FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Greg Schiano is stepping down from his position on the New England Patriots' coaching staff, citing a "need to spend more time on my faith and family."

Schiano, whose hire had never been officially announced by the club, announced his decision Thursday in a joint statement with coach Bill Belichick.

"This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family," Schiano said. "I don't want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities."

Schiano was hired by the Patriots less than two months ago, although the team never specified what his role would be. It was widely assumed he would play a lead role on defense as the club replaced playcaller Brian Flores, who was hired as Miami Dolphins coach after the season.

sketchy as fuck.

weird story. Seems like he has some personal issues, either his own or a family member.

The whole Penn St connection is still hard to understand what really happened with Sandusky. McQueary says that another assistant told him that Schiano saw something with Sandusky but both the other assistant and Schiano deny it. Schiano is a no-win situation with it. If he says he did see something, he gets slammed for not helping a kid. If he really didn't see something, no one believes him.

I'm gonna say it's the sauce or some other kinda substance abuse. We had great defenses his first two hears and then all the sudden we were garbage last year. You don't all the sudden get THAT bad at your job.

He did it at Rutgers but it was once he was coaching in the NFL and having millionaires do it that people got pissed.

He did as a coach of TB against the giants.  I saw nothing wrong with it. TB down by 7 and Eli is in victory formation. There’s no rule that you have to accept victory formation from the defensive side.  It’s football not golf.  Giants got pissed that TB wouldn’t give up in the final minute.  An offensive line should be able to protect their Qb who is kneeling.  Stop blitzing us!
