It's different in the NIL area.

Not that Texas might not still struggle, but look how NIL turned Oregon, Miami, and now Tech into whatever they are now.

You can have a great coach that can dramatically help the smaller teams with less budget turn things around.   But if your school is a top ten NIL team, you should be competitive if you spend that money wisely.

Tell that to LSU and USC who hired relatively large names that had success at other prime programs and find themselves falling well short.

I get how NIL has changed things, but it is not a guarantee that the next hire will match Sark’s success, let alone exceed it.

It shouldn’t have been as hard for the 2010’s but it was.

Recruiting was incredibly difficult in the 2010s. Wtf are you talking about? Texas didn't cheat and everyone else did. Why do you think Texas all of the sudden when it was legal became competitive overnight?

Most of us didn’t like the Charlie hire.

No kidding.

And yet most people on whatever version of this forum we were on then were still blathering on about how “We’re Texas”.

And then the A.D. or donors go out and hire an idiot that thinks he can come in and just push a button and make everything better.

You can have good infrastructure.  You can have NIL money.

You can have the best car money can buy, but if you hire a near-sighted moron to drive it, you still might crash.

No, the roster is and the support infrastructure is, and the facilities are.

Seriously what are you looking at? Sark is a coach. The GM stays, the staff may leave, but the recruiting team stays, the social team stays, the entire brand team stays, the whole thing moves on without Steve Sarkisian. He's not an integral part of anything but the football stuff. In the 2010s a lot more was asked of the coach without as much help. There an unlimited number of assistants, analysts etc.

I think we can find another guy that can go 0-6 vs DeBoer, Day and Kirby

Well, when Mack has a say in hiring his replacement and our president narrowed the field to wanting to hire the first AA hc it made it tough

Still so myopic.  It’s great that you think Texas didn’t cheat.

Read me another fairy tale.

All the big schools have been cheating for decades.  Texas included.  In multiple sports.

Once again, here we are blaming someone else for our failures.  The truth we hired idiots and made poor decisions.

I’m just going by what my old boss, a former Longhorn basketball player, shared with me about what he got paid and what others got paid.

And Longhorn players posting on social media with bags full of new shoes by their sports cars with a caption saying “yeah, we spend it, but we get it right back”.

But yeah, a giant football school in the biggest football state in the nation is the only big football school that behaved like choir boys while everyone else were acting like the cast of Goodfellas.

Sure, Jan.

Man, you guys are sure about your judgments formed in dire moments.

Every coaching hire is a crapshoot. Didn't we supposedly have Saban lined up to take over for Mack? Oops.

Sark seems to have built a strong culture. We were over-rated to start the year based on the notion that Arch would be a Heisman winner and some how we could immediately reload an entire OL. No and no. Sark didn't vote us number one.

There's a real problem with the offense. Sark has blame to take. I have doubts about firing him this quickly.

If Sark does jump, we need to keep PK as y'all say. I have no idea what Kiffin's locker rooms are like.

Would we want Saban out of retirement?

I'm nervous about returning to the wastelands.

eta: I've read more of the thread. Having CDC is a plus, but didn't he hire the suddenly despised Sarkisian?

If that report isn’t horse shit, James Franklin is unemployed. Didn’t CDC pretty strongly consider him pre-Sark?
Not sure that would be an upgrade from the current mid coaching performance we’re rolling out there.

Well, expect to run on all our recruits. What a dickhead right in the middle of the season for Sarks “representatives to put this in the media. Fuck this loser. Get the fuck away from this organization you cancer ass bitch now it’s gonna be nothing but a distraction on both recruiting and are already dismal. Fucking failure of a season.

Nope.  Not here.  Nobody here got paid.  It’s everyone else.  Just not us.  Everyone else doing good is not our fault.  It’s not our fault we sucked.

Everyone else cheated.  Oh, and everyone else got calls but us because the refs sucks and hate us.

Or, we just didn’t make good hiring decisions.  Maybe it’s that.

Franklin, Shaw, and Strong were on the list, post-Mack.  Mack delayed, Franklin was (more or less) already hired, and it was down to Shaw/Strong.  Shaw did not want to leave Stanford.  Strong it is.

Sounds like an argument defending Mark Richt in 2015.

You either win a national champion or you don't. Sark hasn't. There's no success short of that worth celebrating or protecting.

What about Saban?

I remember reading posts from someone on one of the boards claiming that they used FlightAware to track a private jet from Tuscaloosa to Austin because Saban and wife were looking at houses in Austin.

MessageBoardGeniuses indeed.

We weren’t dropping the big bags like the SEC schools at the time were doing. Also the NCAA allowed for stipends after 2015. If all food and living expenses are paid for it’s not hard to go buy some clothes from Champs, Finish Line and Macys.

So we were doomed no matter what.

Is Austin so insufferable that he'd take a paycut for the NFL? I don't understand this move. If the Titans job had a collegiate equivalent it would be like Northern Illinois or Bowling Green. Downgrade!

pretty much.  Franklin would have been a good hire, not the disaster Strong was.  I think Shaw would have been not good.

What? Your “proof” is an instagram post of 19 year old shopping at a mall and you are claiming we were cheating off of that. They received cash under NCAA rules and had nothing to spend it on besides drinking, weed and clothes. It’s pretty common knowledge that we were not dropping bags in football.

Basketball is different story and most of that money was being funneled through shoe companies.

NFL job seems like a lot less work these days.  College is 24/7 all year job now.  They have contracts you don’t have to be constantly trying to keep your players happy and looking for new ones.

Does Lea not have enough skins on the wall to be considered? I know he’s rocking with a bunch of super seniors but he’s punching way above his weight class the last 2 years and those teams play tough.

He would still be making millions.  It won’t affect his quality of life or retirement plans.

Lea played at Vandy.  He has likely built 10+ years of goodwill with 24-25 performance.

Some of us were of the thought Sark had a pitch count on Wisner and that's why the early part of the game was called the way it was.

Then he’s a fucking retard. We barely escaped with a W. The coach is the #1 reason the game was so close.

I’d look to the NFL ranks for a new coach. The only college coaches who can excel at Texas are kiffin and lanning. They might not be interested.

Lanning isn’t leaving for any other college job. Lane would probably only jump for a few schools and Texas would definitely be one of them. He’s always talking about NIL disadvantages and this would finally give him everything he thinks he needs.

Aside from Pete Carroll, when has this worked?

You make a good point. I would argue that the college game has changed drastically in the last two years. It’s closer to being an NFL model than anything else.

NFL HCs want nothing to do with recruiting/NIL/portal landscape. They just want to coach, that's why they are in the NFL.
