a slower fisher with a better batting eye is my take

As long as he doesn't turn out to be another AJ Reed

Good plate discipline and power.  Sucks that he doesn't have any skills outside of the batter's box besides his arm, but then again, it was a late 1st round pick.

Lots of potential for that spot though.  He was in the discussion for 1st overall at one point.

Agreed - I just hope he doesn’t start out flat.

Yeah, this is how I see it as well. Maybe he can play LF adequately, but even as a 1B/DH-only he could be an asset. If the plate discipline and power translate to pro ball, he figures to be a quick riser. For a late 1st, that's pretty good.

this was our 2nd rd pick...not quite as good of name as the first guy, but maybe he can brew up some excitement in the future:

Jumping on some helium, Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow, Assistant GM Mike Elias, and their team in the Astros War Room have selected 6’ - 2” tall, 205 pound right-handed pitcher Jayson Schroeder out of Juanita High School in Kirkland, Washington.

A very physical three-sport star from a cold weather climate, Schroeder was ranked in the top 100 prospects both by Baseball America (72nd overall ranking) and by MLB.com (98th overall ranking) and has consistently been sitting in the 92-93 mile per hour range on his fastball with good power and sink from a high 34 arm slot and projection for additional velocity as he ages. In addition to the fastball, he has good depth and a consistent shape with high spin rates on a curve and a developing slider. Baseball America considers his secondary offerings to be a bit fringe currently, though it is believed that his arm slot and feel for spin (surely an attractive quality from the spin-happy Astros’ perspective) will lend itself well to a power slider as he matures.

Whether he can start or will end up a high velocity reliever will depend largely on his ability to develop a third pitch. His stuff has absolutely dominated at his level in Washington, as he struck out 110 batters (against only 19 walks) in just 60.1 innings pitched with even fewer earned runs allowed (13) than his stingy walks total.

When it comes to signability, most players taken in this range are going to sign, and there’s no reason not to expect Schroeder to forego his commitment to Washington University in order to sign at or near his allotted slot bonus of $965.3 K to join the ranks of professional baseball players with the defending World Champions.

Everyone is slower than Fisher. Everyone has a better eye. So not sure what to think.

the game I saw he was lacing it to all sides.

Don't we have enough marginal DH types with White, Reed, Davis.

They will be gone 3 - 4 years from now.

I’m not sure what it means but the Astros have only drafted 1 high schooler in their 1st 10 picks so far.

24 games left this month. All of them against average to bad teams. Anything less than a 19-5 record will be a disappointment.

not trying to be a downer, but there's a really good chance we won't win 19 of our next 24...

Lulz. A disappointment if we don’t play .800 ball. That’s why this thread can be such a beating sometimes. Unrealistic expectations.

Yeah, but look at the competition we are facing: 2 against the Mariners, 4 against the Rangers, 3 against the A's, 3 against the Royals, 3 against the Rays, 3 more against the Royals, 3 against the Blue Jays, and 3 more against the Rays.

We have no business losing a series against any of these teams. Only the Mariners and A's are currently over .500.

and that is a classic example of how errors turn into runs.

lulz cabo wants to cut half the team
Nah, just Keuchel and Giles. Maybe Marisnick too come to think of it.

gonzales and fisher ?

Dallas has probably cost himself $30-40 million with his performance this season.

Jesus Christ, DK can go fuck himself

Move his sorry ass to the bullpen, right behind Tony sipp as our left-handed pitcher

The baseball gods have been awfully good to us the last several days. Time to give some back I guess.

The WCWS game is infinitely more entertaining than this snuff film

They have, we're in second with multiple blown leads over the past 10 days.

He was talking about the baseball gods being kind to the Longhorns.

Nevermind, read that wrong.

Another Jake by Marisnick.

If I could bet that he's going to strike out, I'd be a rich man

Jake should just go ahead and commit seppuku

At some point, there needs to be a serious talk with Jake, and serious decisions need to be made. The Red Sox did it with Ramirez.
