I like mini humbuckers, but you aren't going to sound like Slash through them. Very bright.

He wouldn't sound like Slash if Slash handed him his own guitar. Hell, I wouldn't.   Feeling like Slash when you look down at your Les Paul?  THAT is attainable.

Isn’t that the Neil Young trick - buy a mini humbucker les Paul and replace them with p90s?
A good set of p90's can't be beat. Turn the volume down on the guitar, and they are so beautiful and articulate. You're grinning ear to ear. Turn it up, and pure raunch. Best pickups ever.

100% this.  I was going to write something snarky about my husband's playing, but I chose not to.  He wouldn't know a humbucker from a p90 if you asked him.  I just learned what the hell you guys are talking about.  Now, he might get into it but I have no idea.  Hell, I'm kind of excited about trying it out.

It's a $700 Gibson that pretty much looks like something Slash would play.  It will sound good.  If your husband gets good enough that the guitar is the difference between him sounding like Slash and somebody else, buy him a $4K Les Paul and congratulate him on being a badass guitar player.

Yep.  He's a badass scientist and does badass shit every day that I cannot disclose.  I'm in the same field.  Slash can't do what he does and he can't do what Slash does.  But, we can have some fun along the way.

Tell me about John's guitar here:

Definitely an Epiphone Casino in the rooftop concert. Epiphone gave each of the Beatles a sunburst Casino. John and George eventually sanded the finishes off. Paul kept his stock.

There have been myriad reissues of this guitar. You can get a solid reissue for about $500. But if you want one like the Beatles (exact same specs, type of wood, etc.) you’re likely to spend about $1000.

Also, it has dogear p-90 pickups.

The chrome vs not chrome humbuckers on les pauls is mostly a cosmetic thing. They also make humbuckers without covers where one coil is white and one is black - they’re referred to as zebra humbuckers. Chrome humbuckers are sometimes referred to as PAF, which more accurately refers to the first models of humbuckers in LP’s that were marked “patent applied for” on the back (and were covered).

And the dog ear P-90 is only different from the normal P-90s because of the kind of guitar they're mounted in.  The dog ears were added in so that you could add them to a hollow body guitar.  The dog ears provide a place for the screws to go into the top.  On a solid body, you don't need them because there's a screw that goes through the pickup right into the body.

I really got into the Casinos for a while, but I still don't have one...yet.  Anyhow, some extra credit because I love the Beatles Casinos.

I got a goldtop about a year ago.  It's pretty cool, but the only sound I've been able to get out of it that I love is through a cranked bassman.  Everything else has been fine, but not what I'd consider "great" sounding.  I could stand to put it through it's paces a bit more though.

What is going on with the pickups here?

I've tried to learn the part at 1:20-1:40 in this video many times. It's one of those loose, almost sloppy Page riffs that is so difficult to reproduce. It's like it doesn't fit in the time signature or something. And this being a Page-produced track, you have to block out God knows how many guitar overdubs he's got going on.

In pron related news, I don't care what you think - this Strat is fucking awesome.

I actually like that.  Fits right in with the late 80s aesthetic he's going for.  Ahh.  The old Strat HMs...

Ah, I wasn't making that connection. Still not really my thing but it definitely makes more sense to me now. And some of his more recent stuff definitely has an 80s rock sound.

I'm kind of scared I might buy the Ryan Adams Strat. I'm an unapologetic fanboy in the first degree. I bought that goofy Prisoner box set with the lights and figurines and hidden record. I've scheduled trips to other cities based on him being in that town. I even once drunkenly bid on one of his signed guitars he donated to a charity auction and ending up winning the damn thing (though I actually got a good deal and made money off of it when I decided to sell it last year).

So my dream vision would be to take that Strat and mod it as follows:

Rio Grande "Dual Calibrated" pickups setup with their Muy Grande at the bridge, reverse wound/polarity Halfbreed in the middle, and Vintage Tallboy at the neck.

Upgrade the electronics and hot rod it with treble bleed.

Maybe - replace the stock pickup covers, tone knob, and pickup selector knob with cream or off-white colored ones.

Lol.  That didn't take long. Two posts?:

Hypothetical:

You find two MIM Standard Telecasters, basically identical, same color and style, in near mint condition, for the same price, only one is early 2000s and the other is only a few years old...which one would you buy?

The one that felt better.
