Late Night Political Talk Shows

RPM

Recommended Posts

Somebody brought up in the Trump thread that we should have a dedicated thread for that. I agree, no point clogging up a particular thread with political monologues. Let's clog shit up here.

Pound for pound, Seth Myers is the clear leader. Sure Jon Oliver and Bill Maher have more depth, but Myers lands more punches with A Closer Look. His writing skills from Weekend Update shine and he's got a good research staff.

Kind of impressed with Jim Jefferies weekly show. Not a format I would have expected for him, but his interviews are really good.

I'm sure Samantha Bee is better than all of them, but I just can't stand to listen to her voice. It was the same when she was on The Daily Show. #itsnotyouitsme

Anyway, post your videos here.

If y’all haven’t checked out “Patriot Act with Hasan Minaj” on Netflix, do yourself a favor and go binge and catch up.

It’s a half hour show released weekly on Sunday and it’s hilarious and very smart.

He covers stuff that the usual political shows don’t cover - the Indian election, the worldwide influence of subversive streaming hip hop on totalitarian regimes, the fucked up pharmacy benefits manager system, the student loan racket, censorship in China, Big Oil, the Amazon effect on almost everything in American life - seriously interesting topics with a unique and funny perspective.

Here’s the one on the Indian Election.

I knew next to nothing about Indian politics and came away from watching this episode both fascinated and horrified and yet strangely comforted.

We ain’t the only ones fucking our own faces.

All of these shows are terrible and not funny. Late night comedy used to be good about a decade ago when it wasn’t 100% political and so biased.

John Oliver is close to being decent (he has his moments) but even he has turned Comedy Central with so much of his content being the democrat party line lately.

I will grant you that Trump and his sound bites give them a million times more content than past presidents but if you don’t think there is a consistent bias with each of these late night talk shows you’re blinded.

Yes, let's all attack bias toward things such as truth and humor, which are inextricably intertwined. All the while, you support not releasing the Mueller Report in an unredacted form to anyone.

Now, that is the truth and quite humorous.

Haven't watched Hasan's show. He was really good on TDS. Didn't they pull one of his shows on the middle east and Islam?

It wasn’t about Islam, it was about the Saudi Royal Family and government. Netflix pulled it in Saudi Arable because he criticized Saudi Arabia, MBS, and unequivocally said that MBS ordered the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

The SA government actually threatened to arrest him or some shit and threatened Netflix.

Here’s the Saudi Arabia episode.

Until I’m convinced that this mueller report isn’t a giant smear campaign with that has actual evidence of working with Russia to win the election I will continue to believe that a full underacted report is unnecessary.

But sure keep believing that there is no bias in late night talk shows because I don’t trust politicians with classified information that is irrelevant to the cause for the actual investigation.

Also, this is not the mueller report thread.

How would you be convinced of that without reading the report?

most of the comedy from these shows comes from real clips they're commenting on.  they're not manipulating them, they're showing them and offering jokes/commentary.  a lot of these clips are perfectly hilarious on their own.  when elected officials act like hilarious buffoons, they will produce funny clips and that's what's happening.  if you're mad that the hosts of these shows are enjoying it too much and laughing and pointing at the stupidity, well i don't know what to tell you.  when dems act silly, they do the same stuff, but there isn't one in the oval office, so they don't have enough material for that.

in this clip he gives biden and beto a hard time.  when it's warranted, it happens.  it's not all bias and conspiracy.  aggies write the best aggie jokes, and trump writes the best trump jokes.

If you walk around in clown shoes publicly babbling mean-spirited nonsense, continuously shitting all over yourself and everything around you, but think that others are biased for pointing that out consistently, it may be you that has the problem.

Late night comedy shows make jokes about what is topical and relevant. As that pertains to politics, their jokes focus on whoever is currently in office. There wasn’t as much with Obama because he was pretty boring from a comedic standpoint, but Bush and Clinton provided tons of material. They have done this for as long as I can remember. It’s not bias when they do the same thing to everyone.

Trump ruined late night TV.

Yep. No matte what side of the isle you're on...it gets repetitive and boring to start their shows the same shit over and over again.  Yes I get that Trump has earned it, and he gives them tons of material...but put some fucking thought into it, and try to be funny without shitting on the same guy day after day, night after night.

No, but doing it every single day to start your show get's old.  And yes, it's pretty obvious that 99% of these shows are liberal leaning.  That's not even debatable.  Like saying Fox News is super far right leaning.  There's no debate.

to add (for those that don't watch last week tonight), he typically starts the show recapping the news of the week, which yes, often involves politics, and therefore trump - but a good chunk of his show covers one unrelated topic, which is rarely straight political.

this was enjoyable from a few weeks ago:

Nice strawman. Nobody is arguing they aren’t biased. Of course they’re biased. And they’re under no obligation to be unbiased. They’re just trying to balance out the fact that Trump has an entire network that is biased in his favor 24-7.

That and the constant stream of lies and horrible behavior. No one needed daily reports on previous presidents because they weren’t all corrupt buffoons whose primary motivations were graft and being a dick.

Fox had to manufacture controversies about Obama (coffee salute, feet up , tan suit, flag pin).

I grew up with late night tv with the Carson days. It was very good way to end a long day with some good entertainment. Now, I can pretty much get on Media Matters, or daily kos, and skip late night altogether. It's all the same now.

If people don’t think late night tv didn’t eviscerate democrats then you either weren’t alive during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal or weren’t paying attention or are being dishonest.

“Wholesome” Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” absolutely savaged Clinton nightly and he was particularly vicious and disgustingly misogynistic towards Monica.

John Oliver actually did a bit on it a few weeks ago.

When presidents lie, say dumb shit, act like pieces of shit, get linked with porn stars, say some more dumber shit, surround themselves with gigantic morons who say dumb shit, and generally run around like they should be traveling with the Barnum and Bailey Circus, guess what?

COMEDIANS ARE GOING TO USE YOU FOR MATERIAL AND LAUGHS!

Everyone tries to work smart not hard. Late night talk show hosts are going after the low hanging fruit.

And there must be some merit in it - their ratings seem to be doing okay.

SNL went for the jugular.

Just viewed it.  I didn't see anything about him sneaking his hand on the little girls or teens.  Seems like it gave him a pass as just too touchy feels kinda guy, out of it on that topic.

Watch his right hand.  Compare it to the right hand of the lady in pink.

"Pound for pound, Seth Myers is the clear leader."

I would hardly say Seth Meyers is the clear leader.

I enjoy watching the different late night comedians and seeing their different takes on the constant flow of material coming out of Washington. I think it's interesting to see how different comedians craft different jokes on the same subject. Any one of them might have the best joke about any particular current event on any given day.

Seth is great. A Closer Look is a copy of the Weekend Update but from SNL. It's what he does best and that's cool. It's always good for a laugh (which I haven't been able to say about SNL in a long time). His other bits aren't that great like Jokes Seth Can't Say or Ya Burnt.

Colbert couldn't transport his character and schtick from Comedy Central. It's been interesting to watch his evolution from when he first took over Late Night until now. Trump has been a godsend for him. While Seth Meyers is great, Colbert can be brilliant. He's grown into the standup role doing the monologue and he can still do a desk piece as well as anybody. He's got physical comedy chops, can work with props, and makeup, and do impressions, and sing. And he's great at improv. (That also helps when he's interviewing interesting guests.)

When he used the Keebler elf cookie to represent Jeff Sessions, that was hysterical. His Steve Mnuchin impression is a riot. I hope he brings back the Hungry for Power Games character. That bit was awesome. When Trump was ranting about the caravan and Stephen would dance while Jon Batiste and Stay Human (best band on late night tv) played Caravan? Oh yeah, he can dance too.

I like both Meyers and Colbert but Colbert is on a different level. They both make me laugh but Colbert can give me great big side-splitting laughs. He's a genius. He's putting on a variety show while Seth is doing the same bit night after night. It's good, but there's a reason Colbert is on an hour earlier.

Maher is still my favorite. I like Colbert but I feel like he crosses the line at times. I just shake my head not believing he said that. But, truthfully what is crossing the line during these Trump years? Trump is a joke and unfortunately we’re all suffering.

Or Trump is just a retard who is easy to make fun of.

Also, isnt it weird how there are no funny republican comedians/personalities? Nobody from the right ever whimsically points out how misguided and hilarious it all is. All you get from those folks is a bunch of frothing at the mouth, angry, just straight up hateful crap.

I wonder why that is.

Conservatives aren't funny. Their humor is mostly about making fun of people who are different from them. Take the example of Trump mocking a disabled reporter. It's just petty and mean.

Thanks--this episode (only one I've seen) just really depressed the hell out of me.  Showing that the World's Democracies are under attack is real difficult to tackle with humor.

WTB nailed it, Conservatives can't laugh at themselves. They prefer schadenfreude. Liberals are at least willing to point the focus back on themselves for a laugh. How many Bernie Sanders jokes have you heard from liberals? Now how many Ted Cruz jokes have you heard from conservatives? It wasn't always like this.

Why do they need to balance that out when there are already at least two networks that are biased against him 24-7?  And as far as political humor being a staple of late night talk shows since forever, yes it has been but it has never been personal before now.  The way Jay Leno and Johnny Carson made jokes about presidents were entirely different from the way Stephen Colbert and all the other late night twat show hosts of today go at Trump.

they care about laughs and ratings.  when a topic gets them those, they will always concentrate on that.  it has nothing to do with balance.

If Leno and Carson were in their prime, they'd be skewering Trump, too.  He's a moron who, literally, says stupid, laughable shit every single day.  Just because your myopia blinds you to his idiocy, doesn't mean it isn't there.  Constantly.

No, they would be needling his doings in a general Washington D.C. joke like way.  They would not go after him personally.  Go back and watch Leno and Carson.  They made fun of every president but they did it in a way where you could not tell their personal political feelings.  None of the late night hosts today even make the slightest effort at all to do this and anyone that thinks different is either blindly partisan or an absolute idiot.
