I think late in games like that the DBs start playing a little selfish, wanting to jump routes and make wow plays. Guilbeau is just dumb enough a player to do that. We saw 4 also have a terrible game trying to do that earlier this season.

I wouldn’t go that far with Guilbeau being selfish but who knows. He’s just not that good athletically or mentally. Arkansas and Aggie are going to pick on him the entire game.

It was a busted coverage by Guilbeau. Babers was a little perplexed by Guilbeau’s coverage on that play saying if no one comes into your flat area then carry the 1 receiver. I don’t know why he thought there was automatic safety help over the top.

Last year Baron made a big interception in a playoff game by recognizing the route tree quickly and carrying the only receiver to his side deep. Guilbeau just doesn't have it between the ears.

There's a big drop off from Baron and Makuba to this year's starters. Then throw in having to play Filsame, Williams, and Phillips in the 4th and it's a Mt Everest sized drop off.

I wouldn’t say there is big drop from Makuba to McDonald. Both are NFL guys. CB position is a big downgrade. Manny isn’t Baron. Guilbeau isn’t Manny from last year

Bobby has been running with the “top 3 safeties”, but let’s be honest about this. Filsaime is in the top 3, but he had a really rough game. The drop from Taaffe and McDonald to the next safety is a huge chasm. Derek Williams is a bit perplexing. I know injury was a legit, but he looks kind of lost out there. Very disappointing

I think time out of the saddle is the main reason for Derek. You can lose your edge. Filsaime is still learning so too early to draw conclusions with him. McDonald wasn't that good in coverage early in his career but you could see the upside.

The only reason I say that is because these things seem to happen late game. 3 quarters of fairly sound defense and then you magically lose focus. Of you can focus for 3 quarters you can focus for 4.

My hope is that with Taafe back, we have a lot fewer coverage busts, and I think that is quite possible.

I share your sentiment, and throw in Jelani as well, but at the same time have to wonder that part of the problem is that other players in the secondary rely too much on being spoon-fed what to do and where to be.

Guilbeau is gonna Guilbeau. That's a given.

Arch looked great.  Only saw a couple not good throws, one being the quick behind the LOS WR screen that was behind the receiver.  Excellent game.  even touch passes looked good and out sooner. better anticipation.

hopefully the OL can hold blocks reasonably against UGA because the short game is gonna be tougher with their athletes.  we will need to throw downfield against them.  would be nice for Baxter to have some type of resurgence game.

The depth this year is nonexistent in the secondary. Last year Williams was the opening day starter. McDonald became a legitimate player by around this time last year. The safety was always had 3-4 guys that were solid contributors. This year it like falling off a cliff after Taaffe and McDonald. Gavin Holmes would be starting this year at CB. 3 CBs last year that were solid. Not even 2 on the team this year

Now, with Arch, things seem to snowball for him one way or the other.  So the obvious answer is to give him a bunch of easy throws that can't get picked to get him going.  We did that almost exclusively in the first half, then we let him throw downfield a bit in the second half.  And it worked beautifully.

Paul Wadlington made this point in the IT post game show. He talked about how offense can build on itself, in this game all those quick game lateral throws force the pass rush to chase the play down outside, and the screens and other quick throws get the d-line thinking “what’s the point of busting our ass to get upfield when the ball is getting out so quick?” By midway through the third quarter when they are tired and not shooting gaps, Arch was able to work through his progressions and hit targets further downfield.

Yea, this has always been Sarks goal with those and he’s said as much. Have to hit/block them properly to make teams respect it though or his plan goes to shit

Guilbeau has maybe made one good coverage play in his entire career at Texas. He's okay in run support though.

I can't decide which DB is dumber on our back end - Guilbeau or Filsaime.

What's funny is on the first sideline pass to Wingo, duplicating last week, Arch actually led him and he had to take a step forward to catch it.  I think Wingo was surprised.

I have to confess that I thought it was the usual Arch just a little off with his passes, this time the error being a "positive" one.  But no, Arch and the WR were more consistently "in rhythm" all game.

You were awfully quick to judge a great ball by Arch as a bad throw. I guess negative feedback caused you to come to your senses and post the above rationalization.

I just think Arch throws with more velocity than Quinn.  Noticeable difference

One is a senior and one is being forced to play significant time because of injuries.  I’d cut Filsaime some slack,

We should hide out next to Jester and beat him with a bat during the off-week! Do players still live in that wretched void of infernal wasteland? Ugh. I swear I got parvo living there.

He literally was.  Y’all can’t be this dense. That fucking blind.

And i was very vocal about how he played the 4th quarter last week AND against Vandy.  He made a huge improvement.

it isn’t hard to accept both things are true you idiot.

Yep I was vocal becuase I watched games. His throws. I know he was missing guys he shouldn’t have and he’s gotten better.  I’ve given him tons of the credit.

also I don’t know what idiots were saying it’s an elite OL. It’s been bad too.  It was part of the problem for the offense along with the Run game. Not just Arch. Not just Sark.  several factors.

this whole “gotcha” shit is for the birds.

Not as old as the "yeah but" shit.  Yeah but, he technically started last year.  Yeah but he's old enough to drink.  Yeah but these guys are higher rated than Golden, AD, Brooks and Worthy.  Kid deserved some leeway and you weren't willing to give it to him or give him credit for improving.  It turned personal for you and a few others.  Usual suspects on the few others, but was surprised from you as you're pretty levelheaded.

My point was saying Arch was playing poorly, mainly due to inaccuracy, throwing the ball late, not seeing he field DID happen.  And has been improved.

You can't pull the wool over our eyes and pretend he's the same, but just other things got fixed. No, HE improved his decision making and accuracy too.

Arch was missing throws I've never seen a quarterback at Texas miss other than Swoopes maybe. He would even tell you he was missing throws he had never missed before in his life. What he's doing now doesn't change any of that. He was playing terribly and if you couldn't see that then you have your head stuck up your ass

With how bad he was playing to start the year he should have been. Dude couldn’t hit wide open receivers. Two things can be true

When he was playing bad? Yeah?  A lot of people did, and it wouldn't have been horrible...since it didn't seem to be getting better at the time.

Even if just for a half to maybe shake some shit out.  He wasn't even good till the 4th quarter of Miss ST.    They way ya'll continue to pretend he wasn't playing well is baflling.

It was NOT stupid then, and revisionist history is a really great thing to have dickwad.

Just jump in to say "told you so". Fuck you.

No one said he was playing well, benching a QB that clearly needs reps is fucking stupid. Weird how you don't get that.

Oh and it's not revisionist history when I was calling you a fucking idiot at the time for wanting him benched, fucking idiot.

exactly...I wasn't saying send him to the fucking portal, replace him forever.  But he was obviously having issues until recently. and i'm fucking glad he seems to have gotten over them.  I was never "out on arch" thinking he didn't have. Just that he was playing bad and needed to sit for a bit.

It's revisionist history to act like you were right that all he needed was time. No he needed more than that...more help from Sark and the OL and him getting better.  He literally was STILL bad for the first 3 quarters last week.  You think a light switch flipped "because reps" between the 3rd and 4th quarters?

So yeah, keep that "I was right" shit and shove it.

You can say i was wrong now, which is, as I said, revisionist history. he was BAD.  everyone saw it.  he's better now. I'm glad he is.  I don't hate him. I thought he'd be a heisman favorite this year.  He wasn't.

You can admit he was bad, and he's better now, or you can continue to be a fucking moron trying to run laps about you being right.  Get off it man, this is pointless.
