That was a nice little ass-whipping but this team isn't doing shit until they fix the turnovers. Starting with Vok.

Maybe a little jet-lag is to blame. Here's hoping.

Not sure how the fuck Weaver went 2/9 against a D2 team that we shot 66% from the field against.

This may be a long year. If we can scrap to .500 in the SEC and make the tourney I'll be impressed.

Man, Traore with another 14 rebounds last night in just 13 minutes.  The dude cleans the glass so well, but the rest of his game just isn't very good.  Dude is averaging 21.4 TRB/40 min, which is insane.

Traore and Codie have been the biggest negatives for me so far this season. Traore is basically Ze’Rik Onyema with a few more rebounds and Codie can’t protect the basketball, defend or score outside of dunks.

We know what we have with Vok and Swain.  Pope and Mark are consistently inconsistent.  They are not guards who can run an offense or handle a press/trap.  If Wilcher and Heide continue to gain minutes and confidence, and can provide consistent points, this team could be good enough to fight for a tournament spot.  We run the fast break fairly well and probably need to do that as much as we can to keep the pressure off Pope and Mark.   Mark did look better last night in the small forward/swing role with Wilcher and Weave on the court and Swain at PF.  He seemed more comfortable passing and driving out of that lineup.  The smaller line-up with this team is probably as big as our large lineup last year, so we can run that without getting punished if Traore and Vok defend and rebound ok.  We are basically as team with 2 guards, Wilcher and Pope.  Mark and Weav are basically small forwards, though Weav can defend 1-4.  Tonight's game should provide a good glimpse of what Miller thinks will be the most effective line-up(s) in SEC.

It was particularly disturbing against ASU .. at least to me .. that Vokawhatshisname, the tallest/strongest looking guy on the court, fiddled around with entry passes long enuf for his defender and help to get in his kitchen before attempting a shot.

Catch, shoot, go right back up to rebound if you miss.  Getting fouled while shooting isn’t the worst possible outcome …

i’ve been harping on this all year with Vok, every single time he touches the ball he brings it down below his waist for no reason. i’ve benched middle school kids for that. he drives me nuts.

i just do not like this team. nothing personal against any of the players, but this is a poorly constructed roster that’s full of holes that will not be filled by any amount of growth or familiarity. sec play will be brutal, and i honestly don’t even want to play in any postseason tourney that isn’t the big dance. i haven’t been this resigned this early since shaka’s 11-win team. this will be a lost year that is very tough to enjoy.

I honestly don't take much from games against D2 teams or the turds of D1. Tonight will be our third game against a team with a pulse. Hopefully it goes better than the first two. But our guard play is ass, and I've seen enough of mark to know you get shit play more often than you get competent play

I think what was most frustrating about the Miller hire is Oats. Alabama had a shit basketball program and somehow not only found him, but have kept him (so far). I just don’t buy the argument that Miller was the best Texas could expect given the state of the program. But maybe the administration really believes Miller can win big. We’ve got a ways to go before we find out.

Miller wasn't the best hire.  He was a comfortable hire, both as a coach and financially.

IMO Texas is quite overrated for a basketball job and most high level coaches won’t touch it.

You can sneak a lot of mediocrity into the beginning of the season because the fanbase is usually distracted by football

Ok, but do you believe Alabama was a better basketball job than Texas?

Ball-handling was disgusting, even against D2 Chaminade (I only watched the 1st Half). Glad we're playing mostly scrubs OOC.

Only 3 SEC jobs are historically attractive to top coaches - Kentucky, Florida, and Arkansas.

The rest of us have the same problem - football is king by a long shot. Amazing what UF has done over the years.

no high level coach is scared of any job, and definitely not this one. UK, Duke, Indiana? sure. there’s a ton of pressure to perform there, right away. not at Texas. budget, city, recruiting ground, expectations, athletic department, the brand, the salary- this is a top 5-10 job in america and has been for a long time. the shaka smart hiring/extension and the chris beard fiasco have made people forget that, but it’s still true. no other job even comes close to having this many perks with such low expectations. it’s a dream job for most coaches.

I would agree with that 100%. Hence my question to Aces. Just because the Texas job was according to him, “over-rated”, which might be true, he missed the whole point of my post, which was that another school that has the same challenges as Texas (Alabama), still managed to hire what appears to be so far an outstanding coach.

If Miller succeeds, then this message board fodder will have been pointless, but many, myself included, are all speculating about the quality of Miller.

hell, chris beard was maybe the biggest name in coaching, was at an in-state rival, had just signed a long term extension that made him the 4th highest paid coach in america, with a huge buyout, and we got him no problem. yes, he’s an alum, i’ll give you that. that doesn’t change how appealing this job is. rick barnes turned down kentucky to stay here 15 years ago. this has been a destination gig for a long time now.

you don’t have to qualify it like that, oats is easily a top 5 coach in america.

it’s maddeningly simple too: when asked about his offensive philosophy oats said, “the three best shots in basketball are a catch and shoot three, a dunk, and a free throw; so that’s what we take.” as painfully obvious as that sounds, it doesn’t occur to most coaches to play this way and recruit to this style. it certainly never occurred to shaka or RT to implement “take good shots” as part of their philosophies or game plans.

Yeah, but you can't blame Oats for wanting to stay with a program that he's built at a place he's revered.

CDC wasn't gonna break the bank for him. Miller's credentials are better, on paper, than Oats. He came from Buffalo for crissakes. Sometimes, teams get lucky.

Yes, of course, Oats > Miller now. I thought it was implied that I meant at the time Bama hired him.

I should've been more specific.

There are a lot of great coaches who didn’t have good first years at their new schools, even in the portal era.

I see some big picture signs that give me hope (recruiting, an actual system being implemented), even if the wins don’t come in bunches this year.

Crazy thing to do after 7 games of a tenure but I’ll give him some time to untangle this thing. There weren’t exactly a lot of great things going for the program when he took over.

McCasland was 23-11 and lost in the first round in his first season at Tech. Like you said, he gets a year to get things in place
