I’d guess a launch monitor is most efficient but they’ll generally be 12-15 yards gap between each once you find one or two of them.

FWIW I’m about to turn 50 and PW is 105y now just as it was when I was 35

If you are near a range with Top Tracer technology, that’d be a decent option

Are there any in Austin?

Before living aboard for 13 of last 14 years, I lived on the 9th hole at Lago Vista. The 8th is a par 5, I would just go over there at dusk and hit 100 or so balls into the green - that was when I had it dialed in.

Another complication is they use meters in Singapore/Indonesia/Australia, so I’m always doing math for distances.

Just get a range finder. I can’t remember the last time I cared what the course told me the distance was. What’s surprising is how frequently gps and even yardage markings were just plain wrong

Also, for the record, even I could hit a PW 150 yards into #9 at Lago!

And putter

Range finder helps at the driving range figuring out your clubs.

Avery Ranch, Teravista, Falconhead, Plum Creek (Kyle) per their website. I can confirm Plum Creek

It’s actually kinda fun. Works via an app on your phone. Will store data as well so you can look at it when you get home, etc

You can also go to the PGA Superstore at the Arbor Walk or Golf Galaxy. They have good simulators there and indoor to boot. Just "demo" a club - they've never really cared and I think they're just happy to talk shop mostly.

Agreed on this - GPS is real hit or miss when you're playing a hilly course like many in Austin.

It’s definitely not good for range finding. My house was opposite of the house you drive it over.

I might owe you an apology or two.

Played Crown Colony in Lufkin this weekend.  Disappointed.

I was okay with the $181 green fee, however, the range balls were of the quality of a muni, the greens were ROCK hard, zero, and I mean zero signage on which direction to go to the next tee box, no hole signs at all, and the most maddening thing was no pin sheets.  Numerous times we had to drive all the way to the green to see what quadrant the pin was in.

This place used to be top 5 in the state and very difficult. The Bermuda Augusta. Temple-Inland used to pump money into it but that stopped years ago. Was a great stay and play trip too.

All correct.  It isnt a long course by any stretch from the back tees, but some tight tee shots and unforgiving if you miss approaches.  At one time they were #2 in the state.

Interesting review of the Driver from LA Golf. Supposedly it has an optimized budge and roll (gear effect) face for off center hits based on swing speeds. If you are familiar with Bryson's drivers and irons, then you know about budge and roll.

TLDW: It works. Spins from off center strikes were optimized for spin and distance. Maybe Bryson's not totally full of shit.

A family member gifted me a 2024 Callaway ORG14 golf bag that is new with tags but missing the removable ball pouch cover. I don’t know why it is missing. The local pro called Callaway to see about getting a replacement. No dice. Do any of you knowledgeable sports know a way to get it replaced?

Why in the world would someone design a bag with that?  Plus why wouldn't they let you buy a replacement

It's removable so that it can be personalized or embroidered. Checking other forums it appears that it is some sort of state secret that Callaway and Titleist are guarding with their lives.

Pasatiempo trip report!

Had to go to Santa Cruz for my daughter’s roller derby tourney. Had heard excellent things but the price was exorbitant. Lucky for me, right after the Western Intercollegiate they close the course for four days for maintenance. After that, they offer a significant discount for the next 13 days. I paid $220 to walk and rent a push cart, normally would be $425. The GM assured me it would be very playable and it was indeed! Was cart path only as the main difference, which I didn’t care about. Greens had a light top dressing but rolled plenty pure.

View from 1 tee with the bay in the background. Only a 440y par 4! Hit a decent drive but overdrew and had to punch under trees. Got down in 3 after that for a solid bogey.

3 tee. No prob just a par 3 playing 200+ uphill and into a breeze, surrounded by bunkers with flag tucked on a shelf in the very back. Hit driver and was just left and short of the left bunker. Hit a solid pitch that didn’t quite make the top shelf, came back down to 35 feet and sadly 3 putted.

8 tee with 9 and clubhouse in background. Good: made a sick up and down from the short left bunker. Bad: it was for double. Did have an easy par on 9, the only one of the day ooooof.

15 tee. Apparently McKenzie viewed this and 12 at Augusta as analogues. Came up in fried egg in short leftmost bunker. Hit an excellent out to 9 feet but missed.

View from facing and beside 16 green, one of the most amazing and severe I’ve ever played. Would love to just chip and putt around on this for days.

The rare closing par 3. Thinned my tee shot but jusssssst covered the bunker and released to the middle. Literally no idea how you stop it near the flag tho, had 12 feet back from front edge and couldn’t have done much better.

103, 7 fairways, 2 GIR, 38 putts. Currently have it as my #3 all time course. It was a SOB of a hilly walk, my app said I covered 32 flights. Had cramping on front of my leg just above my ankle that night. I can’t really justify $400+ anywhere but I’d drive a few hours just to play it again at $225 for sure.
