IEA Sees Drone Strikes Weighing on Russia Oil-Processing Till Mid-2026 - Bloomberg

"The impact from Ukrainian drone strikes will suppress Russia’s refinery processing rates until at least mid-2026, the International Energy Agency says in its latest monthly oil-market report... '

Previously, we had assumed a normalization of refining activity as we approached year-end but now embed a more cautious outlook,' the Paris-based agency said in a report on Tuesday. The IEA currently sees Russian processing rates at just under 5 million barrels a day through June 2026, and a recovery toward 5.4 million barrels a day later, with the outlook to be revised as more information becomes available. '

The increasingly widespread and significant Ukrainian drone campaign against Russian oil refineries and infrastructure' has so far cut the nation’s crude processing by an estimated 500,000 barrels a day, the agency said...

With the drone strikes weighing on refinery runs, Russia raised its crude exports in September to 5.1 million barrels a day, the highest since May 2023, according to the IEA. Still, the nation’s oil-export revenues declined to a three-month low of $13.4 billion, the agency estimated.

The decline came as Russia’s crude-supply revenues, which rose $200 million month-on-month, were more than offset by a $440 million drop for oil-product exports, the report said. According to the IEA calculations, Russian fuel supplies to other countries in September reached 2.4 million barrels a day, the lowest in a decade, excluding April 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic."

I was told there would be no math..., but ~90%(?) of Russia's refineries have been hit and it's only taken ~9% of their daily processing volume offline? I realize that they haven't completely leveled every refinery that has been attacked, but only 500k bbls/day offline seems low to me.

Either way-

I think its an average, because basically what is happening is that a refinery gets hit, is down for a period of time (days or weeks in most cases?) until fixed and begins processing again. and then Ukraine eventually hits it again.

The refinery targeting campaign seems to be ramping up, but agreed, MOAR. Load up 25 flamingos and hit all the refineries at once.

Spoiler

President Donald Trump on Thursday called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ahead of planned talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as they seek an end to the invasion of Ukraine.

Trump first confirmed the call in a post on Truth Social Thursday: "I am speaking to President Putin now. The conversation is ongoing, a lengthy one, and I will report the contents, as will President Putin, at its conclusion. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

The call precedes a meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the White House on Friday, during which the two world leaders will discuss whether Ukraine should receive long-range Tomahawk missiles, which would mark a significant escalation in the conflict with Russia.

Trump last week said he had given Putin an ultimatum to either hold serious peace talks with Ukraine or the U.S. president would consider giving Ukraine the missiles, which Zelensky has long petitioned to obtain.

Russian officials, including former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, have warned that should Ukraine obtain the Tomahawk missiles, it would "end badly for everyone" and destroy relations between Washington and Moscow.

This is a breaking news story. Updates will follow.

Rubio will probably tell us that, while Trump did have to promise to blow Putin at the next G-8, he held firm on not having to stroke his balls.

Advantage Alpha Trump.

One other thing - if the remaining refineries/operations have to somehow boost their output/throughput, that seems like a recipe for long-term wear and tear.

Yeah, well, they won't break down from wear and tear if they're already blowed up.

Pretty sure I've posted it before and pretty sure it was in this thread.

And I'll post it again if I get to see some more drones go down this way.

"Until mid-2026..."

Why?  Seems all trends suggest it'll continue to only get worse.  Worse until Russia loses the war.

Until at least mid-2026.

I think they are counting on Russia not being able to sustain that much destruction and having to do something (come to the negotiating table or just leave).  The Russian people will tolerate a shitload, but if this campaign keeps up for another month as we really get into winter, I don't see how something won't break in their society - it would mean a shutdown on heating, on transportation, on food distribution, on electricity in general.  They have to be running low on parts, and the people who can make these repairs have got to be stretched thin.

Russia doesn't appear to have much in the way of buffers (national reserves) that they can easily tap to replace all of the lost fuel/refining/transportation, and Ukraine keeps on selectivity hitting targets that seem to be putting pressure on a lot of different places. Maybe they leave a refinery alone but hit vulnerable pumping stations and pipelines that feed to and distribute from that refinery, so for all intents and purposes, it's out of commission, etc.

There's a definite grand plan going on. Ukraine has cut off that Russian group in the north and have slaughtered would-be armored reinforcements. They seem to be working on the fuel depots in the south (and the lines that feed them).

And the one rail line that feeds Crimea/southern areas under Russian occupation on the landlocked side is apparently out of commission from what's been said - it's not far from Ukrainian lines, and the Ukrainians apparently tracked what was shipped across it so they knew when fuel cars were going to be run down it.  They did something to stop a train full of fuel tankers and other military supplies and then took the engine and the tank cars out with drones. Because it's close to the lines and within range of a shitload of drones, the Russians are wary of bringing in heavy equipment to clear the line, so the line is basically out of action, leaving the rail line alongside the Kerch bridge the only rail supply line into Crimea.

And supposedly Belarus is struggling and Putin and Co. are not quite abandoning it, but it's not getting much love, and the economy is in the shitter and things are happening there.

So much is going on right now.
