This may be the most aggy take I’ve ever seen

It's about SOS my dude. Call it quality losses or quality wins or whatever you want. That's what this boils down to. Nobody in the group being talked about, Vandy, Utah, BYU, Michigan, wouldve fared any better than we did against our schedule. We are not being properly credited for it either.

Posted

You guys still talking about this?
We don't miss out on the CFP because of Florida.

We miss out because not only did we lose to Florida (a very dangerous team on a well-coached day)...

...but we also looked like SHIT in multiple wins.
Nobody knows what to expect from us. Either our Offense looks good and defense sucks, or our defense sucks and offense looks good.

Vegas wouldn't know what to do with us.

If the Georgia and Vandy 4th quarters were a little different, we might get in.

If the Kentucky and Mississippi wins were more convincing, we might get in.

But despite winning most of our games, we've looked like dog turd in the majority of our wins.

It'll be a small miracle if we get in.

We lost to fucking Florida. Two bottom dwellers took us to OT and we should have lost to MSU. I wouldn’t put money on our beating BYU or Utah or Michigan on a neutral field. Bitching about us not being in the playoffs is ridiculous

It's not their job to fare better against our schedule.  It's ours, and we failed to do so.  Nor can we pretend we'd have magically fared better against their schedules.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  Who cares.  Beat Florida.

Swap OSU with Minnesota and we are in the playoffs with a win against aggy. That's the problem here.

8 team playoff was the right move with pure seeding no auto bids.

12 seeds and auto bids is stupid.

16 no autos is also okay, but it's too many games without cutting a regular season OOC and adding maybe an end of year exhibition for the non playoff top 50 teams or something.

I was on board with the 8 team 25 years ago with the 12 team conferences.  play 10 conf games and 2 OOC.

the superconferences screwed this all up because you can game the system with the schedule(see aggy this year).

2027 and 2029 we have UGA, Bama, ND.  sure we could win 3 of those but could lose all 3. meanwhile Tech with the 70th ranked schedule and loses to Arizona fucking State. is in.  they didn't beat all the teams they should beat.  Utah with the 50th ranked schedule and 2 losses is ahead of us.

even aggy's schedule is 15 or something while playing the dregs of the SEC and ND. Ole Miss played no one OOC and almost lost at home to Wazzu, should have lost to LSU and possibly the same Ark team we drilled.

they should just say the cut line is fewer than 3 losses and we'll pick the best 8 from there.  then everyone knows the score.  our SOS will always be good enough with a decent P4 and 2 others and there will always be arguments.  we are out with 3 losses no matter what, as was Bama last year, due to the necessity for the committee to include other Big 12 and ACC teams and even a 2 loss ND(with a 27th SOS this year) in the mix.  G5 just makes it worse.

G5 can get fucked at this point, IMO.  they can have their own 8 team playoff.

maybe these last 2 years are outliers but I'll believe it when I see it that a 3 loss non conf champ makes the top 11 in the super conference era because they rank by number of losses.

don't lose 3 games regardless of who they are to.

I guess SOS means fuck all to everyone. When the playoffs start we will have two losses on the road to the #1 and #2 teams in the country and we will have wins over two playoff teams in the field, which will be the most in the country. And we will own 3 top 15 wins, also the most in the country. But we will be out, why, because we were stupid enough to schedule OSU. Had we scheduled Minnesota or Michigan State, we would be easily in the field. That is the problem.

Head to Head should mean more than it does. Miami should be ahead of ND , Bama should be ahead of UGA. Texas should be ahead of both OU and Vandy. I don't give a fuck about eye test or any other subjective bs. On the field results should take precedence. It was settled on the field. We have 2 bad losses. How in the fuck can OU and Vandy not be hammered for losing badly to such a flawed team?

The only ones in favor of G5 inclusion are lawyers, the people who pay lawyers, and the conferences who *might* have to pay damages.  Otherwise, it's a waste of a playoff slot.

Then they need to account this year for our game against OSU. Let's boil this down, we will have losses to the SEC (#2 in the country) and BIG champion (#1 in the country) and wins over 3 top 15 teams and two playoff teams (that wouldve done worse against our schedule). Meanwhile BYU will have zero wins worth a fuck and same with Utah. We should 100% be in IF either OU or Bama stumble. You have to weigh the SOS and not just be some retarded parrot that says 3 losses knocks you out.

they will never not rank by losses. they even fixed the Texas Michigan issue they had mistakenly set themselves up for because of it.

anyway, we took the 3rd loss and so we are out.  it is funny aggy bitched enough that they will not have Bama and UGA in the same season ever.

We don't deserve to be in the playoffs with the way we have played all season. That being said, I think the SEC gets five teams in and our best chance to sneak into that group is for us to win and Bama and Vandy to lose (both highly likely).

I guess it gets tricky if Bama loses and Vandy wins. In that scenario, Bama will likely drop below us but does the committee keep Vandy ahead of us?

H2H only matters if you have the same number of losses. it does matter a lot more than SOS when there is same number of losses.  top 12 or top 25 wins matter very little.

This.  I don't think the debate is as much about "we should have beat Florida", "we don't pass the eye test", "this team isn't consistent enough to make a run".  All of this is true.

The takeaway is there is absolutely no fucking reason to play an SEC schedule and a top tier out of conference team we have a 40% - 60% chance of beating in any given year because the committee is never going to stop grouping teams by and "counting" losses.

We absolutely need to replace those games with Power 4 Opponents we have a 65-80% chance of beating in any given year.

Think about it this way:

Where would be ranked right now if we beat OSU and otherwise have the same record?   Probably #8.

Where would be ranked right now if we played Syracuse and had same record?  Probably #8.

There just isn't material upside to schedule hard games OOC when you already are guaranteed to play top 10 teams in conference.

Dude give it a rest. Unless the score is 52-14 or something and they just absolutely dismantle a mediocre aggy then there's nothing to talk about. Texas doesn't pass the eye test for anyone. They have looked like SHIT for the majority of the season with some flashes of brilliance.

Even last week they only put together one complete half of football. The first half was fucking embarassing on defense.

Texas won’t blow aggy out because sark is a pussy, he will “take the points” like so many bitch about on here instead of growing some balls and trying an onside kick after a TD like Kirby did. You can’t fuckstomp people with an unreliable team being an analytical bitch that gets conservative in big moments. We should have went two minute offense against Kentucky, miss st and arky the whole fucking game and tried to score 100. That’s hyperbole but the point is if Texas needs to dominate somebody…count on something else and you won’t be let down. Next year is the year though, I’m pretty sure.

Absoluely.  Fine print for low IQs.

An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee's analysis to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.

I want to emphasize that the realization of this fact by the masses is the only reason I still think we have a shot this year if a couple of upsets happen (and why Michigan clearly in no matter what if they beat OSU).   The networks WANT games like Texas/Ohio State, OU/Michigan.  The SEC and BIG want to sell that inventory to the networks for Big $$.  If it becomes clear that despite the "strength of record" BS, the committee will ignore and group losses, this high end OCC inventory ceases to exist, then everyone loses $$.   So if we win there will be pressure internally on members (networks + BIG/SEC commissioners).

Obviously - I have no doubt Sankey is taking this into account as he's negotiating playoff expansion.   This is why despite Sankey being publicly opposed, I won't be surprised at all if we end up with expansion at 24 and something like 4 SEC, 4 BIG, 2 B12, 2 ACC, 1 Group 5 Auto qualifiers and the rest open.

Top 8 get a bye top 2 SEC, 2 BIG get auto byes (TBD remainder of byes).  And then that would set up "Championship weekend" in the SEC and BIG to be 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5 for the remaining 2 auto qualifier spots.

3 losses and out would be a travesty if Texas looked like a playoff team from game 2 until now. but Texas has only looked like a play off team for parts of games and not for one entire game let alone several in a row. that 98.6% chance of losing to MSU is FUCKING crazy. I don't care how talented Florida is, they are utter dog shit and they whipped ass that saturday. Georgia ran train on us the fourth quarter and we aren't even talking about the scrubs we didn't destroy, Kentucky or a terrible first half against Arky (which I actually don't think meant much). our narrative was sealed early and we never turned the tide.  had we just dominated our schedule except tOSU and a freak loss on the road in a tight game against Fla and then lost by 4 to Georgia, we'd be ahead of a few more 2 loss teams NOW and a two score win over A&M might be enough.

everyone is saying 3 losses, but this team isn't convincingly better than several one and two loss teams with this resume, but there is a resume with 3 losses where the committee is confronted with the fact that this Texas team is salty and could beat the shit out of anyone not tOSU or Georgia.  but no one thinks that about this Texas team.

I think they mainly changed conf champ get bye's to top 4 overall get bye's not because of what happened with us as the 5 but because AD's were saying what is the advantage to scheduling big time OOC game if I only get a bye by winning the conf.

now there is a small chance winning a big time OOC game gets you a bye but if they just rank by loss column what is the point.

Tech at 5 is a good indicator.  they are #5 with one loss to #20 ASU.  they played a 2-9 Pac 12 left behind Oregon State, have a SOS of 70, yet they are #5 because they only have a 1 in the loss column.  I could make a case they should be just ahead of Bama or even behind Bama with the #6 SOS.  it is about the loss column and it always will be.

Tech at 5 should be a red flag but hidden by the fact that 1-4 are Big Ten/SEC.  I would submit Indiana at 4 is a yellow flag given their SOS at 49 and OOC of ODU, Kennesaw, Indiana St, but tOSU's is 46

You're all going to feel really silly next year when beating Ohio State in Austin while losing on the road to Tennessee and aggy helps us make the playoff. The Georgia loss put us well behind all the others. If we had kept it close, we don't fall that much and beating aggy would make things still possible. We lost to a playoff team badly. That's what is hurting us and not losing to Ohio State back in September which didn't hurt our chances until we then lost to a bad Florida team. And even through all of that, we never looked like a team that should make the playoff. If we had destroyed Vandy and barely lost to Georgia we would not have fallen so far. What I'd like to see if us blow aggy the fuck out and then see where the committee ranks us.

System is flawed. It doesn’t matter if you have good wins, bad wins, good losses, or bad losses, none of it matters. All that matters to the committee of geezers is to lose as little as possible. Does it matter if you played any quality opponent all fuckin year? Nope sure doesn’t. Yes Texas shouldn’t have to lost to Florida, that is true. It’s also true if Texas schedules Minnesota and beats them week 1, Texas is still in the playoffs with that Florida loss. The whole process of selecting 12 teams and trying to pretend all of these conferences are somewhat equal is a complete circus. Then on top of all that, you give an auto bid to a fuckin G5 school so they can have the privilege of giving a real team some added practice for the sake of making College Football a little more like College Basketball. Texas should not only never schedule a blue blood out of conference game ever again, they should honestly just move to the fucking Sun Belt and play for the G5 auto bid, or just go independent and play the bottom of every conference like Notre Dame. Rant over.

Posted

There actually was a 3 loss team that was in the playoffs last year, and we faced them first round. To be fair they won their conference though, so it was an auto bid. I still think getting to that 10 win threshold means more to the committee than a 3 on the loss column. If a 10-2 SEC team makes it to the CCG and loses, they are still easily in the playoffs at 10-3.

auto bids are different. they also said if you make the conf champ game you very likely don't get punished. one of the reasons SMU made it over Bama last year plus "surprise" loss column SMU 2/bama 3.

we are discussing number of losses before the CC games.  they also can't really consider CC games much because "another surprise!"...Notre Dame doesn't have a 13th data point for you old schoolers(aka a CC).

ha. that ND loss to NI was an all timer.  they finished 6th in the MAC 4-4 and it was at ND.  they could have lost an additional game even(say Louisville) with that one and still made it because they would have only had 2 losses.

the 3rd loss is what is keeping us out.  if we lose to OSU, aggy, and Georgia instead of OSU, Georgia, and UF we are still out.  it doesn't matter who the 3rd loss is to.

I'm telling you, that Florida loss is so bad the committee will scoff at us. Even if we road grade aggy by 90. UF will keep us out, and if by some weird happenstance and they do allow a 3-loss team in, it won't be us, brand or no brand unless Arch and co go scorched earth, and only then would the committee give us a pass for the UF loss due to stupidity of the OL and Arch still on that learning curve. Regardless, I don't think anything other thsn divine intervention is getting us in.

They'll only be too happy to fuck us over, and they will laugh about it as a punchline amongst themselves to their dying day, how they "fucked mighty-Texas over."

It's just like the old days of the old Cotton Bowl Committee fucktards who got sick of Royal winning the SWC every year, meaning that Texas was automatically in the Cotton Bowl.

I hope for the chaos that comes when more SEC teams than just us get the shaft by the CFP committee, and Sankey drags them into accepting his demands for X number SEC slots in the CFP, or the SEC and Big Slow Ten (presumably) will leave the NCAA, take their millions of viewers/ratings with them, and make their own league. That way, the NCAA's CFP becomes nothing more than a meaningless football-NIT, with no viewers, and the NCAA/CFP can go suck it.
