Fuck fuck, fuck

CJGJ out for the whole year is still better than Kenyon Green on the roster. I think it’s a one-year deal though - fucking bummer.

Training Camp Recap Day 13 (Thursday’s practice). Last day in West Virginia, tomorrow is the first preseason game.

The Houston Texans had a padded scrimmage for their final practice from West Virginia on Thursday.

Here are observations from the practice, along with notable play-by-play moments.

  1. C.J. Gardner-Johnson got injured. He appeared to have a leg injury. He was carted off from the field. M.J. Stewart filled in for him. Multiple NFL reporters denied an initial report of a torn ACL. It seems like Gardner-Johnson got a little lucky.

  2. The safety room became quite thin.Jimmie Ward is still recovering from an injury and has a legal situation that needs to be resolved. Rookie safety Jayden Reed has missed multiple practices with an injury. Veteran Russ Yeast has made some plays in training camp. He stepped in front of a wide receiver to intercept a Davis Mills pass.

  3. C.J. Stroud looked good with a couple of hiccups. Stroud handled pressure well. He stood in the pocket and delivered multiple times with defenders headed toward him. He had a decisive run to avoid a coverage sack in the red zone. Stroud found Xavier Hutchinson and Nico Collins for touchdowns in the end zone.

  4. Stroud had two huge misses early. He tried to go deep to Nico Collins down the right side, but the pass caused Collins to readjust. Collins dropped it after he got turned around. He was wide open. It was a negative play for both of the trustworthy offensive elements. The next pass Stroud sailed it too far in front of Schultz. There was another pass later that was behind a receiver. It was crisper than most of his practices, but he had missed throws he could surely make.

  5. The offensive line had a decent day overall. There were some good pass protection moments. C.J. Stroud handled pressure well. He made throws with pressure coming down on him. The defensive line got home a few times. Will Anderson dominated Aireontae Ersery for an easy sack. Jalen Pitre blitzed and got home. Henry To’oTo’o sacked Stroud on a blitz. There were some coverage sacks where nobody got open. Overall a solid day for the offensive line. DeMeco Ryans said he saw the line improve while in West Virginia.

  6. The offensive linemen protecting Stroud rotated at guard. Ersery was at left tackle, Jake Andrews was at center, and Tytus Howard was at right tackle for the first team. Laken Tomlinson started at left guard and Juice Scruggs started at right guard. Later, Scruggs played left guard and Ed Ingram played right guard. The situation with the offensive line still appears to be fluid.

  7. The rushing attack had some success.Nick Chubb and Dameon Pierce didn’t participate. Dare Ogunbowale got a tough couple of yards on a short rush. Woody Marks bounced a few plays for positive yardage. British Brooks converted a short-yardage attempt. There were some successful defensive stuffs at the line of scrimmage. Tommy Togiai got the defense excited on a stuff.

  8. The first drive by the first team was solid. Nico Collins caught a quick slant. Jalen Pitre got home for a sack. Stroud found Christian Kirk to move the chains for a first down. A play-action pass to Dare Ogunbowale was a quick one over the middle. Pitre flew in for a tackle for a loss when Xavier Hutchinson couldn’t block him. Hutchinson caught a pass over the middle on the next play for a big gain. Henry To’oTo’o fell trying to defend Hutchinson. Tommy Togiai stuffed a run for no gain. Woody Marks had a good cutback to the right. Stroud couldn’t complete the pass to Dalton Schultz on third down with Kamari Lassiter in coverage. Ka’imi Fairbairn made the field goal.

  9. Davis Mills got his first drive next. Zach Thomas was at left tackle, Jaylon Thomas was at left guard, Jarrett Patterson was at center, Ed Ingram was at right guard, and Blake Fisher was at right tackle. A quick Mills pass to Brevin Jordan was sniffed out by linebacker Nick Niemann for a small gain. A well-protected play-action pass couldn’t connect to Justin Watson. Myles Bryant flew in to break up the next pass intended for Cade Stover. The drive finished up when Mills was too long for Jaylin Noel. The field goal was good.

  10. The next Stroud drive started with a pass to John Metchie for a first down. This was the play where C.J. Gardner-Johnson got hurt. Tim Settle put some pressure on the quarterback, beating Juice Scruggs, but Stroud got rid of the ball. Azeez Al-Shaair plugged a hole to stuff Marks for no gain. Stover made a slick catch, ripping the ball out of the air to his left with Pitre in coverage on him. Third down was a coverage sack. Tommy Townsend had a beautiful punt deep into the corner that was downed by Tremon Smith.

  11. Stroud and the first team stayed on the field. The offense ran the ball for a short gain, buried deep in their territory. Al-Shaair stopped the run. Collins and Lassiter locked up for one of their many battles. This one was a Collins win on the sideline. Stroud made a poor throw trying to get the ball to Collins after he left Jalen Pitre in the dust. Townsend punted to end that drive.

  12. The best drive of the day was next.Juice Scruggs played center for Davis Mills. Jarrett Patterson played left guard. That was an alignment rarely seen in training camp to this point. The only play of the drive was a perfectly executed play-action pass. Mills sold it, rolled out, and hit a crossing Xavier Hutchinson. Hutchinson turned the corner and headed for the end zone for a score. It was an excellent play that the second-team offense executed perfectly. Mills and the offense wouldn’t fare so well on the next one. They failed to get a first down thanks to Myles Bryant. The slot cornerback batted away a screen pass that looked well blocked. After the coaches awarded a first down, Blake Fisher allowed a sack, and Mills threw an interception to Russ Yeast.

  13. Stroud’s misses to Collins and Schultz started the next drive. Kamari Lassiter was all over Cade Stover for a pass breakup. A short gain for Woody Marks on the ground was next. Stroud was too far in front of Collins with Lassiter in coverage, but he had a lot of heat from his right side. Stroud and Christian Kirk couldn’t connect in the back of the end zone. This drive ended with a coverage sack or throwaway, depending on how generous you wanted to be. The scrimmage reached halftime.

  14. Stroud had one of his best throws of the day out of halftime. He had tons of heat headed his way, and he stood and delivered to a crossing Brevin Jordan. He would have taken a hit in a live rep. Fullback Jakob Johnson threw an excellent block to open up a small run for Dare Ogunbowale. Stroud delivered again with heat headed his way to Justin Watson, who slid to catch the pass. A short rush for Marks was stopped by Lassiter. To’oTo’o got home on a blitz for a sack. Stroud scrambled for a first down. It was a legit scramble, too, not a continuation of what would have been a sack. Good coverage forced Stroud to throw high to Schultz. Stroud finished the drive on a play-action pass to Xavier Hutchinson for a touchdown.

Additional Observations

  • Christian Kirk beat Derek Stingley Jr. on the sideline for a nice catch that earned a first down.

  • Dare Ogunbowale jumped over a downed lineman to turn a short loss into a short gain.

  • Jaylin Noel caught a touchdown that was batted into the air. It landed right in his arms.

  • Cade Stover caught a touchdown in the red zone from Davis Mills.

  • The final four plays of practice were the first team in the red zone. Collins caught a touchdown defended by Lassiter. Schultz couldn’t catch with a one-handed leap. Collins had a pass intended for him broken up by Lassiter. Collins dispatched Lassiter for a score in the front of the end zone.

  • Tackle Cam Robinson watched practice. He hasn’t participated since he was injured on Monday.

  • Linebacker Christian Harris watched practice.

  • DeMeco Ryans said running back Nick Chubb is “fine” and would be back in a few days.

  • Ryans said some starters would play against the Minnesota Vikings, but every player has their ramp-up plan.

Jimmie Ward arrested again tonight in Montgomery County!! CUT THIS LOSER NOW!

So he didn’t show up for court on the domestic violence thing? This guy is a world class shit heel. I don’t want him anywhere near Houston, but dozens of NFLers have made similar charges go away by following competent legal advice.

He was popped for testing positive for alcohol which he didn’t know was prohibited. It wasn’t a new domestic violence charge.

We can’t catch a break as a sports town. Hold on conflicting reports now

You do realize that not tearing any of the connective structures is a good thing and might be considered by some to be catching a break.

Now let's wait two weeks for the x-rays to get back to determine if there is a break.

Of course I realize that. My “can’t catch a break” comment was in response to Aaron Wilson’s erroneous report that CJGJ tore his ACL. I then posted the correct report from Rap and my posts were merged because they were within a couple minutes of each other.
