the staff.

OZ blocking and pass pro was fine. They were solid there last year. The line is better at screening people. They have struggled moving people, which is kind of annoying when I have heard about big humans for 4-5 years. We seem to be coaching toward developing screeners. The lack of aggression on IZ and gap schemes is noticeable. Flood is a size queen, but that is not matching his proficiency. The difference in physicality between the DL and OL is night and day. If we did not see for the last 4-5 years, you would swear a different staff is coaching the offense and that includes the S&C.

No.

9-3 means no CCG, and we're not in with that record.

At 10-3 with CCG game, win or lose, we might get in. Def in with a CCG win, even at 10-3.

Brooks just got back from his unofficial suspension and played well (at RT). I cannot blame Flood for that one.

The problem is that Sarkisian wants to run IZ until he's blue in the face. He couldn't last year because of the RB room, but he's damned sure back at it again this season.

What if I’d like to see what Brooks looks like at guard?

I’m still confused on Neto. How on Earth is he considered a step down from Stroh. Does he sometimes sack our own QB during practice?

So yeah if we’re to believe Stroh is the best option between those two, Hutson (with Robertson at center) and Kibble…. what would you say you do here Flood?

Monday

Bobby Burton

By Bobby Burton

After a month of playing heavily outmatched opponents in Austin and an additional off week, the Longhorns must now start conference play by heading to Gainesville, Fla.

The first month was akin to an NFL preseason, only with one big game to kick it off.

**

So here’s where thing stand:

Everything predicted prior to conference play is basically irrelevant. Because now is the time the Horns must perform if they have designs on the college football playoff and a successful season.

Each and every week matters. And I expect the Horns to be tested in different ways.

At the start of the season, I felt like 2025 could largely be reduced to a five-game schedule:

Ohio State

Florida

Oklahoma

Georgia

Texas A&M

But with the improvement of Vanderbilt and to a lesser degree Mississippi State, it feels more like a seven-game run.

In other words, the road is tougher now than was expected heading into the year.

**

Given that it is now conference play, we will start to receive injury reports provided by Texas and their opponents on a week-to-week basis.

If you missed our report late last week, wide receiver Emmett Mosley V is practicing now. He returned to the field a week ago today.

Tre Wisner and CJ Baxter are both expected to be ready to go on Saturday.

Cole Hutson is also back practicing full strength.

In other words, the Horns should be healthy headed into conference play.

One thing to note: Sark has been extremely honest with the injury reports. I can’t recall a single, last-minute gotcha.

I can’t say the same for a couple of other coaches in the SEC, unfortunately.

**

Given what we’ve seen thus far, who are the teams still expected to compete for the SEC championship?

- Alabama

- Georgia

- Ole Miss

- Texas A&M

- Oklahoma

- Texas

- Tennessee

Both Vanderbilt and Missouri would like to be included on that list. Vandy’s offense looks like a juggernaut. And Mizzou’s isn’t far behind.

But we’ll see how things progress the rest of the season. I think both teams are very good one-deep, but team depth may be lacking to survive the entirety of their schedule.

**

In trying to think of a metaphor for this football season, I found one that this reminds me of.

It’s akin to getting an appetizer at a good restaurant as soon as you are seated at your table. But then you have to wait for 30 minutes for the entree to arrive.

That’s how this football season has felt to me, so far. A bang right out of the box only to wait another month for a game of significance.

I only hope the entree this week is a bone-in ribeye and not rubber chicken.

Hook’Em!

Bobby didn't specifically state the OL is reverting to the same five we had prior to Huston playing at LG, but here's the quote.

Been hearing about Sark wanting to run IZ from day one, but it has not happened. To be honest it is not unreasonable for Sark to believe the staff could develop an OL in 5 years that can run IZ. The excuses have varied from young OL to RB. At some point you have to ask if Flood's proficiency lies elsewhere. The only thing that has been a constant under Sark and Flood is the OL has been a finesse OL (screeners vs road graders). It is the biggest reason the redzone has been a major issue under Sark, when he does not have RBs that can hide the issues.

With Stroh in the game we need to be gap scheme with him not pulling.  Zone is a lost cause.

I haven't watched Stroh's every snap, but it appears that he's okay in pass pro and a liability with run blocking. As noted by errbody, he's got bad feet. Plays that require him to move in space ain't happening for him.

He’s okay in straight pass pro simply by virtue of being enormous. He got whipped on a stunt against SJSU, which is apparently what we ding Neto for.

The most infuriating/egregious issue in the run game is that he stops moving his feet at contact. This is something Flood should be teaching, so if Stroh isn’t doing it after 3 years he probably will never have the coordination to do it effectively.

Neto must be a liability in practice if we aren’t seeing him.

The nice thing about the program Sark built is that solution doesn't always have to be "fire the guy." The solution can be "address the issue." It's a nice change to have something stable that just needs to be tended to as opposed to the whiplash of constant wholesale changes.

That is exactly what I noticed about his run blocking, too. It shouldn't be too late to overcome this bad habit. Neto must not be able to learn the plays or the snap count if he's not a viable option at this point.

Sark is also, for reasons I don't understand obsessed with play action. At least he backed it off last game a bit, but I fully expect to see it back in for every fucking 3rd and long against Florida. That'll fool em'.

So, great college coaches and coaching staffs do 3 things well. First, recruit talent to match there scheme. Second, develop that talent to run their scheme. Three, when required make requires adjustments to their scheme to when the talent's ability dictate it necessary.

I openly admit I don't know enough about OL talent to determine if Texas is doing the right job on item one above. I thought they were, talent in the NFL seems like I good indicator but, I'm not sure.

What know with certainty is that for the duration of this staffs tenure, OL penalty problems have been extremely consistent. In fact, they are the most consistent thing on the team aside from top quality D play and shit burger special teams. Next to that is what sure as shit appears to be an absolute unwillingness to adjust our offensive game plan to BOTH our talent and what the opposing D is providing. Sark, the offensive genius, appears more obsessive compulsive on that reality than a genius. Also, why do all the QBs under the QB whisperer seems to completely lose their confidence.

I'll hang up and listen.

Neto has gotten multiple opportunities and has failed to impress every time. Hoping for him to get more PT is hoping his recruiting ranking would lead to better performance.

I’m wondering why guys like Jaydon Chatman haven’t done more to push for PT.

Posted
I know Jaydon Chatman is a backup tackle, but hasn't he played some guard?

He has. Add him to the list of guys who just can’t match everything Stroh gives us. Hell throw a Coleman brother and Jackson Christian in there and that’s about seven guys. All hoping to one day be as good as Stroh.

If you consider the 2022 class an outlier (for multiple reasons, including us being early on position-based NIL and a very fortunate string of coaching changes), the talent acquisition from 2023 to present is somewhere between bad and completely unacceptable for a school like Texas. Now, sometimes it's hard to parse out evaluation versus development, but Flood also appears to suck at developing guys, so we don't necessarily have to worry about which one is the bigger problem.

Would you say hoping to get Neto more playing time is more or less ridiculous than believing Connor Stroh is ahead of schedule in Year 3 when he's one of the worst offensive lineman in all of the P4?

this is a disturbing trend. We heard about Neto early, Chatman, and Kibble. Those guys just seem to disappear after year 1 after hearing how much tehestaff loves their potential. Perhaps, that is on me for listening to the 9.95ers.

For all the shit the Connor got, he was a very good pass blocking guard. You could argue elite. That is not Stroh.

I think Chatman is still getting up to speed after a knee surgery in the summer. No doubt he’d be an upgrade at LG, he’s physical & an athlete. Sark has cracked down on team health reports. You really don’t know where any of these guys are.

I’m not a Stroh advocate, he’s generally bad with limited athletic upside. He’s very strong though and it shows up sometimes.

I was a Neto believer, but he couldn’t beat out Hayden Conner and lost his inside track position to Connor Stroh. No longer a Neto believer.

I’d like to see someone else get into the rotation, but I understand why that won’t happen, so I’m hoping for the best with the red headed kid with the gracefulness of a boulder.

That is literally impossible. Conner was asymptoting towards the worst runblocker in Texas history. He was scraping near an area under the curve known as The Jason Glynn Experience and you do not want a player anywhere near that realm. Stroh might actually be the worst runblocking lineman in Texas history, but that's only mildly worse than Conner.

I'll get shit for this, but this post reminds me of the thought I had last year when Kelvin Banks got hurt. "Why does it have to be one of the guys that you don't want injured?"

the point was Conner was actually very good at an aspect of his job, so you could point to something to say he should be playing

He had 90 pass blocking during the regular season last year. Put that in perspective, Goosby is at 75.4 this year (oddly, 80.8 in run blocking)

Fair. I am a great compartmentalizer. The only time I ever think about the Charlie Strong era is when someone here brings it up, and then I think about it only long enough to dismiss it.
