Keeps everyone distracted from the fact that we spends 2x on military spending compared to China and Russia combined.

The answer to why can't we have nice publically funded things focussed on art and science is very straightforward. Quoting the founders as deflection is pretty low key stupid.

Last time you alluded to knowing me IRL, you said I was harmless. You are all over the place. Try to get your story straight dumbass.

Sadly… more and more people who identify as libertarian in reality and in practice just means they have a high tolerance of authoritarianism to me.

I went to school with Ron Paul’s kids.  One of them was a trainer/equipment manager back in the day.  Don’t bring up the Texas/Miami Cotton Bowl around him.  He still gets seizures from that experience.

Ron Paul used to jog by my house.   I definitely know what’s a Libertarian and what’s not.

Oh, and Rand was Randy back in the day.  Nobody called him Rand or even considered calling him that.

Libertarians are the dumbest of the dumb people. It literally only takes five minutes of thought to realize that the government plays a critical role in the survival of a society.

I took classes at UT from a Nobel Prize winning economist. He put it perfectly. When I asked why government had to play a role, he correctly pointed out that without government, human suffering would be unimaginable and unbearable.

I don’t think anyone actually wants anarchy. But the trajectory of this uniparty system is certainly going to arrive us there. Probably under mushroom clouds.

Cool. Then pay for it. It's a free country, you can stop freeloading off other people. There is no reason to steal from the poor to fund your entertainment.

Agree with this generally.  But we don’t have to steal from poor people. Just the absolute lunatics that want to jerk off to f35s bombing people lined up in food lines resulting from conflicts that we created as a result of our dysfunctional foreign policy.

Freeloading?

Here’s the meta view of freeloading:

A media outlet (that provides media soup to nuts from kids programming to drama and documentaries) that isn't captured by the private sector and/or propaganda machines is a public good just as highways are a public good.

You're smarter than to not recognize that government funded media, esp including PBS, is a propaganda machine.

Whose propaganda?  And which shows are propaganda?

Funny, it's accused of being a liberal propaganda machine despite the fact that we've had an awful lot of conservative administrations over its existence.

Could it be that, like education, media produced by intelligent people tends a bit liberal?

There's really only one party putting out propaganda right now.

I listen to NPR a LOT and, although many of the reporters/commentators very subtly cock an eyebrow at a lot of Trump's shit, there's very little propaganda.

Let's go straight balls to the wall democracy. We are not in the 19th fn century. We don't need to ship representatives from fucking Billings Montana to Washington to vote in the stead of the people. We can effect the people's voice in real time. It's funny we can't figure this stuff out.

It’s been around since 1967.

32ish years under republicans. Only it’s a problem now that a huge man baby is in charge again and needs money for a deportation force and tax cuts for billionaires

The money doesn't exist. It's being printed. You could cut literally any spending and I would be in favor of it. But spending $500 million for upper middle class entertainment is particulary egregious. We are going to have to learn to live without luxuries. And by luxuries, I mean Social Security and most forms of discretionary spending.

It's a mild inconvenience for you if eggs go up to $6. It's existential if you make $15 per hour.

No we are not. Until it all crashes suddenly. Once the petrodollar backstop breaks, then we get the carrier group backstop. In a world with MAD. But yeah, I give a fuck about Big Bird at this point for my kids.

In what world is Big Bird not commercially viable?

You’re a moron. Like really fucking stupid. The entire federal outlay for all public media at every level was projected at 535 million for this year. That is out of a budget of 7 trillion. That’s not even a fraction of a penny out of every thousand dollars the government spends. Please tell me you are sterilized.

Borderline Libertarian here.  I figure that 60ish years of public money is enough to figure out if there is a real market demand for that they are doing.

It’s good for kids. Studies have shown that. What the fuck is your problem with it.

Not sure what that market looks like at the moment.  My boys mostly watching fishing videos on youtube these days and my daughter won't pull her head out of a college test prep book.

Well we had about 25 years of commercial radio and TV without educational programming for kids. Until PBS came along. So yeah maybe that ol private sector doesn't quite meet all the needs.

This is all looking backwards twice. Media has moved on. Zero kids listen to radio or OTA TV. Come on man.

What will happen with the PBS Masterpiece Streaming app? It is one of the three streaming services I pay for along with Acorn TV and Britbox. Just an absolute wealth of shows on the PBS streaming for people of all ages. I’d hate to see it go as well because TFG and his bald-headed clown of a propagandist just want it gone.

According to PBS, they receive less than 2% of their funding from the government. So perhaps the price will go up slightly.

I mean that’s okay if the price goes up. It’s quality TV and honestly I thoroughly enjoy watching shows on there. I know this is middle-aged man yelling at clouds, but PBS content is easily the most educational and useful of any streaming service. Kids and adults can learn a ton about the world around them watching it.
