Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

National media seems to see that it's less an Arch issue than it is an OL and scheme issue, but Texas fans you do you.  (No, this in no way implies Arch has no culpability here.)

I just cancelled my subscription to the Athletic about seven days ago. It's been garbage for years but every time I'd cancel, they'd offer me a 75% discount. They did that this time too, and I said fuck you. Good call.

All this makes it all the more glorious when we beat the shit out if a ridiculously overrated OU team coached by a roided out cro magnon dipshit. Will be the foundation for The Legend of Arch

  My cut ups?

Anyway, I am going to move away from the Florida game for a bit because it looks like the lack of protection from that game is clouding up my point. Which was Arch isn't seeing the field. The play I was talking about was this one. We get to it from many different formation but essentially the slot guy runs a deep post and then they bring a dig underneath. Everyone keeps saying the problem is you are reading long to short and that forces you to hold the ball but that just isn't true. When you walk up to the line the coverage already kinda tells you what to look for. So for this play you are reading the safety's reaction, and it doesn't take that long to get it. If the safety starts backpedaling for the post we immediately throw the dig. If the safety stays flat we look for the post. Now here is the same play in the same game. Watch how each QB handles it.

This is Manning vs Georgia last year. If you are reading that safety you know immediately after the snap that the dig will be available.

Now here is Quinn in the same game vs the same defense running the same play. Quinn recognizes the safety bailing and hit the underneath dig accordingly.

Let's fast forward to this year vs Ohio State. We run the same play. At the snap they roll to what looks to be Cover 3 with the safety digging for depth. So you should know immediately to look for that dig. Especially with the field side corner squatting, and looking for work in the flat. If Manning hits that dig when his back foot hits his drop it would be perfect, but instead he stares down the post, hops forward another two steps, and then lets it go.

Now lastly this is Caldwell. It's hard to see the field because they cut to the penalty but you can see the slot runs off the safety. Caldwell gives it a quick peek. Hid cue tells him to look for the dig, and he throws it on the break.

The point is that just because there is a set structure to how you read plays, like long to short. It doesn't mean that's a hard rule or that we should be standing back there looking at the play for 3 or 4 seconds. Almost all plays have a deep option, but the read can be made to come off it really quickly like this play here. Arch just doesn't do that. This what I mean when I say he gets himself in trouble. We run this play every game and I have never seen him hit this dig.

National Media- First game what is wrong with Arch Manning. Second game Arch Manning has the yips. Third game Arch Manning is a bust. Fourth game Arch Manning is back baby! Fifth game Arch Manning's O-line sucks.

Those are accurate descriptions of how Arch played in those games. He has been improving in the last couple of games, which was rarely the case for your boy, QE. Quinn played his best in his freshman year and then regressed pretty much every year. I rather have my QB go the opposite direction. Let's see how Arch does the rest of the year before we call him a bust. We gave QE 3 years, and he ended up going from a potential #1 pick to a 7th round pick. You think Arch will do worse?

Not me! I contend that the OL sucks and it isn't helping Arch but also Arch sucks and isn't helping his OL.

You know what? The Oline sucks. The dude running the Oline sucks. The coach allowing the dude running the Oline to suck also sucks. The scout team responsible for simulating the opponent so the Oline can be prepared sucks. The grad assistant responsible for cutting up the tape for the Oline to study sucks. Arch will figure out a way to stop sucking here pretty soon. You wanna know why? His uncles aren't going to let him besmirch the family name. They were pretty hands off but they are going to be breaking down film with him the rest of the season I bet. I expect a miraculous turnaround.

The NFL is hot opinions and measurables my dude. Lets remember Jamarcus Russell was the 1st pick overall and Tom GOAT Brady almost didn't make the league. Also, you think his best year was his freshman year? Ridiculous. Literally zero statistics back that up. Lol

The national media humiliated themselves by setting up this huge story of another Manning entering the game and taking over college football on day 1. They ranked us number 1 based mostly on that. Look at all the players we lost last year, they didn't care.

They turn out wrong then they crucify Manning for not living up to their delusions. They're all geniuses, the sports writing guild. They had to be right in their predictions, so the problem can't be that they're wrong. And fucking stupid. All. The. Time.

Manning did not proclaim himself the greatest. He didn't ask for the whole God gives us another Manning to rule football narrative. He was an extraordinary prospect not the sure thing. He may still turn out to be exceptional, but that won't be on the moron schedule.

I like Manning the man. I want him to succeed. I don't think he's ready, but that's secondary to this point: the idiot sportswriter world created a huge circus only to have their tent catch fire because they didn't know what they were doing.

They're the kings of Idiot World.

My last word on Arch is, good luck and beat OU. Hook 'Em!

This is why I dislike talking heads sometimes. The play at the 10:30 mark where they go 5 wide. He is criticizing fans for saying get rid of the football and telling us how if he threw it that it would get picked off. Then Ian is talking about how it would be a really long throw. Meanwhile they are on the left hash, and the two receivers to the boundary are going to run a pick. The outside receiver runs a stick route and the inside runs a corner route picking his man. The stick route is wide open if Arch just hits him on his break. Ball would be out before the rush got home. I know these guys see that. I don't believe talking heads are always honest. I have seen text messages of them getting scolded by coaches, university officials, and players families and told to clean up their "opinions" the next show. They need to keep their access.

Again, this does not take away from the fact that the offensive line is atrocious. Just be honest in your criticism. The very play before they were honest when they said Arch could've hit the pick across the middle, but that was on a play where Arch was already successful. It feels a lot like some calls were made from some officials to say back off our boy.  I honestly think Arch will eventually figure it out, but the 180 from all the usual suspects in a single game is a bit curious. Film Guy even made it a point to say he has no connections. OK buddy. You got the All 22 as soon as the game was over but no connections.

You mean the play you called a "man-beater". The 3 verts and 2 stops, which is not a "man beater" and a pretty terrible route combo on 3rd and 8. Arch is looking to the 3 WR side and the stop is blanketed. Arch has not even put his back foot down in this picture and you can see him looking to the right.

image.png.aac264a43c63e99fb3cd0641bddbf3d4.png

You are probably talking about the backside WR with the DB standing flat-footed 4 yards off, but Arch would need to get to his 5th read there in under 2 seconds and I doubt it would be a 1st down anyway. Both stops are broken off prior to the sticks, which is straight out of the Greg Davis school of 3rd down offense. Neither will get a 1st down. This is not as bad as the cut-up you pissed on Arch for not hitting Wisner, when he is an obvious decoy and the play is a screen to Endries. You are going out of your way to be critical on these cut ups which is a complete 180 from your cut-ups last year.

Again with this shit. It's not a 5th fucking read. Where do you guys come off with this shit? You read where to go based on the coverage and the situation Codexx. You are 5 wide. You have trips to the field with 4 defenders. You have twins to the boundary with 3. The two verticals are going to take both safeties. So now what do you have left? A pick to your left and an out to your right. A QB should know where to go. The route is a quick hitter just short of the sticks with a pick. If the ball is there on time he can get the couple yards to get the first. You guys and your 5th read shit is getting infuriating. If you read every long route first, you would never get to any short route as they would all be complete by the time you cycled to them. This pick route is built into this play for a reason. It's expected to use it.

Again, if we were looking at this we would already be throwing it. Wingo is intentionally running at the defender responsible for the stick route. So if that defender wants to recover he has to get through Wingo.

Screenshot(14).thumb.png.b53d40b4da1e726e30483b6571f0dbf6.png

You can see it from here. Ball should be coming out and the DB would have to get through Wingo. This is well designed to get you a chance to pick up the play.

Screenshot(15).thumb.png.718087a423c881060c2d43d2e1ff5d53.png

Again, the DB responsible for the stick route is 5 yards off the man with Wingo crossing his face. The two talking heads, who noticed what was available on the play prior, are being disingenuous here. Most experienced QBs would make this throw and we wouldn't even think twice about it. Every week. All around the country. There are 3rd down plays where two of the receivers are running deep routes and the QB takes the snap and immediately fires on the underneath route. You guys act like its asking a lot. It's called a pre-snap read, and it's not illegal or weird to do.

I give up. You are going to do you. You think a QB can go sideline to sideline in 2 seconds, because the OL got whipped so be it. It is fvcking stupid. You calling anyone disingenuous after some the shit you put out here is amazing.  Ill reference the screen you criticized him on and the Wisner dump off when he isnt even in the play. We should all take a moment and think about this play design. You clear out the middle of the field with 3 verts from the inside WRs and run 2 stops short of the chains. I am guessing that is by design, since both receivers broke yards before the sticks. How there is not some kind of crossing route going under the clear out is beyond me.

What are you talking about sideline to sideline? It's 3rd and nine. If I asked every football fan in the US what is going to happen on 3rd and nine they would say the defense is going to dial up some pressure. That said any QB in this situation should be thinking the same, and calculating opportunities to get the ball out quickly. If you know you have a quick hitting pick available use it. Again, this kid will make this throw next year. He just isn't seeing it currently, and yes the OL getting whipped made it worse.

That would be great, especially if you can get access to the All-22 (that is probably tough). TV clips do not give you a full picture.

the 2 stop routes are 45-50 yards apart. They run outside opposite hashes. So yes, that is sideline to sideline if you are just reading the 2 stops to get the ball out quick. Neither are going for a 1st down and 1 is a likely pick 6 (to the right). Florida did not bring pressure, what the fuck are you talking about. Everything you just said is made up BS.

This year is way more PA deep shots. Sark was looking to take advantage of a QB that could threaten a defense deep. Big issue is nobody respects the run game. Hell, I do not even know what the focus of the run game is at this point. The OL cannot protect to get those PA shots off. Safeties are sitting back, because there is no reason to be quick to support the run game. Though outside of Mike Leach rising from the grave, I am not sure there is an offense that fits this OL. I just pray they improve and this comment looks stupid next weekend.

Yeah, PA doesn't work when you can't effectively run the ball.

The bigger issue for me is that it takes time with an OL that does not block well. Speaking more to this game in particular, where it was obvious the OL was struggling. As people have pointed out Sark's play book is a bit extreme. It is generally screen or deeper shots (Sark loves that Post/Dover concept and every defense knows it). Need to find some standard short/intermediate passing game. Anything requiring 3 seconds to run is going to be questionable vs decent DLs in the SEC. (Florida had more pressure in this game, than they had all season prior)

Again, you are either being willfully obtuse, or are just not even reading what I am saying. Imagine you are the QB. You motioned your receiver to the left and a man went with him. So now you know it's Cover 2 with man underneath or as us olds call it "man 2". As soon as you get that information in your head you should be working the pick play on the boundary. Why? Because the safety to that side is insignificant as he is too deep, and the pick play you have on is specifically designed to beat this EXACT coverage. That's how you play football. You don't "scan sideline to sideline". Sark put the motion in there to force them to declare man or zone so then his quarterback knows where his best chance of success is. Quit trying to make it like I'm doing something nefarious here. It's basic football. If he hits dude on the break, he only has to get two or 3 yards to get to the sticks with his man 5 yards off him. You take that chance. And I said a quarterback SHOULD expect pressure on 3rd and 9. I didn't say they brought a blitz. I will go back and find this same play in another game where the O-line holds up if it makes you feel better. Then when he doesn't see it there either what will you say?

Its not going anywhere. WR route is short of sticks, and the DB is flat footed over him and Wingo gets 0 rub on the play. Both sticks routes are dead.

I don't know shit, but I'm persuaded by @Thatguy

Many times, I've heard game analysts start a replay comment with, "QB Jones sees right away that the defense is in such and such. He knows there's pretty good chance he can hit Receiver Hayes in that spot vacated by..."

I've seen it over and over over the years. A million years ago, when I played a bit and watched, QBs were waiting for a guy to break open. Now, as you all know, the ball should be arriving when they break. It's a remarkable development as are so many other subtleties to the game now including the importance of a few feet in where a db sets up.

I've been wondering if Arch got in a habit of looking for the long ball in high school. He arrives here, and the focus seemed to be that he could hit those long passes that are so often open in our offense. Maybe it's ingrained that that is what he's expected to do. Just a muse.

Another thing that Thatguy's film takes substantiate is my observation that the play designs are actually good. Our problem has been executing something that shouldn't require extraordinary levels of skill.

You're not wrong - Arch should be should be releasing the ball by this point (the still above). He's not even looking that way. But I think the larger comment on this play call stands - 5 wrs should force the other team to defend as much space as possible. Texas leaves the middle of the field entirely open and makes the defense's job easier.

What's the saying, if you meet an asshole in the morning, that's too bad, but if you meet assholes all day, you're the asshole... If the whole design of that play was to go to the pick play, someone might want to mention that to Arch because he doesn't seen to be aware of it. If he misses a read every now and then, that's on Arch. If he misses it over and over, that's on Sark. Texas can't execute against any competent defense, which suggests Sark is the asshole in this situation.

The stop is dead. It is covered. He can throw it, but 90% here would bitch he threw a 5 yard route on 3rd and 8 even if you think the ball could get there before the DB, which is highly arguable. You 100% correct in the fact this is a really poor play design, which is a way bigger issue. There needs to be someone on some type of crossing route running to space to give the offense a chance to get a first down. Preferably, there would be a half field read with at least 2 short/intermediate routes. Having 2 short routes on opposite sides does not help. I really dont understand the idea of 3 verts with stops attached in that situation given the pass blocking issues. I am not sure all that matters, because the DL has beaten Stroh before Arch's gets his back foot down. Arch is going to have to throw immediately at the top of his drop and still going to take shot. This play was dead the moment it was called.

If he misses a read every now and then, that's on Arch. If he misses it over and over, that's on Sark.

It's all on Sark. After watching these film studies from different folks, it's clear that the OL isn't physical, not because they lack aggressiveness, but because their shitty technique and footwork don't even allow them to put themselves in position to go one on one with the defender. They're easily moved aside because they're already falling down without being touched after their first step. Sark should know what he's seeing and not put up with it.

As far as Arch is concerned, I agree that if Arch doesn't know what to look for pre-snap after being in Sark's system for two years, it's on the people teaching him what he should be doing. Sark should know where Arch is going to look before he calls the play, based on what the defense is doing. The OL is out of sync, and Sark is not in sync with his QB. He probably knows what Arch should look at, but has he asked Arch what he's going to look for in situations X, Y, and Z or does Sark just assume Arch will do what he expects?

What's the saying, if you meet an asshole in the morning, that's too bad, but if you meet assholes all day, you're the asshole... If the whole design of that play was to go to the pick play, someone might want to mention that to Arch because he doesn't seen to be aware of it. If he misses a read every now and then, that's on Arch. If he misses it over and over, that's on Sark. Texas can't execute against any competent defense, which suggests Sark is the asshole in this situation.

That's a fair position. I don't think Sark's prior QBs had this problem. Certainly, Ewers used his quick release and good reads to good effect, I believe.

How does that weigh in the balance of responsibility?

There's no excuse for the OL. That's all on coaching from recruiting to developing to fitting them to the offense we want to run. Purely in terms of judging the staff, there's a possibly fatal flaw from OL coach to OC to HC.

I feel differently, obviously, about the weight of responsibility for this QB's struggles to be placed on Sark. He's not absolved. Should Caldwell get to play and should he do much better, the delay in that decision would fall on Sark. I suspect that the dynamic of the whole team having to pick up the QB for so long is corrosive. Their faith in a coach whom they think is in error will also corrode.

I hate this for Arch. I really do.
